I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm a sucker for wood and metal. I'm a big fan of the original M40 "look". I'm also a fan of 30-06 as I think it's an underrated chambering with a lot of potential. Sure, it's not the most effecient but with handloads you can really make it scream with a large variety of bullets. I wanted to put together a hunting rifle with these characteristics but wasn't going to spend thousands to do it. When I ran across a deal on an action I knew it was time to start this build.

Savage 110 30-06 - $349 new from Gander Mt
Obermeyer 26" AMU 1/11.25 blank - $280
EGW 20 MOA base - $32
Accutrigger polished and adjusted to just over 2 lbs
Barrel channel opened up for the larger barrel
Bedded with pillars and JB Weld - $9
Tactical Works bold handle - $46
MILSCO 1917 repro sling - $15 gun show buy
Rings and SS glass are from another rifle for now, I'm trying to decide what glass to go with.

Sierra 170gr FN Pro Hunter @ 2.96
Fed 210
RP case
47.5gr IMR-4895
.29 MOA

Hornady 220gr Interlock @ 3.230
Fed 210
RP case
41gr IMR-4895
.4 MOA

Not bad for $731 (not including glass, rings and barrel machining done by a family friend). I'm going to try some 178gr and 208gr A-Maxs for some paper/steel shooting. I think it'll do pretty good.

A family friend who works very closely with Boots in SE Wisconsin did the barrel machining. I called him just after buying the gun and asked him if he had the barrel I wanted, he did, and 48 hours later it was on the gun. I just paid for the blank. You're right, that is a little misleading. I edited the first post to add that.

ETA: I was in WI when I bought the gun.

I would be so afraid of scratching the wood, I probably wouldn't bring it outside.

.29 MOA center to center eh? Goes to show you don't need to spend $2k or even $6k to get that kind of accuracy.

I was happy when I got the first scratch on the stock because it means I don't have to baby it anymore. I expect this rifle to get pretty beat up, that's what it's for.

Those groups were during load development, I verified them as good loads with 2 more 5 shot groups of that load and all were right there. I think it will work!

Re: My "All American Rifle"

Nice rifle, at an excellent price! Post some target pics and some long range reports, when you get a chance.

Never discount a Savage.. I am guilty of that for the last few years, based solely on "looks", what an Idiot.. I have seen the light and started my first savage project..

Re: My "All American Rifle"

The Savages are often overlooked many in the "tactical" crowd. They often have no idea what they are missing. While I have a few high end guns, I have some Savages with factory barrels that will flat shoot.

Your 06 looks like it is G2G.
