Planning a rifle assembly, appreciate thoughts

I am planning on putting together a 308 rifle and would appreciate input from those with more experience than I.

<span style="text-decoration: underline">Use:</span>
Recreational shooting and deer hunting.
The longest range at my club (10mins away) is 200yd but I know there are longer ranges around and some friends have land they shoot on.
Deer season only lasts two weeks here so more recreational shooting than hunting.

<span style="text-decoration: underline">What I would like:</span>
~20" heavier than "sporter" barrel
Threaded muzzle
DBM

My initial plan was this:
Savage hog hunter 308 (threaded, shorter barrel), place it in a B&C stock and a CDI DBM.

But I've been really looking at the Mcree chassis. With the chassis, that takes care of the stock and DBM retrofit all in one...for a few dollars less I think. Just don't know what one to get (carbine or long) length.

Optic will most likely be the Vortex Viper "midway special".

Likely a EGW mount and haven't looked at rings yet.

Cost is a bit of a factor so here are some numbers, if they are off please correct:

Savage hog hunter ~$450
B&C stock ~$225
CDI DBM ~$200 (without mag)
Inlet stock for DBM $60 at CDI
Mcree chassis ~$390

Also looked at the Rem 700 AAC model but it's around $250 more.

For the uses you have in mind, your planned build will be more than enough.

I've always thought the Savage was ugly with that barrel nut and the lack of any contour on the back of the action, but there's no doubt that thay can shoot good and are durable. The whole stagger feed, center feed, different bolt spacing depending on which day of the week it was made kind kept me afraid to try one.

My favorite Action for custom builds is the Weatherby Vanguard / Howa 1500. Flat bottom action, big fat integral recoil lug, smooth bolt and raceway, m16 extractor, big metric threads that are perfect for my metric lathe and the availability of stocks, triggers etc are pretty good too.

If you know a good smith, I hear the Savage barrel nut can be done away with. A Savage centerfeed with a CDI bottom and AICS mags and an Obermeyer 5r would probably be an impressive shooter.

Check out the Savage 10 FCP-SR. It comes with a 20moa mount, bottom metal that accepts AI mags, and has a threaded heavy fluted barrel. Measures .800 at the muzzle for reference. It shoots extremely well and I have nothing but positive stuff to say so far.

I picked one up recently for about $950, but I imagine you can shop around and find one cheaper. Here is a pic of mine. Vortex Viper PST mounted on top of Seekins Precision rings...

Check out Seekins Precision rings. Also worth noting, the Vortex scope rings are made by Seekins.

5R rifling as well I believe. That is one sweet rifle for under $1K!!!!

I was looking at that model last night on Davidsons or somewhere. The problem seems to be finding anything in stock.

The barrel on that model is slightly longer than I wanted but I could probably live with it. Plus it has all of the features I want for about the same money.

I don't understand why you listed the B&C stock with CDI bottom metal and a Mcree chassis. You would go with one or the other. I don't believe you can get a Mcree for less than $600. If you have a link for one for <$400 please share.

You'll need an AICS mag to go with the bottom metal, which is another $65. Accurate mag sells them too, but you need to give them a call to place an order. Also, CDI is a good company, but if cost is a real concern, check out atlasworx DBM too; I believe it takes AICS mags, but I don't believe it's American made.

I listed the B&C stock, CDI parts and Mcree to list the price. I understand you don't use all 3 components together.

On Mcrees site there is a chassis for ~$400. I think it was called the fixed carbine version. Is that not all of the parts? I know I would need a AR stock and mags but that is all correct?

Hunting: Savage Hog Hunter and call it a day.

Dual purpose.

Recreational shooting 98%
Hunting 2%

This year I "hunted" exactly 3 days of the two week deer season. Due to work schedules and other commitments I have more time to drive to the range and plink than I do to dedicate to a set hunting season. Plus, I am not super deer slayer hunter guy who crawls mountains in search of the great four legged creature. I'm way more relaxed about it and use the time to get away from work and the household stuff.

Essentially all I'm looking to create is a fairly accurate rifle I can take to the range and have fun with but also can hunt with on a limited schedule.

Just to update, I ended up finding a Rem 700 AAC-SD in a local shop last weekend.

My sweet Wife bought me a set of rings and a base for my Birthday.

Being that I over spent on my initial rifle cost the assembly is going to drag out another month or two.

I have enough left in the budget for a ~$500 scope.

Looking at the Vortex Viper 5-15 from Midway or the Vortex 6.5-20x44 Viper.

The Mcree chassis will have to wait a couple months.

This guy gets it
