New guy here. Lurking for a while, gather as much info as possible on scopes. Frankly, I have come to believe there is almost too much information here to take in and grasp quickly, but I love it.

I have a Savage 110 BA 338 LM. Shot it with an old BSA scope just to be able to shoot it. Knowing of course its not good enough for such a rifle. So now I'm searching, but have less than 1400 to spend.

I've already hit a handful of threads and have narrowed it down to a few, SWFA SS, Sightron SIII(50-60 objective range), Leupold MK4 or VX-3(not sure which is better), Weaver Super Slam.

Any other ideas would be helpful. I'm pretty new to the long range shooting world.

Re: New rifle, scope searching nightmare

I have been real impressed with my SWFA 5-20's and from the looks I have had through a couple different Bushnell 3.5-21 g2dmr, that may be my next scope.

Re: New rifle, scope searching nightmare

Thanks, just wished my area had some selections to go look through. Not ideal buying without being able to look through. Have to follow gut and recommendations.

Re: New rifle, scope searching nightmare

Dude, I feel your pain. I bought a nice rifle and spent months reading all the threads here on the hide. It was probably the most frustrating thing I've been through in a while. I did however run across one thread that was awesome. It mentioned " SWFA Sample List". Man this place has more scopes than you can shake a stick at. They have some used higher end scopes for very nice prices. I bought my Valdada 3.5-18X50 SFP there. Saved about $300.00. I cannot and will not try to stear you toward a specific style or model. Just keep reading and looking through the sample list. You'll find what you'll need. stay well and happy shooting.

why not a nightforce? for a 338 lapua, you've spent over 1000$ on the right, your paying at least 5$ per shot, I would get the best optical system you can afford, you don't want your optics to be the weak point in your set up

I agree completely with Jay. He and Chris have helped me over the last few years with scope selection and everything has worked out perfectly. I would suggest a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X50 and if you
can afford it with Zero Stop and High Speed Turrets. You will never regret it.

Re: New rifle, scope searching nightmare

What Jay & Santo said, that's what I have on my 110 BA .338 lapua and love it, have NF high rings and that gives me 80 MOA available go up

Re: New rifle, scope searching nightmare

There are a couple SS 5-20s for sale in the classifieds for less than retail.

You can't go wrong with one of those on your 338lm.
They have long eye relief, repeatable tracking, excellent glass, great turrets, and a lot of adjustment.

You will not be disappointed. I know, i have one

I'm starting to believe that too. I PM'd CANAVAR about his

Re: New rifle, scope searching nightmare

.338 LM for a starter gun huh?? Thats what I really wanted because they were actually affordable to buy, not so much in the feeding department though. I will own one soon enough if I can find a place to shoot it.

I was about to pull the trigger on a NF F1 but kinda glad I didnt now. After stopping off at SWFA one day and fondling a SS 5-20x50 I think I made the right choice. Picked one up in the classifieds NIB for a good price. There are some SMOKING deals on some in there right now. If I would have waited a week I could have got illuminated for $25 bucks more....oh well.

Re: New rifle, scope searching nightmare

Nope not a starter. Just the first magnum rifle. I've own a handful in my lifetime, just none like this. Majority of mine are pistols, shotguns, pistol chambered carbines, or medium rifles. Which one can get away with using inexpensive scopes.

Working with CANAVAR to buy his now.
