Hunting & Fishing Newfoundland Moose Hunt

You're about to get a crash course in a whole new language. My bro-in-law is a Newf, and you'll hear things like:

"Aye, 'dere B'ye,,,,, Where's ya too????"

"A'roun 'ere"

"Stay where y'er too, I'll come where y'er AT!"

--Enjoy your hunt, I'm sure you'll be both successful and entertained. I've not moose-hunted the Easter half of the country, but I've done the Western half. Besides, since the closing of the fishing waters, most of the Newfies have moved west into the industries.

Forgot to add, are you looking at hunting Labrador (mainland) or the Rock (island)?

I worked up there end of last year and into the beginning of this year. The folks are great, be prepared to get "Screeched in" if you're going to St. Johns. I've have several offers from the lads I worked with to come along for a hunt, but as a U.S. citizen, you have to have a licensed guide to legally shoot a moose or bear.

I can contact some lads and see who has the best local reputation and forward contact details...

Cheers,
Breeze

There's great hunting on the "rock", so you don't have to go to Labrador.

Hunted up there several times. Both fly in and drive in. Personally, I like the drive in camps. On the fly in hunts, what you see is what you get. We'd walk 5-10 miles/day on the fly in hunts and sometimes not see a moose. On the drive in hunts, we still walked a good bit but you had the opportunity to "high speed" relocate via a truck or wheeler. Like Newfoundland so much that I'm looking into buying a camp and tags up there. No other place on earth can a guy get a moose tag, fully guided hunt, and all lodging and meals for around $4k. The Newfie people are great and visiting that part of Canada is like going back in time to the 60's. The unit we hunt in only has one outfitter and we saw 100's of moose over two trips this past year. During the rut, the meat from the big bulls can get a little funky. I like to go up later in the year and shoot them in the snow. In addition to the moose, the duck hunting and Cod fishing is excellent. As for other places, Maine governors tags are $$$$$ unless you draw, tags for Shiras moose can also be had on the draw but the odds are insane. You can buy Shiras tags at the SFW auctions but be prepared to write a $8k-$12k check for just the tag. Alaska can be great but big $$$$$ for a guided hunt. a DIY raft trip can be done but expect some competition and you'll still be out a bunch of $$$$$. Western Canada has some good hunts but it is still big $$$$$. North central Canada has some good hunts and are not that bad $$$$ wise.
