Rifle Scopes New Razor????

Folks, they have arrived. I will get everyone's order out tomorrow, at the time of this writing I have four units left unclaimed. Thanks!!!
Vortex said a couple years ago their goal was to have a much larger base of product available immediately after announcement to avoid the months and years of waiting, sounds like they are fulfilling this which is encouraging, especially consider the Gen II scopes were on backorder for over a year.

That’s was a huge part of how they released this. They wanted dealers to have them on hand or in route when announced

I think some in this forum might get 'Vortex' etched into their tombstones
(and possibly embed a rusty pot-metal Harris bipod into the face).
So I think they are holding their own in the Fanboy department.:ROFLMAO:

I've had success with both brand's offerings.:)

Most brands have spectacularly dedicated fanboys. My basic yardstick though is simple: who yells at me the loudest when I do not pronounce their favourite product the latest and greatest bestest thing since slice bread. It is Nightforce fanboys and PA's ACSS fanboys. That's when I simply do not declare them the best. If I dare to actually offer critique... might as well go into witness protection. Any other brand's fanboys are a distant third at best.

Funny thing is that I really like some of the ATACR scopes and some of the ACSS reticles, but I am almost afraid to say it out loud since the cognitive dissonance might cause a collective aneurysm in some of the fanboy crowd.

Can someone that has or is getting a gen 3 that also has a gen 2 take a side by side pic? Color seems off when I see some pics of the gen 3 but that could be because of the light color temperature.

Was one of things I planned to do but not just color but size. Will do it unless someone else does it first.

Thanks. Weird lighting then. My gen 2 looks more reddish. Taken under daylight 5000k balance bulbs.

@Glassaholic i wasn't sure if those were preproduction or actual production scopes. If people are getting them now I was guessing more actual production. Also the gen 3 in the Vortex side by side video looks a little more goldish and the lighting wasn't daylight balanced.

To the naked eye, they aren’t the same

Quick and dirty, since I don't have time to setup anything elaborate today, but the lighting is even. I pulled a new Gen II, so no one can can go into sun fading etc. The Gen III is a hair shade lighter and almost unnoticeable; HOWEVER, that is not uncommon when batch coating, and variations are more common then people think. There are probably Gen IIs out there that would match up. That said, if you're overly concerned about the "shade differences," then you probably don't pull your rifle out of the safe often enough for it to matter, lol. On the Gen III, the objective bell is slightly longer with a resulting change in the taper, and the occular and eye piece are slightly shorter with a taper on both sides. The elevation turret is roughly .25" taller from the Gen II to the Gen III. And, the sunshade it shorter, which is probably to compensate for the longer objective bell so as to not increase the overall length.

Given everyone's first impressions and the price bracket alone I think it is very much expected for it to best the MK5.

FWIW for mag ring, my little brothers New Gen II we got from Scott has a super smooth mag ring. So I'm guessing they fixed that a while ago.

How about a glass report vs your favorite mid-tier (Mk5) and the reigning King ZCO... does she fall in-between or more MK5?

Dan only had it out for a short time this weekend and was very impressed with this new Razor. We will be evaluating it even more after Shot Show when we have time :) Vortex knocked it out of the park IMO.

WI shooter here, I've been using a Gen2 Razor since 2015. Couple of questions if you don't mind...

1. The weight of the Razor has been discussed and debated a lot, it's heavy, but not the end of the world for PRS type shooting. What I'm wondering is why exactly is the Razor so much heavier than its direct competitors? The Gen3 Razor at 45oz is 7oz heavier than a ZCO 527, and 15 ounces heavier than a Leupold MK5 5-25. Is it more durable, have more lens elements...etc? Is it that heavy on purpose, or just as a side effect of the design?

2. Why doesn't Vortex sell the Razor in black? It's argued a lot on here, and some people get pretty angry about wanting black or telling other people "you're not a real shooter if you care about the color." At the end of the day...I'd rather have one in black.

Thanks,

Sam

I feel like since the Razor has been bronze since the beginning, it's a brand identity thing. Similar to Ferrari red, etc. If you see an awesome rifle with a scope that color, you know it's a Vortex. It's actually pretty good marketing.

Incredible first impressions. Compared to ZCO, TT, March, Kahles, and old Gen IIs. Everyone sounds overly impressed.

Tangent owner said that if Tangent didn't exist he's buying a Gen III over everything else. I'm on the hype train but it's looking like Vortex has a genuine successor to the Gen II. I mean given the first impressions it looks like it's competing way above it's price range much like the Gen II did back in the day.

Hi Sam,
My answers are probably going to sound a little vague because I cant go into fine detail. So I apologize for that in advance. However I think it really does boil down to the answers below.

1. As rothgyr stated. it's mainly a brand identity thing
2. The weight is just a by product of the overall design(specs/features)

On another note, if you are in WI you should swing by the showroom sometime. I'd be more than happy to come out and chat.

Best Regards
Scott

I noticed the Tangent guy kept pretty quiet, but an impressive lineup of scopes they had to evaluate. Sounds like a bunch of these are being shipped out to users so by this time next week we should be hearing a lot more first hand feedback.

Not to sound like a troll, but Ferraris are sold in colors other than red…

So are Vortex scopes. But, how many other supercars do you see that are Ferrari red?🤔
This makes no sense. Ferrari red is the branding color, and what everyone thinks of when they think Ferrari. But each car is available in a multitude of colors...you know, the actual product, people can choose what color they want.

Tiffany blue is just the box...you can buy whatever setting, metal, diamond you want.

You can buy a Rolex in any color and metal you want, it's not like they have just one. People will still know it's a Rolex.

It's like me wrapping my scope in $4 Amazon camo tape to cover up the brown is somehow better for the Vortex brand than just offering it in black.

Ferraris should only be red, and Vortex isn’t the Ferrari of scopes.

One of the dudes I shoot with bought his first Razor Gen II a couple of years ago.

When I asked him what the color of the scope was called, he replied, “Mistake”.

After looking through it and shooting it on the 1000 yard line, we both decided we didn’t care what color it was.

I’ve since bought three Gen II and just ordered a Gen III moments ago.

Can’t get a Tiffany box in any other color either. 😝

How many colors can you get an ATACR in?
