I've been watching this subject pretty closely. I shot a box of lot #3100547 through my new 5R milspec and had no such issues as others. No marks around the primer, flattening, or ejection problems. Temperatures in my neck of the woods is much less than other parts of the country however.

Cruze5 - in the post above shot the same lot number as myself. The groups were not that great but, managed 1 MOA out to 500 pretty easily.

I must say that this load recoiled less than the Federal Gold Match 175gr shot the same day.

Shot a box of lot #3100508 yesterday. AE MkI with 24" barrel. Approximate elevation 25 meters above sea level. Temperature in the high 80s/low 90s, extremely high humidity (sporadic rainstorms). I shot two groups of 5 rounds each at 100 yards, and another individual fired two groups, for 20 rounds total. No pressure signs were observed, and the load printed roughly to the same point of aim as my control ammo, 175gr SMKs loaded with 45.0 Varget. Recoil was noticeably greater, although not to a disruptive degree. Accuracy, however, was consistently disappointing in comparison to both my handloads and standard 168gr FGMM.

Rather than printing typical <.5 MOA groups, the Superformance averaged 1.174 MOA across all four groups.

1st group (mine): .985 MOA center-to-center, vertically dispersed with a width of .335" and height of 1.001"
2nd group (mine): 1.084 MOA center-to-center, width of 1.013" height of .836"
3rd group: .792 MOA center-to-center, somewhat vertically distributed with a width of .447" and height of .795"
4th group: 1.835 MOA center-to-center dispersed horizontally, width of 1.825" and height of .600". Shooter stated that it "felt" like an extremely good group with clean sight picture and break after each shot, no called flyers...it just walked horizontally.

In comparison, out of 10 5-round groups shot alternatively between myself and the other shooter using 175gr handloads, the mean group size was .6388 MOA center-to-center, with a minimum group of .313 MOA and a maximum of .929 MOA (the first and only group fired by the other individual without his glasses on, which skews that average unfairly upwards).

In all fairness to Hornady, it was definitely a hot day, and the barrel temperature was likewise elevated..however, none of my own loads exhibited any of the same stringing effects observed in the 178-grainers. It might give great ballistic performance downrange, and it might be worthwhile to try additional boxes and/or lots, but in my rifle at least, the velocity gains don't appear to be worth the lost edge in accuracy.

Should I expect better accuracy with 178 gr over 168 gr in this ammo? I'm shooting a 700P LTR with a 20" barrel that is 12" standard twist. Just wanted to see what kind of performance to expect before I purchased some of this ammo. Thanks in advance for your help.

I had terrible accuracy results when shooting 178 Superformance amongst FGMM168, TAP 168 AMAX, BH168 in my Savage 10 FCP HS.

Not to mention the crazy muzzle flash in lowlight conditions.

We arn't talking about Amaxs. the new BTHP 178's are suppesed to be far better but only come as loaded ammo.

I purchased 5 boxes and just checked my lot # 3100932 it seems this ammo may be heat effected? I am in Texas and been shooting in 95 & 100 degree condition. A word on Hornady customer service: if you survive the problem rounds, they make things right.

I had a few bad rounds awhile back, called them, sent in the cases and pics, and 4 full boxes, got 6 boxes, newer lot number, no problems with the new stuff.

They asked if the gun was OK, it was, not sure what they woulda done if it had been damaged.

I think Hornady is still behind the curve on this round, especially in terms of being aware of and responding to issues related to the primers. It may very well be that the engineer I spoke with was unaware of the actual number of lots involved...

Anyway, I had Hornady replace my 178gr Superformance ammo with 168gr Amax loads, and they were happy to do so. Darwin @ Hornady also sent me a box of their "revised" 178gr Superformance ammo to test in my 16" LMT 308MWS. According to Darwin, they have started to stake the primers to try to avoid smoking, popping, etc, in gas guns.

I ran 10 rounds through my LMT last weekend. No smoked or popped primers, but I did see ejector swipes and the primers looked a bit flattened. I have an Aimpoint Comp M4s mounted on my LMT, so I didn't really shoot for groups. I'll post the lot number this evening when I can get another look at the box.

ETA: MV was 2525fps (ES 40) out of my 16" 1:10 C/L barrel, vs 2467fps (ES 54) for the Hornady 168gr Amax load, same barrel.

What dammage could this cause to a gas gun? Could it cause a bullet strike on a muzzle brake ? Maybe a bolt needing replaced?

So after doing a little reading seemed like a few people thought it might be a brass problem. I thought I would try some Lapua Brass/CCI BR2 primers with these loads(I did neck turn all the Lapua brass). So I pulled ten out of the box weighted everything and this is what I came up with.

Started the shooting string first shot the lapua load then to Hornady alternated between the two for the entire box.

These were fired out of a gap sporting a 23” rock. First shoot I could not find impact. Thinking that it is a way hotter load then I shoot ( Bergers 185 at 2560fps) thought I could be shooting over the target. So I shot at the lower target. Found my impact, it was 3 MOA low. Made my adjustment and sent them down range. I can say accuracy was not the best. 6 of the 9 in each load were ¾ MOA but had 3 in each group hit around the 2 MOA mark.

So after shooting, the Lapua Brass it did not hold up any better than the Hornady (half of all of them leaked gas). The last Lapua round (AT 2914!!!) did pop the primer out.

I also took the Hornady brass that was primed and loaded it with 44grs of Varget and topped them with 175gr SMKs COAL 2.802. None leaked any gas around the primes.

Just so everyone knows that the gun does shoot (I may not be able to) Dmar1942 shot this 5 shot group with the 175s.

Note: I forgot to tell him that cold bore it always shoots ½ an MOA low.Also zeroed the turrets and it was on the money(for the 175s over the Varget load) have no idea why it was 3 MOA low with the Hornady load( guess it could have been shooting flat)?

But what was your velocity with the Hornady primed brass, possibly loose necks from bullets being pulled (my testing showed 30 fps or so slower if not resized, and a perceptible difference in seating resistance, but still tight enough to use in a semiauto...)?

Seems like the Lapua brass gives worse velocity results consistency-wise with the 178 H-HPBTs? I ran the numbers and got this:

I'd like to know the water capacities, with precise case length, of your fired Hornady and Lapua brass. I'm suspecting a difference big enough to make a difference. I seem to remember that QuickLOAD shows some surprisingly large pressure differences with only 50 fps faster.

But it seems safe to say that the charge weight used with that mystery uber-powder is unsafe in Lapua brass under those bullets in your rifle. This is *assuming* that part of the legendary quality of Lapua is a harder head capable of being abused better than most.

The numbers in the left column were the Lapua brass (virgin) the right column was the Hornady factory loads. The Lapua brass was necked turned so I am sure that helped with the velocities. I was going to get volume of the cases have just been busy I will see about getting that taken care of.

Yes no more Hornady powder in Lapua brass for my rifle. When I read the first powder charge I was questioning weather or not I even wanted to try it.

hornady is replacing all(200 rounds)of my previously listed lot number with new ammo

he said the previous ammo, the primers were not crimped, at the chamber pressure was up to 64,000

the new ammo the primers are crimped and will be a more controlled pressure.

it will be be in my possesion on the 1rst of next month

I just got a call from Hornady. my lot #3100508 that I sent back was tested at 61,000 psi.They offered to replace with new super performance or 168 A-max or BTHP. I went with the 168 A-max. He said that the new super performance would not have primer issues but could still have ejector swipes with my gas gun. sent in 20 fired brass and one full box and they are sending me three boxes as replacement. I am very pleased with there level of concern with this issue and follow through.

Rob has been keeping up on this and getting you guys some info.

I happened to see this today and I happened to get a call from the folks at Hornady and i asked some questions. Hope the info is helpfull.

SAAMI standard pressure for this round is 62000 PSI. Also if you are running these rounds in your bolt guns you shouldn't have any issues.

Guys that run 6.5-284 the pressure level on those rounds are up near 69000 and all is well.

There is "NO" recall and nothing wrong with lot 508. The results and issues are different with each shooter and there weapon.

The fix to help out in the semi autos was the actual stacking of the primers to help eleveate some of the issues.

Hornady posted a link that I am sure is posted in this thread and I dont have the time to dig it up explaining the way teh superformance powder burns and the issues with gas systems.

It has nothing to do with "EXCESS" pressure. It deals with the longer, stronger, duration of the powder burn and how it effects gas systems and why it causes blown primers.

As a side not anyone running a POF and shooting superformance in either .308 or 6.5 CM after talking with POF and while doing some accuracy testing and tweaking to use these cartridges in POF rifles we have found that if you turn your gas plug to the supressed setting it will run like a champ.

I have used a few lots of the superformance and I have had no issues at all. Matter of fact my 26 inch KMW .308 is pushing these out at 2820 fps and driving tacks.

Well I had not been keeping up on the board until recently.(moved and could only check from time to time) But I have many .308's as most here seem too. Know I am getting in late on the discussion but since things are not ironed out I will try to get some and shoot in all my bolt guns and AR-10 style rifles. I am interested in seeing what they do in my FN XP 18". Seems like Hornady is at least listening and trying to get things right. Funny I ran across this today as it was last night I threw out 5 pieces of hornady brass that poped primers all thre times i loaded them when all my other brass has never poped a primer makes me want to see if the brass was from Hornady match. Anyway sounds like Hornady is being a stand up company thus far.

So much for using this load in south florida. Actually, I might be able to squeeze in a shoot during the 2 weeks in January, and that's early in the morning. LOL!!

So much for using this load in south florida. Actually, I might be able to squeeze in a shoot during the 2 weeks in January, and that's early in the morning. LOL!! </div></div>
