Re: Montana P-dog ....Dog

I had a German Shepard when I was young that was a killer ground hog killer.

The dog would low crawl to get between the GH and the hole and it was a race to the hole! She seemed to always win.

Re: Montana P-dog ....Dog

The Karelian Bear Dog is a Finnish or Karelian breed of dog. In its home country it is regarded as a national treasure. In Finland they are more often used for hunting moose and elk although they will hunt any kind of animal. Bear and moose tests are conducted in Finland, Sweden and Norway to determine an individual's ability as a beardog and weighs heavily in the dogs breeding potential. This dog will put a bear to flight or attack it with great pugnacity and will sacrifice its own life for its master. Its quick reflexes and fearless nature have also made it very popular for hunting other aggressive game such as the wild boar. It was the breed's ability to hunt and offer protection against a bear that earned the breed its name.

Yeah, Prarie Dogs have been known to carry this fun little disease called bubonic plague which is transfered through fleas. You may remember this from history class. In Europe they called it the Black Death and had some very significant effects on the population (an subsequent reduction of population) in Europe c.1350 all the way up to the mid 1600's.

Re: Montana P-dog ....Dog

We need more dogs like your little friend here. Prairie Dogs and ground squirrels are taking over the West on a scale that makes illegal immigration look slow paced in comparison, and in some cases you can't even shoot them given local ordinances. At Vandenberg AFB you can't even walk around without tripping on one of their holes and spraining an ankle, at least when I was there last.

Sorry I caught this so late. Actually more importantly, monkeypox is endemic in some prairie dogs (includes Arizona!) - so please don't let that beautiful dog eat those innards & please contact your vet about this...
