No tin foil, there's a real danger with this,

Bingo.

That's a broad brush. Don't forget ALL light too, especially since that light carries more ionizing energy than microwaves, radio waves, 3G/4G/5G, and WiFi ...better live underground I guess.

Brush away, light is an electromagnetic wave. But I never said be afraid, or anything biased.

Laughing, never had a first on this house. Caging a home is easier while bringing it out of the ground, but any home can be caged after the fact w/o much issue.

And while we're at it, might as well discuss how breathing air and digesting food produces free radicals....causing ionization and the same cell damage as external ionizing radiation.

Some studies estimate 70% of the oxidative stress you'll experience over your lifetime is from just living on earth. The remaining 25% from medical procedures and 5% from all other man-made sources.

How is the moon looking nowadays?

Life.

Never make it out alive....

It is a constant battle between the elements and the body's ability to regenerate lost cells and repair minor damage. Right from birth, that is.

Not just free radicals but cancer cells. There are hundreds of them produced in a single day, from both natural causes like errors in cell replication, or a mutation resulting from being struck by a single cosmic ray particle, or something on the same level.

When we are young, our immune systems keep that shit in check. As we get older, more and more nasty stuff tends to fall through the cracks.

Nobody can beat the effects of aging and deteriorating health. But we can spare ourselves from more headaches and woes by keeping ourselves healthy. I know 80+ year old farmers and ranchers who are still hunting and shooting guns. And I have also seen 40 year old folks bedridden in medical facilities because all they drank each day is fuckin' Coke and Pepsi.

Gotta finish off this statement with my favorite John Wayne quote: "Life is tough. It is even tougher when you are stupid." Live wisely and use your brains. God gave us that organ for a reason.

Interesting, but that concept won't work. Done properly out of the ground, a quality cage can not be seen even by most of those in the Industry. Retro fitting is different. A Spectrum analyzer an a real 90% shielded beam antenna will tell you which homes have cages real quick if your interested, in seeing whats real an fake. It's a long road with many rabbit holes. Enjoy the RF,...

If say you were already replacing your roof and a good part of your siding, could you do it sort of on the cheap with some fine mesh screens installed before the roof / siding was put back on?

Round Copper Mesh (RCM) is the best there is in today's world, just make sure the mesh opening is smaller that a full wave form of the signal/freq's your wanting to block. A metal roof works but only all the entry points of the rest of the home are sealed as well, other wise the metal roof jus becomes a reflector, both ways. One of the easiest to mod after it's built is a trailer. The metal is easy to ground to each other with special screws, an the windows be they trailer or stick built home can be modified easily. If your looking to do a complete block everything has to be sealed an grounded to each other when all doors are closed. This is a area most miss, much like believing a metal safe is a good cage, which they are not unless all areas are sealed properly. Even then all items you want to protect can not touch the outer shell. Many a test has been done on metal garbage cans an shit was fried do to gaps in the lid to can area. Simple HVAC foil tape ( you need a ohm test on the one your going to use with a quality meter) will seal this up quickly but there can be no opening/foldovers in the tape. If your just looking at keeping your computers an other electronic gear safe a Room cage is much cheaper, but many folks go for the whole home if they are coming out of the ground new.
Much depends upon what end result your after. If it's a EMP be it a CME or man made will dictate money. A CME,...if your in some circles you will get a warning long before it hit's. Man made some will get a warning but the time will be as short as 3-5 minutes at best, unless your on the end side.

On last thing NEVER ground your Cage, NEVER, an make sure all items you want to protect are insulated from the cage. Also remember if it's man made it will not be just a one an done, tactics say wait until alot more shit is un-caged then bang one again. There is gear/items that will not require shielding, but most are prior to 1972 tech, an some as far back as the early 50's.

I wonder if the cage would melt in extreme circumstances such as solar storms. The one that missed us could have fried lines two or three feet underground supposedly. Any conductive shielding subjected to that would be toast, no?

The cage will survive as long as it's not grounded, if it is it's worthless anyway.

If you have a safe that is not bolted to the floor, but is resting on say a concrete or tile surface, would that be grounded enough to make it worthless for EMP protection? (This assumes you rip out the rubber door seals & put in the metal grounding mesh strips.)

I laugh every time I see these pseudo-scientific discussions about Faraday cages.

Look, even disregarding the cost and weight of a whole-house cage, you can't break the laws of physics. And it's obvious that none of the crackpots dispensing advice here has actually built a Faraday cage, because nobody has mentioned this crucial fact:

A cage that's good enough to keep RF out will also -- obviously -- keep it in!

Did you know that every electronic device in your house is a tiny radio transmitter? It's true -- look closely at the labels or read the user's manuals and you'll see that they all comply with "FCC Part 15". That means they're "unintentional radio transmitters" and that in a normal environment their transmissions are too weak to interfere with television, AM/FM radio, etc.

But inside your Faraday cage isn't a normal environment. Those transmissions, unable to pass through the cage, are TRAPPED inside, where, through a process called "constructive interference", they build and build, getting stronger and stronger. It's easy to see that if left unchecked, the radiation will eventually become much stronger inside than outside.

What to do?

Fortunately, physics -- which caused this problem in the first place -- now comes to our rescue: The First Law of Thermodynamics says that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another. So we need to ABSORB the radio-frequency energy and CONVERT it to another, less harmful form of energy.

It turns out that devices to do this already exist, and they're surprisingly inexpensive and available. Buy a bunch, line your interior walls with them, and just as your car's brakes absorb kinetic energy and convert it to heat energy, they'll absorb the radio-frequency energy and convert it to sound energy. Note that sound energy is only "less harmful", not "harmless" -- but it's easy to protect yourself and your family from it; there's plenty of ear-protection information in other threads here.

Anyway, here's what a safe and sane, SCIENTIFIC energy-conversion installation looks like:

I’m jealous of that radio collection!

It is pretty cool. I wish they still made things out of Bakelite; it has a look that modern plastics can't really replicate.

It's not my collection, by the way -- just a photo I found on the web while searching for something unrelated. But when I saw this thread I knew it would be the perfect illustration for my little bit of satire.

Hey, go easy with the science fella. Not a lot of deep thinkers in this forum.
