I still remember back in the very early days of the Hide when the same pissing match, arm chair shooters and those who knew everything would eat up on a shooter who hit a 1000 yard target with a 338LM, It just never ends. But yet the industry has been pushed and now folks are screaming the same negatively while the 4000 yard window is being pushed.

Honestly I think this whole discussion took a wrong turn when a fellow shooter who was jacked/excited about someone else’s accomplishment accidentally used the word world record versus new longest hit in competition under the clock or new personal best In the title of this thread.

Good points have been made but many statements as far as the accuracy, inconsistency and others are null. Maybe some of you folks are used to having the extreme spreads in your speed and tend to spray bullets all over but a lot of the equipment used in theses events are accurate and can achieve very tight verticals at distance if they didn’t you would not see the repetitive impacts plates and scores. I for one knows what it takes and have proved it on targets in the past. For most it’s more of a game against the wind pushing the bullet left and right as well as the bullet up and down due to wind currents and the terrain. Thats the real challenge to understand and correct off of with limited shots and the clock ticking away.

After reading all the comments its very obvious that everyone seems to have their own idea as to how a event should be run and what shape and size the targets should be, heck this is a prime example as to why the event organizers have the same problem. If you think a certain range has a bogus set of targets or format then find something that fits your needs and go shoot there instead, but just maybe you could attend one of these so called events that have the large plates and a boat full of shooters with poor skills and sub par equipment and go kick there butts it should be like taking candy from someone if its as easy as you say.

Its to bad everyone had to have a shit storm on a thread where someone was pretty proud of their accomplishments or of a fellow shooters accomplishment. Then you wonder why the shooting community struggles at times with growth hell I wonder what a new up and coming shooter wanting to stretch things out beyond his goals must think after reading 4 pages of what?

I completely understand the "O shit, I hit that" mentality as well as the CHALLENGE mentality.

Question....would the challenge NOT be the same if an ELR match went something like this:

T1 @1500 yards. Any gun, Any sight system. Target size is 1MOA. Must hit 2 of 3 to move on.
T2 @2000 yards. Any gun, Any sight system. Target size is 1MOA. Must hit 2 of 3 to move on.
T3 @2500 yards. Any gun, Any sight system. Target size is 1 MOA. Must hit 2 of 3 to move on.
Continue the distances until nobody makes it.

IF that is not challenging enough then drop target size down to 3/4MOA, then 1/2MOA???

Because one of the keys into getting your barrel system into the .mil hands is to show exactly the above more than farther/larger combinations, IMO that is.


We have production model Aspis set for completion first of May. I am trying to expedite a few things for 375 Swiss P by then but can throw a 300NM together and make the visit to Spearpoint for sure.

The more you shoot these matches, the more you dislike the hit to move on. A guy catches bad timing with the wind for 5-6 minutes while shooting the short target and you’re out.

YEP the hit to move on sucks if you do not hit, no doubt about that. @Diver160651 outline is way better for sure.
@Diver160651 you want to put that style match on in August or September? I will sponsor it and pay all range fees, ROs, etc etc

BUT it does a few different things while sucking.....

1. It shines light onto the misperception that 2500m and 3000m is "done all day with no problems because we are hitting at 2+ miles" that is filling all aspects of ELR marketing and social medias.
A. Same thing as all the "my gun is 1/4MOA all day"...BS because I can show you this past California State BR competition where that 1/4MOA rifle would put you in top 5.

2. It provides a non sugar coated, no BS..that shooter is the winner; no doubt about it he/she fucking won. They beat the environmental conditions hands down with pretty much zero luck.

3. It highlights that the industry in itself is not advanced to the point some think it has (Hence pushing for more companies to advance it); well at least in terms of affordability (Hence my previous post of the 200k+ dollars in support equipment the .gov types have).

4. It gives newer shooters getting into or wanting to get into ELR a realistic expectation. Right now we have guys coming in thinking that their 6.5CM puts them in the running to be able to win a 2k match because they read somewhere someone hit 2500yd with it.

There are lots of different events that SUCK if you do not do well right out the gate..

National and International Sambo/Ju-Jitsu single elimination tournaments. Nothing like travelling all the way to Romania and loosing first round, lol.

Race car teams having to "qualify" for race day. Nothing like hauling entire race team from coast to coast to have your crew chief not read the environmental conditions correctly and you do not even qualify for the race.

And that’s fine for professionals but not your average guy just wanting to shoot a match. There has to be a certain amount of enjoyment involved for the casual shooter to get them to commit to travel and other expenses. Even if I’m confident in my equipment and wind reading, I won’t travel very far to a match that is 100% hit to move on. I like how Steve Wirth does it. The first 6 targets are shot By everyone. Have to hit 6 and then the rest are hit to move on.

With a hit rate sometimes around 5-10%. Again, I wouldn't dispute that there is a lot of skill required to get 5-10% in that situation instead of 0%, but I think it's a valid question whether that's too far to build a competition around.

I’ve watched a lot of their videos and had they ran a 36”plate often they’d have a vastly higher % than what you gave them.
That the challenge is more important than the hit to them is why they have my respect.

Yeah, it's hard to say, we don't know how many shots are shown vs not, nor do I have time to keep track, but some of the videos have been very low hit rates. And I specifically said I think they must have a lot of skill (this, for the reading impaired, means they have my respect as well).

Would I do the same thing if I had a convenient location with that much land? Absolutely! Would I expect people to travel from all over the country for a competition with a hit rate of 10%? No way. Is there any practical value of such an exercise? I really don't think so.

Exactly. I have to drive six hours to go past 1000 yards, and that's worth it to me every now and then, although I can't do that often enough to expect to be very good. But I flew to a match where in the final round the hit rate was 6% across all competitors. That, to me, is not really worth it and involves too much luck to hold my interest. (Again, there's skill too—it's like poker in that respect.)

2 of my regular locations use 1 to 1.5 MOA targets, hard work on a windy day... Maybe a target standard size
is something to be discussed, difficult to get people to agree on rules/ regs already though.

they have pheasant hunts there; how about ELR pheasant targets?

I am a former member of Core, Now Altus down in Baker, Fl and have shot Spearpoint. Don't let the pheasant hunting thing fool anyone. It is a really fun and very challenging place to shoot a normal PRS type match out to 1200 yds or so. They were just getting the ELR thing going when I left, but a difficult place to read the wind due to terrain. It's worth the trip if the chance allows to shoot there. A good place to chase "ditch chickens" too.

I can see Cloudcroft on the horizon. 90 miles. I can hit it. I think at 90 miles it is submoa. I'm at 3600 and Cathey Peak 9700. Definitely would be a bullseye if I hit the peak. Extreme mountain shooting.

The FCSA is an international organization with chapters in England, Australia and Switzerland. It sanctions ELR matches here in the states including King of 2 Miles. All King bannered matches are FCSA sanctioned and the list of countries with King bannered matches is Canada, France, Argentina, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, South Africa and England. So we are both an international sanctioning body and a sanctioner of international ELR matches.

So your truth seems to be mostly an issue of lack of knowledge combined with an unrelentingly negative response to damn near anything in the sport. The fact that you are such a cunt contributes to the fact that virtually nobody in the industry is willing to come here. I vastly prefer to settle discussions with rationale and facts. Thesis seems immune to such things and the number of times he has responded to peoples achievements or legitimate questions with degradation means the "cunt" shoe simply fits. He has been mentioned to me specifically as the reason a number of people in the match directing side of things and the manufacturing side of things simply don't come here. There are trolls on most forums, he is this ones worst offender. There is no point in tolerating such people, it only encourages them to behave worse so they can get a reaction out of someone. This place is better than people are trying to portray it.

I would suggest staying out of the Bear Pit. That is not the area to ask new person questions.

If you read and follow the rules you should be fine. If you are here trying to learn and try to put in some effort to learn you will be fine. If you come in swinging thinking you know better than everybody and calling people names for no reason then you will not do so well.

A lot of questions have been asked before. Try to ask it in roughly the right forum and you should be fine. Get the feel for the site. Cussing is allowed. There is lots of good natured ribbing. We are all adults here. Some are older than others and most don't care about feelings. If you're being an idiot they will tell you and try to help you learn. If at some point you happen to be wrong admit it and don't double and triple down. Use the search function. Sometimes it helps on some search terms (3 character ones) to use Google to do a site:snipershide.com search.

Try to pay attention to how old a thread is before you respond or at least try to add something constructive to the thread so you're not necroposting. Read more than posting. Don't ask about mil vs moa, 9 vs 45 vs 40, or many other vs type questions. They've been asked over and over and they get tiring. Try and use punctuation every now and then and also paragraphs. They help.

Seriously stay out of the Bear Pit for awhile.

Note bigblast has already necroposted (in and of itself not bad), been an askhole (same), gotten at least 1 thread deleted, gotten another thread locked, and crap posted in the PX threads (against the rules).

Honestly this is a great site and has been a resource for many shooters for years, I think there’s been about 3 or for changes with servers and some folks as myself have had to re-register but thats minor. I think I started hanging out here around 2008 if I ain’t mistake. back in the day the big event that was chattered about and was the ELR place to shoot was Thunder Valley and the Intimidator and Head Hunter rounds were what made this event a place folks wanted to travel to.

From that all the steel shooting events just took off and a lot of great knowledge was shared here on the Hide. I still say that folks called BS on the 338LMs shooting at 1000 or maybe it was 1760 back then but it doesn’t matter it was in reference to what we see today. Its folks like Theis and others that have contributed their efforts in pushing this trend to make it all happen.

Don’t take me wrong we have a tuff crowd here at times but I have been friends with many here for a long time and we share hands on knowledge that we experienced first hand versus many that go off of here say or assumptions. I can say and I am going to pick on Theis we have been on multiple shooting sites and at the end of the day we tend to spend more time were its productive - here When it comes to equipment, shooting skills and helping or sharing info.

I think my only negativity on this thread I had was how derailed it got from the topic that someone started here and probably due to how it was phrased in the title.

New folks its a tuff crowd here at times but it is usually triggered by the direction and or arrogance within the “some” of the folks participating and sometimes how folks interpret a comment in the wrong way.

So I joined this group, club, organization to get some pointers on reaching out to 1000 yards. However the verbal beatings some people have taken here makes me apprehensive to ask any questions or post any responses in threads. I guess I'll just stick to reading and hope someone asks the question I wanted to ask eventually.

It's dudes on an (anonymous, mostly) internet posting board. No subscription required. You can mute/block people that troll you. You literally have nothing at stake for asking questions and through all the bullshit (if you ask a dumb question) someone will get you a straight answer.

It hurts you as much as you let it.
