Great idea, so why not! Savage is getting A LOT of free publicity as a result.

Traveling to matches and paying for accommodation is not cheap. And reloading for 338 LM is at least 3x more expensive than reloading for a 308.

Slash0311 you are correct the wind at Camp Atterbury is pretty sketchy and it was moving pretty good as you can see in the video. I had between 9 and 10 minutes of right wind dialed in which as it turned out was pretty close. The SD on the load that I used consistently runs 4-6 fps. In 2001 both of my hands were crushed in an industrial accident and all the fingers on my left hand and two of the fingers on my right with the exception of my thumbs were crushed or amputated, so the trigger finger I use on my left hand is actually pieces of my ring finger that they salvaged to create an index finger. That is where the nickname of 7fingers came from. The NRA/ELR National Match is a great event and I look forward to being there again next year!

So, it's "the indian AND the arrow". As well, of course, as the arrow launcher. Savage does a very good job on their barrels and with a good indian with good arrows, he can do the exceptional. Which you have! I'm sure you pay the utmost attention to all three aspects. And it has shown well!

I guess that's why I've always had a problem with it, I take it literally. As you say, a "woods/nature-wise" Indian can see where to put a good arrow. The arrow does not "magically" find it's way to the target. I may better understand the meaning of that phrase now.

Must be one heck of a hand gun in 33 Nosler! Curious how long the barrel is, and what speed you get (not that speed is the be all and end all).... and what powder works best in such gun....If you care to share your secrets! Might want to try that one day.

Have a Remington 700 that is begging for a new barrel... What could possibly be easier to lug around on a long hunt up and down steep hillsides... ?

Edit: Checked the weight of the new Nosler M48 pistol: 5.5 lbs before scope and rail has been added. One pound less than my ligtest 30-06 hunting rifle with a pencil barrel. As a comparison, a really big pistol like the Desert Eagle 50AE is 4.5 lbs.

@7fingers: Would be real curious what your long range pistols weigh? Is there a way to lighten them and get total weight below 4.5 lbs?

I wonder if you will need a Charlie TARAC on your Anschutz Olympic rifle at 600, or 1000 yards... Does anybody have a ballistic calculator that can determine at what distance is the wind drift of a 22 identical to that of a 338 at 2000 yards?

Maybe that will become the affordable version of ELR for those of us who struggle to find a shooting range that goes beyond 600!

I can get to 450ish dialing and close to 600 using the rest of the reticle.

Good to know. Let’s round that up to an even 300 yards.

Would be fascinating to watch ELR shooters with their big boomer 375’s competing with 22 LR specialists (with the ELR targets at 2000 and the rimfire targets at 300)... alternating and shooting in the same wind. I guess the mirage will be much more severe for the 2000 targets, so perhaps an unfair match-up....

There are several ranges in the Houston area that goes out to 300 or beyond.... so all my excuses for not getting into ELR has just evaporated! ?

This was the wind I was shooting in. An AR in the video though.

For me, ELR remains a far off dream... maybe one day!

Convinced my son-in-law to put the CAT D-80 to good use on our sheep ranch in Namibia and open up the area next to the biggest chalk pan, so we can shoot out to 1,400 yards. More than that would require us to build a shooting tower, to get over the tall camel thorn (acacia) trees...

Mmmmmm..... that makes me think: Repurpose the old wind mill, it has a nice high tower, about 20 feet high, and create a set of berms at 1500, 2000 and 2500 from old truck tires. Don’t want to thin out the sheep!

Or move to Arizona.

Then again: My wife is going to kill me if i buy another rifle this year.... ? Especially a monster like a 375 CT with a 34” barrel...

On a more serious note: We do have a set of Blaser R93 rifles on the ranch. Barrels are interchangeable, which is kind of cool. Biggest caliber is 416 Remington (for Mr. hippo and up), but there is also a 338LM barrel. I think the barrels are 24” long, so a bit less speed. Has anybody ever tried a 416 in ELR?? Will run a few calcs in Strelok.

Good to know, presume they use 416 Barrett with solid copper bullets? What is the best brass option?

Had a quick go at Strelok and a 400 grain projectile from a 416 Rem will only do 2,400 fps. Presume that is from standard 24” hunting barrels. Could perhaps achieve 2,600 fps with a new long barrel, different choice of powder and careful hand loading. Or not!

No surprise: Not many high BC bullets listed for 416, and almost all are hunting bullets. One stood out: The Lutz Moeller bullet with a claimed G1 BC of 1.084. Can a G1 BC really be that high??? Is that a real bullet, is their BC inflated?? [For comparison, the best 416 bullet from Cutting Edge is heavier at 470 gn, and it has a G1 BC of 0.88... so i am a little skeptical of the 1.08 number...]

Anyway, assuming the fairy dust bullet is real, and with an assumed MV of 2,400 Strelok says the projectile goes subsonic at 2100 yards. Assuming 2600 fps, and that gets you to 2400 yards (when the bullet dros below 1150 fps). [Not that i trust Strelok‘s transonic model... especially with G1 data.... presume Applied Ballistics might be the better choice.]

But i guess the point of the ELR game is to shoot through the transonic region and still hit targets at extreme distances without the bullet going unstable...

Several are in the great state of Texas... ‘only’ a four hour drive for me... which is actually doable over a normal weekend.

Perhaps not too surprising, only one ELR range (so far) on the East Coast.

Had a good day at the SWE ULR Match Scott A. and I both hit 5 for 5 at 2195 yards. Mine was with a Cadex Shadow 375ct 32 in 1-7 twist off of a Accu-Tac bipod with 400 gr Lazer Cutting Edge bullets. Scott was with a DTA 37xc not sure what the bullets was. We are allowed 1 sighting round at each distance we shoot at . The distances today were 1768, 2195, 2635 with a non-scored target 3090. I did hit 1 of 5 at the 3090 target.
