i love to hike in the summer to be in killer shape for fall deer. This year i realized that i need a pack rifle, i used to carry a H&R .22 with a dinky 3-9 scope took a couple whistle pigs, but couldnt in good faith pop a yote, same problem with the 17HMR [ great round btw was shooting 1.5inches at 200 yds with not too bad of drop]. Now im ready for a different caliber

my requirements are simple
light as hell [5-6 lbs]
.223 preferablly
breaks down to fit in a pack rather simply
takes a scope
decently acurate 1 to 1.5 ins at 100 yds
AND CHEAP $400 or less [ yes i know that limits me mostly to used guns] I dont want to F up a great rifle

ive been looking at the kel-tec su-16
building an AR [20 in barrel not an m-4orgery] from del-ton

but as of right now im more leaning toward a .223 h&r break action. I shot one of these at the public range that had been accurized [pillar bedded and action slop fixed]. Had a 22 in barrel and as there name implys was a "handi-rifle" to carry

opinions??? experence???

Re: pack rifles?

I know that this does not fit what your looking for, but...

I have a Colt 6933 11.5" bbl w/ AAC M4-2K silencer - this package is nice and light.

I did a heck of a hike in the mountains the other day and the rifle was a problem.

Maybe you could find a light wt AR to fit your needs.

Plus, I can take out jack rabbits and coyotes at 50 - 100 yards with no problems...

Disclaimer - YMMV, only where legal, and yad, yad, yad…

Re: pack rifles?

Hey Just my 2 cents but I own a H&R survivor in 308 and I must say nice rifle. I paid like 250 for it in september of this year and put like 100 rounds through it and its doing well. Accuracy is ok, its no match gun but look at the price and for that 250 bucks you get a 22 inch bull barel, Anyway I get around 1 inch at a 100 yards (3 shots center to center). Most people (LIKE ME) spend a ton on a basic medium range rifle and it shoots way better than anything I am capable of. All in all good gun for the money, just dont expect sub moa out of it and remember its a 250 dollor gun. One more thing, if you order it from H&R have them do a trigger job, I think its like 35 bucks (free if you have them fit a new barrel) and it takes it down to I think 3.5 lbs. I think it comes with like 5 lbs and thats just pull pull pull pull shoot, so a lighter triger is a must and 3.5 is not that light.

Re: pack rifles?

I used to carry a Charter Arms AR-7 22LR. The sites are kind of crude. But I did OK out to 40 yards or so.

I have no idea if you can still find one. But my older brother had a Savage over & under 223 over 20 gauge. It broke down like a single shot shotgun. I don't remember how he took it apart. But he did carry it in a backpack before.

Re: pack rifles?

for my kidos i had a H&R superlight cut to 16 and they make AR15 style stock that is col. to fit the different lenghts of pull from 5 yrs to 10 yr old. but when it is slid up on the butt and the 16 in barrel it is a very short and handy. in 223 is what i choose for them.will drop in a medium size backpack.
