Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

I was sitting in my moms basement surfing around and saw a link to this thread at AR15.com and since none of my friends would come over for a circle jerk I thought I would add my MOD 0 to the mix.

Still have a ways to go but the hard(not necessarily expensive) parts are there. Ops 12th, Leupold 3.5-10x, and maybe an a1 lower are still on the list

Is that an HDR photomerged product off of Photoshop CS5? You can take several photos adjusting the shutter speed from a negative 2 exposure and work up to a +2 exposure setting and then combine all the photos into a high resolution photo, and the stylize it. A great gun though! I will have to put my gun up here as soon as I get home into an HDR shot to give you an idea.

Thanks!

Ive wanted a mod 0 since I got into ARs a little over a year ago. I was planing to piece one together myself and even had some parts when I was lucky enough to find this upper for sale. I'm almost certain it's fom the same batch as Norsman1950's upper. I have to order some stuff from PRI next week and I'll see if they can shed some light on it then.

I hope to get the 12th model ordered in the next few weeks, then start saving for a LR/T.

It could be HRD, but to me it looks like he cranked the contrast, boosted the saturation and adjusted the brightness to make it useable.

HDR will allow you to just add a little something extra to making your photo look like it came out of a fantasy land.

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

This has been a great thread, I especially enjoyed seeing the "Mil-return" Mod 0 uppers.

Does PRI actually offer these "Mil-return" uppers for sale from time to time? Just curious to know how these commercially surface.

Thanks

Here are mine, both assembled by me. Both shoot moa or better with SW ammp 77 gr run and gun. Top is traditional Mod1 lower one is my rendition. I ordered the correct scope for the top gun just waiting. Next is the can. Top has the douglas barrel the lower is a krieger barrel (better) both have Giesselle triggers. They are fun bullet hosers.

I know it's a Mod 1. But glad to finally have a scope back on the rifle again after 2 years. Currently looking for the sights and might be changing to the correct rail this summber.

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

Just to set the record straight, No MK12’s Mod 0 or Mod 1 were ever issued with a SOPMOD stock.
Any pictures of military rifles with them were unauthorized modifications. The MK12’s were tested with the carbine buffer tube, buffer, and spring and this caused more malfunctions than were allowed. I know I will hear from people who will say theirs work with no problems. I am just telling it the way it was.

Any thoughts on the suitability of the Vltor A5 on the MK12 Alan? I heard it was designed for the Marines to enable use of adjustable stocks on full length rifles, that leads me to think that it would probably work well on the MK12.

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

Does anyone have any comments on the differences between the BCM mod 0 upper compared to the mod 0 upper PRI is making and selling currently? Is the BCM worth the extra couple hundred to be equipped the same as the PRI? Also, who makes the barrels that each are making? Looking into one of these, and would like to know what my best choice for the buck would be.

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

Well, I have been waiting to post to show my new creation but I have been waiting for parts. I started my MOD 0 build about three months ago and I have the lower completly built but I am still waiting on the barrel from Compass Lake. They have been waiting to get some blanks in from Douglas and should be able to start on it this week. Hopefulle I will have something so show soon

Yeah, the barrels. I have a LW barrel from PRI for my Mod 0 build (group by on here earlier this year), but they also sell Douglas barrels (don't know if it's one from Gene Barnett). Mine was Cerakoted black. I don't know who makes BCM's barrels.

Also, from what I've read, BCM still has the correct ARMS #38 PEQ-2-3 rail (and is the only way you can still get the correct rail without buying second-hand), whereas the PRI probably uses their clone PEQ rail. I have the PRI clone, and the biggest difference is the lack of markings and the rear mounting screws/plate are reversed left-right from the ARMS.

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

i really dont quite understand all the need for what one thinks is "correct" in the barrel. Hell pick any barrel thats at least 18 inches that you know will shoot good, collars are easy enough to get made

example 1- this is a white oak 1-7 SPR contour barrel

mod-0-3.jpg

example 2- this was a 20 inch rock river 1-8 heavy service rifle match barrel, had it cut to 18 inch and had a collar made for it, it utilizes the gas block step inside the collar

085.jpg

example 3- this one (one on the left) is a 18 inch armalite heavy 1-8, had a collar made for it too

mod-o.jpg

point is, a mod-0 can be made with just about any barrel that shoots good, the factor to consider is the collar, the barrel has to have some sort of step on it for the collar to but up against, but most barrels already have a step on em with that .750 area for the gasblock, that can be used. On the armalite barrel thats how it was done, we cut a collar that was a straight inside channel and buts up against that gas block step

VJJPunisher,

On a slight tangent, is there a spec for where that step should be (from the muzzle or the shoulder of the front threads)? I have seen it stated as at least 2.75" from the muzzle but I don't I don't have a 12th Model yet so I don't know how precisely you have to locate that step.

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

there is a spec, but the step on the barrel is NOT whats important, whats important is the location of the 20 degree taper on the collar.

the original military requirement for thread contact was only 3 rotations on the can, this seemed weak to me since theres so much more threads on the brake and in the can so i called ron allen at ops inc, they recommend 6-8 rotations of contact, stating "theyre there, why not use them" and any more than 8 and you might run into threads being exposed inside the can which can be a bitch once it starts fouling.

anywho, on the three guns i have we determined a 2.500 inch length puts it right in there at 6-8, 2.5 being from the front side of the threads on the brake to the START of the 20 degree taper

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

I shouldn't have clicked on this thread! lol

I'm going with a slightly altered version... Ordered a PRI Gen III DELTA forearm, and Delta Rifle length SPR-PEQ Top Rail.

Next week I'm ordering the Mega Billet upper/lower combo.

I should have a complete rifle around... christmas! haha

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

Yeah, I havent seen a Mod-0'ish build with a Delta forearm yet.

I'm sure there will be others with completed builds before mine... But I'm going to name it right now:

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

Here's my entry into the SPR pool. LWRC M6-SPR, rebarreled with an 18" standard profile non fluted barrel, stock replaced with an old A2 I had laying around (until the Magpul MOE Fixed stock releases,) Sniper Gray cerakote.

Here I figured fellow firearm owners and SPR enthusiasts would appreciate my SPR configured rifle even if it looked a little different than 6 pages of the same old thing. My fault for thinking we were all on the same team.

Re: MK12 MOD-0 LETS SEE EM!

I've always wanted a Mod 0 clone. Built from parts acquired during two separate group buys here earlier this year (one for the PRI rail, PEQ rail, front sight/gas block, rear sight, and Ops Inc. brake & collar, another for the barrel)

The lower is a Nodak Spud A1-style lower, with a real A1 stock, correctly colored takedown pins, mag release, and selector, Ergogrip, and X-Treme shooting AR-15 trigger. I snagged the Eagle TAS-1UM sling from CTD back when they had them, and the bipod is an Atlas (that sadly has to be shared among several guns).

The upper has the following deviations from spec:
<ul style="list-style-type: disc">[*]Upper is not gen-u-wine Colt[*]PRI Gen III handguard is naked carbon instead of painted black[*]PRI barrel made from a Lothar Walther blank, Cerakoted black[*]The rear BUIS is a A.R.M.S. #40L instead of the regular #40[*]Bolt carrier is stainless Young N/M I had laying around, MP bolt[*]PRI PEQ rail instead of A.R.M.S. PEQ-2-3 top rail[/list]
The scope is a Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40 that I also bought through a group buy here. I couldn't see spending $1k on a "spec" Leupold when there are other scopes I like better for that money, and I got a really good deal on the VX-R.

So far IMO the scope is hit and miss. I like that it is compact , has great glass, has a very cool illumination system, is mil/mil, and that I got it for a great price. I don't like that the reticle is way too thick and obscures the center of the target (my biggest beef, really –– can't see a 1" dot at 100yd), and the knobs are kinda mushy (not much better than the BSA 4-14x44 I have on a Savage MkII to be honest). I also don't like the garish "Leupold" on the sides of the ocular, or the golden medallion on the illumination knob.

When finances permit, I'll probably move the scope over to my 6.8SPC AR, as it would be an excellent hunting scope, and replace it with another scope, like the new Weaver Tactical 2-10x36 FFP or the IOR 2.5-10x42 FFP (already have one and I love it).

Right now I'm shooting Berger 70gr VLD's driven by AR-Comp powder, Winchester brass, and Wolf SRM primers. Holds a little over 1/2 moa at 100 and the MV is 2850fps.
