Long ago civilian instructor here. We'd tell new jumpers if they got hung up in a tree pop the reserve, shimmy down the lines and canopy to the ground and wait. We would find you, help get the chute out of the tree and head back to the DZ. After one such incident we revised our training to emphasize they needed to be certain they shimmied down the outside of the reserve canopy.
