Need Help Pricing Equipment

As mentioned in another thread, I am interested in getting into reloading. I know nothing about it, other than the basics of fix the brass, insert primer, fill with powder, and insert bullet. The mechanics, playing with loads, and testing are what I don't know and what appeal to me.

The father of a good friend of mine recently passed, and I am looking to buy all of his equipment off of him. Even though I know I won't use all of his dies, I want to make it easy on my friend by taking the whole lot. Pricing between friends is difficult of course, and he is as clueless as I am. What I am looking for here is a fair price.

Cost vs worth.
If you added it all up it would cost over a grand. I would maybe pay 500 for the press and trimmer and then all the other crap that no one will want.

There's a lot of equipment and powder that could be totally useless. Are you reloading rifle or pistol? The press is antique.

I will be reloading both pistol and rifle. When you say that the press is antique, do you mean obsolete? I know nothing and figured that it was a name brand and would be as good a place as any to start.

I would pay very little for any of that because honestly your not gonna use it long if you do decide to actually get into reloading.

If you're not needing to get set up for higher volume reloading this equipment would be a good start. The case trimmer and case holders work real well but take a while to get the cases trimmed.

I'd offer around $500 and you would be getting a deal and your friend wouldn't have to sell the pieces.

I helped the wife of a close friend of mine sell off most of his gun stuff. In general I looked up the item cost new and applied a discount depending on condition. If it was like new it got discounted 25%. Powder and primers we sold close to retail.

Thanks for all of your input. I think I agree with @ShtrRdy that as long as it is functional, it is all I need for now. In the event I ever want to start pumping some volume out then I can rethink things.

The press is solid. Sure it's a antique, but I have a older version that still works as good as a new one.

Now the other stuff, at $500 you are being nice. It looks like he keeps a decently clean area, but any open containers of powder would be compromised, and I'd throw away. The dies are entry level, case trimmer is good, Powder dispenser should be good, extra brass might be good, might not.

I would think $350 based on the pictures. If that keg is sealed and something useful then maybe more. A few thousand primers that might not be shown would also add $$$ fast in this climate.

If it were me, I'd be around $250 since I'd probably toss most of it. If the powder is open and dried out or contaminated it's not worth my time, but I don't trust anyone to reload ammo for me and lots of other people do, so you might be comfortable with shooting open containers of powder. I wouldn't be. Too many what if's. What if he dumped the powder back into the wrong bottle?
