Hey all,

Recently replaced a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 with a Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40SF Mildot on my 17HMR, and I'm regretting it.

The Buckmasters scope is really clear, but the field of view sucks and it looks like you're looking through a cardboard tube. Like looking down a tunnel almost. Best I can describe it.

I went small game hunting the past two days and I'm missing shots left and right and having a real hard time getting on target. I think the limited FOV and minimum 4.5x is whats screwing me up.

I opted for a higher magnification scope because longer shots on squirrels is kinda hard with 3-9x.

Can anyone tell me about the Monarch 3-12x42? I would love to see a trough the scope picture if you can get me one.

It seems like going back to 3x and a Nikoplex reticle vs. the mildot may help. But being that it's 3-12x, will it have the same tunnel vision issue as the Buckmasters 4.5-14?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Re: Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 questions

I have the Buckmaster. Great scope. Is your eye relief correct? I don't have the tunnel effect you speak of. If you are missing shots your scope may be a dud.

As far as the 3-12, I have looked through one and it is very clear and crisp. focuses at 12x nicely at about 30 yards.

Re: Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 questions

I have the Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 in MilDot....I love the scope, very clear and haven't had any problems...Customer service is great also...One o my turrents bent while in the cruiser, Nikon replaced the scope, No Charge!

When I get home I'll see if I can get you a pic looking through it....

Re: Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 questions

I adjusted the eye relief and that seemed to enlarge the picture in the scope so hopefully that helps. I'm such a fuckin dumbass for not doing that before. LOL

We'll see how I do tomorrow.

I also thought maybe I'm not used to my Rifle Basix trigger and might be jerking the rifle since you only have a split second to get a shot off before those little grey rat bastards move.

Re: Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 questions

I have monarch 3-12x42 and have been usin it for a couple years. For the money its a great scope and I've never noticed any tunnel vision when looking through it.
Hope yours works out for you, but i'll still try to get some pics for you in the am.
If you decide to switch let me know, im replacing mine with a pst(if they ever come out) and we could probably work something out

Re: Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 questions

I have am monarch 4-16x42 and 3-12x42 both on 308s. Also a buckmasters 6-18x40 on a 17 hmr.
The monarchs do seem to have a better field of view at similar magnifications.

All that aside I wish i had got the 4.5-14 like u have instead of the 6-18 for the hmr.

Re: Nikon Monarch 3-12x42 questions

I have a 3-12x42 on a 300mag hunting rifle. I love it for an all purpose hunting rig. I put a 4-16x50 on a 6/284 and I REALLY like that scope too.

Jello, I hope the adjustment was all you needed to fix your problem. If you are still having an issue with your scope let me know and I will help you get it taken care of quickly.
Guys thanks for all the kind words about our Nikon Optics. We know you have a choice of what you put on your rifle and we are thankful we fit your needs.
