hello, i am looking for info and pics for a nightforce compact mildot and low velocity reticle. it will be going on ar 15 ,i will be using it for varmint shooting and paper punching mostly under 300 yards, i figure 10x will be enough for my type of shooting plus i want to keep the weight down on the gun, i have no stocking dealers near me and unable to look to see how fine or wide the cross hairs are. my question is how fine is the velocity reticle vs the mildot? and are these fine for shooting crow and woodchuck type hunting , I have a buddy who has a nightforce compact with the npr2 reticle and it does not work for me i lose the cross hairs to easy when aiming at small critters, so i thought i will try either a mildot or velocity.

thanks

Re: nightforce compact suggestions

bph,

I just tried to get pics of the Mil-Dot reticle in a new 1-4x24 compact and the NP-1 reticle in a slightly older one for comparison. Sorry, but I just couldn't get any pics that did either reticle justice.

I can tell you that for me, the 1-4x24 is plenty good to 300 yd. But I can understand if you're looking for a little more mag. The Mil-Dot reticle on the 1-4x24 is still fairly fine (I also have a 3.5-15x50 and 5.5-22x50, both with the MLR reticle for comparison). If you're mainly punching holes in paper or little critters (ie. don't need ranging capability), you might consider the NP-1, which is also available on the 2.5-10x32. I put the 1-4x24 with the NP-1 reticle on a Sig 556 pistol as a CQB optic, because I don't really care for red dot-style optics. It is definitely a heavier and more easily visible reticle and would be perfect for the type of shooting you described, IMO.

Re: nightforce compact suggestions

that is what i was looking for, i am used to shooting a leupold varmint fine plex but would like the ability to dial my shots in and reset to zero, also the mildot seems a little thicker in the cross section vs the lv or is it just the photo?

thanks
