Muzzle Brake on 300 WinMag

[MAG00]

I currently have a Rem 700 in 300 winmag being built. It will be in a Manners T5A stock with a #6 Douglas Barrel. I am trying to decide on a muzzle brake for it and have done some reading and searches on the forum.

I was wondering ya'lls opinion on the following brakes as far as effeciency particulary on a 300 win mag.

My gunsmith said he likes the Vais but I kind of like the looks of these better. However, if they are not as effecient as the Vais, then I will go with his recommendation.

The Vais brakes are excellent, EXCEPT for shooting prone because the 360 degree porting kicks up dust/dirt/debris like nobody's business! If it is going to be a bench gun or not shot from the prone position, then the Vais is a fine option (especially since you can get the Vais in various sizes that can be closely matched then machined for a pretty seamless install on your particular barrel contour).

The FTE brake (as well as the thruster brake) is also excellent in every respect and its porting helps to reduce downward blast unlike the Vais.

I can't speak to the effectiveness, first-hand anyway, of the RWS brake, but it is my understanding that they are excellent.

Take a look at the RAD brake. No special contour needed. Can select different diameters. Can easily remove for hunting or adding suppressor. Smith can time it to be flush with shoulder. 10* up and 10* back ports don't really stir up any dust. Fairly light compared to the FTE too.

Fwiw, if you are looking at badger, i prefer the thruster. Its effective on my old 300 wm and i lprefer its balance and contour over the fte.

Vais functions nicely on my hunting rifle, Rad is nice and take a look at apa's bastard line

If I could I'd recommend looking at the Holland Radial Baffle. Experienced one on a Rem 700 Sendero and I was able to watch holes punch paper at 100 yards easy.

I am having my 300WM built as we speak now, and I was in the same prediciment, and I went with the Bagder Thruster. It doesnt reduce recoil like say the holland or other big boys, but it also doesnt have the percussion/noise level increase either. I have that on other rifles and it works fine for me so I decided to stick with the thruster.

Look at the brakes offered by American Precision Arms. They come in all shapes and sizes. They are superior to all other brakes on the market.

Is it practical to not have a brake on a .300? Thinking of building one in .300 and slapping on a .300 thread-on can.

Neither of these are "low profile" but both are highly effective:

JP Benny Cooley

SJC Titan

Both will need a peel or crush washer, or a machinist to time it.

My .300Win sports a clone of the brake on the Rem 40-XS in .338 Lapua:

Much lower profile than the other two. Loud as Hell for anybody other than the shooter, but it recoils on par with my heavy barreled .243Win now.

There's a lot of good brakes out there. I have a Badger thruster on my 7 WSM and a Vais on my 300WM hunting rig. The thruster is way more effective, but the Vais does a good job. If I were in the market, I'd go with either the thruster or one of the APA line.

I have a Vais on my 7mM Mag, it is a fine but does through up dust. Gunsmiths like them because there is not much timing to be done since they are radial.

The last brake I bought was from the poster here RWS I beleive is his handle(a different from the comapany I beleive). I cannot say enough about his professionalism and price. Awesome break.

They all work though.

Same Vais on mine, works great at taming recoil but i would get one with closed bottom

The APA brakes are nice, and they look good to boot.

However, I feel they've grown a little big for their britches. $125 for a little bastard? I'll pass. I think the old $75 price point was about right...at least for me.

It's all a matter of personal preference.. You have the opinion of 19 others already, what do you like? They all work.. Just a matter of the design that catches your eye.

MAG00, you live in Texas, screw the brake, get a suppressor. And for these reasons:

1. If you ever forget hearing protection with a braked 300WM, you will lose some hearing, at least for awhile, possibly for life.

2. People shooting around you will hate you for the brake. It sucks behind the gun, it sucks worse beside the gun.

3. Shooting suppressed eliminates both problems, and reduces recoil at least as much as a brake - if not more (depending on can design.)

4. You can hunt with a brake in Texas now, you can shoot almost anywhere at almost anything with a can (within legal limits, of course.)

I shot brakes for a few years, hated the negatives, switched everything to suppressed, infinitely better solution to the problem.

As your build is ongoing, get a can working now, and in 6 months you will have the best recoil reduction and sound suppression option available at the moment.


All that said, I like the FTE more than VIAS, owned both. I like a suppressor infinitely better than both.

I looked into these and, if I am understanding what I am seeing, this option is just too expensive at this time. It may be an option later on down the road though. Thanks for your input.

I was hesitant to have my $4500 GAP built as a .300WM because everyone on here told me it would be punishing to shoot. Especially since I was trying to make it lighter than a typical Crusader. GAP recommended and installed the FTE and it is amazing. Less recoil than my son's .243. I have even started leaving my 22-250 at home when I go varmint and coyote hunting since the .300WM is just so much dang fun to shoot.

I have Chris Costas 300win mag. Same rifle used in the Art of Precision DVD. Since chris runs a Surefire 338 suppressor, the rifle has the Surefire 338 brake on it. It has a 20" Kriger barrel and the thing has about the same recoil as my 24" GAP 308 with FTE brake on. I was very impressed on how well this brake tames down the recoil on this short 300. It is a 3 port design vs 2 port on the non-338 SF brakes

I've been looking in to the Muscle Brake you linked to. you don't happen to know the overall size/dimensions of it do you? How does it compare with the APA's and FTE's in felt recoil or barrel movement?
