Ok...my new FoxPro Prairie Blaster showed up yesterday morning. So I thought I would right up a quick "first impressions" review of the unit and how it compares to my current FoxPro OCC (Open Country Call).

Here is more info on each unit if interested:

http://www.allpredatorcalls.com/prairie_blaster.htm

http://www.allpredatorcalls.com/occ.htm

So....remember...this is MY opinion and my likes and dislikes....YMMV.

Ok...so I open the box and remove the BP,remote, paper work, etc. The first thing kinda reminded me of what my wife said the first time we hooked up..."WOW...that thing is HUGE!!"

Yep...its a biggy. The fit and finis is nice. A more "commercial" / finished look vs the OCC. The OCC has that...American made in the garage look.

The way the decoy wire connects to the unit is nicer as well. The wire is also longer and stronger then the one on the OCC. But with that it does not "flop" about like the OCC decoy does. I prefer the OCC motion to the PB.

The control panel on the side of the PB is a nice touch but I never missed not having one with the OCC. Everything on the OCC is done via the remote. But I guess this would allow you to use the PB if you lost your remote of the batts in the remote went dead, etc.

Speaking of remotes...the one with the PB is very nice. It is larger and has better resolution then the one with the OCC. I have not played around with it yet but it has many more options then the OCC remote.

So...as for the sound quality and loudness of the two units....

The sound quality sounds about the same to my ears. Where the PB shines is with its shear LOUDNESS!! Wow....I thought the OCC was loud....don't get me wrong...the OCC is no slouch. I started off way back when with a FX-3 and the OCC is WAY louder then it was. This thing cranks! It is really going to be good for the wide open areas I like to hunt in.

The PB uses 8 D cell batts. where as the OCC uses 8 AA batts. I have a extra batt pack for the OCC and it is fitted in the inside so you have spares on hand all the time.
The rated batt life of the PB is 20 hours of continuous play. So I don't think it will be a issue. I bought some PowerMax 11,000ah batts for it...so it should be gtg.

On on that note. The PB does not come with batts or a charger. The OCC came with one set of rechargeable AA and a AC/DC fast charger.
It cost me over $250.00 to buy the rechargeable D batts and a good battery charger (PowerMax unit aka MaHa brand). Yes you can buy sheaper batts and charger but still count on a extra $100+ for batts and charger.

Overall I like the unit...then again I have not packed it around yet...it is heavy. And I carry a 25+ lbs backpack when I am hunting (water, knife, shooting sticks, fire starting equipment, ground cloth, snacks, etc.) so every extra pound starts being felt when you have hiked a couple of miles to a stand..

If I had to do over I think I would have just been as happy with the OCC. But hey...its just money.

I will post some updates ones I get out and actually use it.

Take care,Stan

I never had a issue with the older remote that my OCC has....I have put the call out to 150 yrds with no problem.

I am wondering about the PB and new remote as the call itself does not have a external antenna. I am hoping to get out in the morning for some yote hunting and will be testing it then. Will post results.

Take care,Stan

Re: NEW FOXPRO PRAIRIE BLASTER REVIEW

My buddy just ordered a C24 from their custom shop with the large speaker like what was found on the older WT's. Anxious to see and hear it. he should have it next week.

Ah, the Lightening Jack, has to be the best sequence ever, first time I heard it I wanted to put the damn thing out of its misery. I've never run a decoy before, what kind of reaction do you get with those?
Thanks for the review, can't wait for a field report!

Well I never wear camo....I see a lot of guys who get all decked out with face mask's,etc. Not me....as you see below...that is my normal coyote attire.

The decoy really makes a difference...the yotes focus on it and not much else. From what I have seen...coyotes heavily rely on their nose. And it is movement and not colors, shapes, etc., that attract their attention.

I killed a yot a couple of weeks ago...it was in a area were there was no trees, big rocks, etc. for miles! I was hunkered down behind a small rack about the size of a small suitcase almost laying down...no camo....black jeans and tan T-shirt and boonie hat....call was about 75 yrds out. The yote came in almost directly at me....he started to circle down wind of the call but never even once looked at me. He got about 125+ yrds away and I smoked him.

Take care,Stan

Re: NEW FOXPRO PRAIRIE BLASTER REVIEW

Awesome, I hunt a lot of wide open wheat fields and I normally don't have problems getting them to come running, but they definitely see me, so its a trick to set up and hit them before they get too close and get smart. I will have to look into getting a decoy set up.
Thanks!

Re: NEW FOXPRO PRAIRIE BLASTER REVIEW

Ha, I was just looking at that same page, I run a regular Fox Pro for a lot of stands,so a seperate decoy might be better then swapping the whole system for now. I hope to concentrate on calling cats in the mountains this year, so that makes for looong sits, and a little decoy action might be the trick.
Thanks for the info.

I will second the vote on the lightning jack.

Re: NEW FOXPRO PRAIRIE BLASTER REVIEW

Every time I walk by the Prairie Blaster in the store I think of coyote hunters "be-bopping" out to their stand carrying it on their shoulder like a boom box. Sometimes they even have baggy pants on and wear their hats off to one side.

I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to haul that damn thing around up here right now. Deep deep snow, rifle, a dead coyote or two and that thing would surely wear a guy out in a hurry.

Re: NEW FOXPRO PRAIRIE BLASTER REVIEW

Geez, that thing looks like it could be the sound system right out of our movie theatre. More power to you if you enjoy lugging that thing around.

Re: NEW FOXPRO PRAIRIE BLASTER REVIEW

+1 on fox pro products I use a firestorm and am more than happy with it. Speaking of decoys if you guys do a lot of howling you might want to look at the kojo decoy lightweight portable and effective.

Re: NEW FOXPRO PRAIRIE BLASTER REVIEW

Sorry to bump an old post, but I have an opportunity to buy a 2 year old Prairie Blaster for $350. Sounds like an awesome deal, but are the new Fox Pro's just that much better that I should focus on a newer model?

Any input would be great!

Thanks!

Thank you. Just wondering if going that cheaper route for a two year old caller
would be smarter than just buying new.

I'm new at the coyote hunting game, so I just want to make the right moves starting out.

Thanks again!
