I once knew a guy licensed by the state to rehabilitate hurt birds. He had owls and eagles and hawks and such, most of which were destined for zoos because they would never make again in the wild. Others he would have to train or at least encourage to fly again and even get their hunting instincts back before releasing them back to fend for themselves but that was actually quite rare. Birds are real fragile. Real interesting to go and hang out and help out.
BUT...he had a couple of purchased falcons and a couple of hawks that were trained to hunt birds. He'd hunt mainly pheasant and quail but also ducks. And he had a German Shorthair that hunted with the birds. He had the dog trained to point (damned near instinct in a good one) and to flush on command. The dog would go on point and the raptor would be paying attention. When all was right, he'd have the dog flush and the raptor would knock it out of the air. If the raptor held the bird on the ground, often so, the dog would just wait until the raptor had enough and then fetch the quarry. When the dog fetched, the hunting bird would come in for a landing and get a treat of meat (not from the fresh kill). The bird would hang out for a while and either he'd launch it or it would basically tell him it wanted to fly and off it would go for more hunting. Pretty cool to watch and be a part of. The dog would watch the bird and the bird would often sort of guide the dog to where it knew there were pheasant. He was probably the most skilled animal trainer I have ever met.
