Pipe tobacco

Re: Pipe tobacco

I find the China Black series by Three Star to be pretty smokeable for a mass-produced 'baccy. The Whiskey is my fave, but the Vanilla Burley gets pretty good reviews. When I'm in the mood for some fine leaf, I enjoy several of the Dunhills, the Royal Yacht being my first choice.

I don't claim to have refined taste in pipe tobaccos, but I know what I like and I know what my family enjoys smelling.

Me either, but when I smoked a pipe, I'd buy a big can of Walter Raleigh and pour a jigger of brandy or cognac in it and let it sit until it was completely infused. Cheap and tasted better than a lot of that expensive imported crap.

Re: Pipe tobacco

Your best bet to finding stuff to try will be at your local shop. Ask the guy who owns it. He will/should ask you what you like about the leaf, and what your family likes, and he should be able to guide you to what you are looking for with solid accuracy.
Me, I would give you tons of advice after a lot of questions on cigars, but for my pipe leaf when I used it, I enjoyed whatever the guy handed me in the shop. The rum ones were quite good, the whiskey ones fine, and every once in a while he would throw me something different that was just as good. Of course when I was supposed to quit the Camel's per Panty 6's old regs, I would sneak a bit of Bugler into my little meershaum hawk's claw

Find a pipe shop that blends its own, and stay away from flavorings.

If you find you just can't resist mail order, then http://www.iwanries.com/

Re: Pipe tobacco

Start with Dunhill's Early Morning Pipe and, if you like that, go through the Dunhill range. EMP and My Mixture 965 are superb archetypal classic blends that never get old. If you ever get up my way, I have a well-stocked humidor and sampling is obligatory.

Also try Rattray's Red Rapparee (reminiscent of a fine cigar) and Escudo Navy DeLuxe (big nicotine kick, spicy, and tongue bite, go slow). If you happen upon a tin or pouch of The Balkan Sobranie 759, buy it and send it straight to me. For more reviews, see www.tobaccoreviews.com

Iwan Ries is an excellent shop I visit every time I'm in Chicago, but for mail order I prefer www.jrcigars.com
