I picked up a bare bones weatherby mark v synthetic in 300 win mag for $575 I was thinking about making it into a long range hunting rifle what all should I put on it? I was thinking a new stock with glass bedding and flute the barrel and the bolt and top it off with a nice Night force scope, Would that be a nice long range hunting rifle?

To do do all that it would be cheaper to sell it and just buy an Accumark. Mark 5's make great long range rifles. If putting a rail on it be sure to get one specifically made for the Mark 5. Night Force does not make one for it and though the Remington ones will have the holes in the right places the elevations are incorrect and will put a bunch of torque on your scope tube. Near is the best I have found.

Re: Picked up a Weatherby Mark V

I recently did some work on a very similar rifle for another shooter and when finished it was a solid .5 moa gun.

Timney makes a decent replacement trigger and we skim bedded over the molded-in chassis in the stock to fix up the bedding issues. We added a brake because the recoil was too much for him to shoot well and it did make it significantly easier to shoot.

If you like the way a Wby action works, it should be fine.

+1 on the timney.

See if PT&G makes a lightened firing pin. Get a wolff spring from Brownells if they sell it if not look on Tubb's web site. Tubb's, in the past, sold the lightened fp but they discontinued it but he does sell the stiffer spring. This will decrease your lock time by 1/3 if you do both the FP & Spring.

Glass bedding for sure.

If it doesn't shoot fairly tight, get a new barrel put on if the one you have is a factory.

How far you want to go with it depends on your pocket book.

Re: Picked up a Weatherby Mark V

The appeal of the Weatherby to me is it's loaded with the best parts right out of the box. No need for a trigger unless you desire under 6 ounces. The lock time not an issue. I have a couple guns with no mods other than bedding that shoot sub 1/2 MOA and one 257 that is a 1/4 MOA 5 shots at a time. I can shoot aspirin at 100 yards with that one.
