As mentioned above, this was hands down the best match I've ever been in. Loved the lay of land, all the scenerio based stages, and the experts knowledge, and I got to shoot a full auto, which I had never done, but thumbs up for me on everything. I will be returning, so keep me posted when that will be.

My advise about the match, is change nothing. Thanks to all the sponsors, and everyone that had a part in making this the best match ever.

Probably one of the best run and most thought out matches I've shot period. Anyone who can should try to shoot a Match put on by the PMG folks.

Short AAR based on how my Partner and I shot.

My names for the stages are not what the PMG folks called them

Stage 1 for us was the Hop and a Skip. One partner started out on the M60 Prop Gun(

) and the other started out on the line. You would then move as your partner fired a shot on his station and leap frog him to the next station. Target arrays would be 1 target, 2 targets, 2 targets if I remember correctly. Each target would need to be engaged twice to neutralize. Total shots per person was 10 with a max score of 20. We scored a 14. What I liked was the targets were colored with the barrier/station you were shooting off of was also colored the same as the targets, so you couldn't make a mistake on what to shoot.

Max range was 330m I think?

Stage 2 Counter Sniper(only stage my partner and I screwed the duck on). You had 4 targets( 1pt a piece) to engage starting out at around 420m ranging up to 460m(?) Once those had been neutralized you could engage the Sniper target which was a 3 pt target. There was one bonus target which was tannerite at about 100m or so. Was worth 1 pt. You have a max of 8 rounds divided between you and your partner anyway you wanted to shoot it.

You could use a range finder on this stage.

My partner and I broke a cardinal rule on this stage and only picked up 2 or 3 points because we rushed out selfs. You have 3 or 4 mins to shoot the stage....and we pooched it in about a min.

Stage 3 was a mil'ing stage. You had 13 targets to mil in 10 mins, scores must be written down on a sheet in order to be counted. I believe this bit a lot of people in the ass. We got all but 3 down on paper. You also had to be within 10%(?) error in order to gain pts on correct targets. Not sure on the score we got on this one. I believe we got 4 targets correct.

Stage 4 was actually shooting the mil'ing stage. You were provided the exact ranges and target designations so let the RO know what you were shooting at. Targets were colored Black, Orange, and White based on distance and size, and ranged in value from 1-2-3 pts. Max range was a plate at 880y I believe. Wind was a major factor. You had in essence to valley's you were shooting into and the wind was completely opposite in both. You have a max of 16 rounds, again divided up between you and your partner.

My partner and I cleaned up on this stage, he went first with me spotting for him. He cleaned up all the easy targets and the targets in the right valley. Leaving me with the smaller ones at farther ranges on the left valley. We finished this stage with 11 targets hit, only ones left were two white diamonds(?) at 2 pts a piece.

Stage 5 the Don't shoot me I'm a hostage stage. Basically you had to neutralize 4 Tango's where were IPSC targets via A or B zone head hits. A hits were worth 6 pts, and B hits were worth 3 pts. You had unlimited amount of rounds but there was a kicker.

You have 4 mins to get into prone position and talk out with your partner how to engage the targets in the school bus. You were 130 yards away, with hostages in front of all of the T's and in some cases hostages behind the Ts as well. So that each Sniper only had 2 safe shots or else you'd put a bullet through the T's face directly into the head of a hostage behind him. You and your partner were also seperated by 20 feet in the barn to get the angles proper.

Shooter 1 could only engage T 1 and 3 safely, and Shooter 2 could only engage T 2 and 4 safely. At the end of the 4 mins the RO would say he has control and beging a 5 sec count down. At the spoken word of one, you had 8 secs to engage all 4 targets with A or B zone head hits. If you hit a hostage you took a 0 for the stage.

My partner and I managed 2 As and 2 Bs for the score on this stage.

We ended up 3rd place over all, with 4th place being 1 pt behind us, and 2nd only 5 pts ahead of us.

Guys I can't help but say how fun and great learning exp this match was. The stages were well setup and thought out. Nothing was stupidly difficult to hit,and was fair for both advanced shooters and new comers alike.

Its is my opinion you are going to see a lot of sought after matches from these guys in the future and I hope to god I can shoot every one of this in the future.

It was an honor to get to shoot this match. Excellent classes the day before as well. Take what I say knowing I am a noobie. This class and match were run with as much attention to detail on safety and learning as possible. Both days were broke up perfect. The classes were ran perfect.

I had a totally awesome time at the event.


Many thanks to the property owner for making this possible. I went out to dinner with him Friday night, and he invited me back to his place afterwards for fellowship. We sat outside, drank lemonade, and talked until 10pm. He's an extremely gracious host.

He and I spoke about long range shooting for a while, and I mentioned a book for him. For the life of me I couldn't remember the name of the author that night, though. Told him I'd tell you. So, tell Mike - Applied Ballistics for Long Range Shooting by Bryan Litz. It's as complicated as he needs to get.


Really great event guys. What I think set it apart from everything else was that it wasn't a match where you could just slap the trigger and do well. You had to plan your shots. You had to plan with your partner. You had to plan shots as an individual shooter. You had to make decisions on target engagement with scarce resources - both time and an ammo limit.

That took a lot of experience to plan out something that smart.


Glad I shot it. And besides, someone had to represent Pennsylvania down there.

Before we go into the AAR I would like to thank the competitors for displaying solid sportsmanship; showing other competitors respect, safe gun handling, respecting and preserving our right to enjoy shooting on Mike Luke’s Beautiful piece of land.

Our match concept was have the competitors get exposed to stuff that they normally do not see in matches or are able to do at their home range. We still wanted to test some core skills that precision riflemen should posses, which were reflected in Know your limits and counter sniper stages. PMG matches will have stages like know your limits, Counter Sniper and unknown distance in order to test core shooter competencies while incorporating some relevant, interesting, challenging stages that expose the shooter to something new.

PMG match concepts are to attempt stage set up that will have the winning team hit about 70-80% of targets and the average team score close to 50%. Additionally we wanted the last place team to still hit quite a few targets, but it is very difficult to control who is going to show up skill and training level etc. Additionally we wanted to have a few stage weighted to reflect what we thought were important skills precision riflemen should posses. Know your limits as a stage was worth 41 points, but included range estimation as a separate scored stage. The Bus stage was worth 24 points, but if one of the riflemen engaged a hostage the stage was worth zero points, which accurately reflects a total mission failure for shooting a noncombatant. Six teams out of twenty unfortunately received a zero on this stage reducing our average team score to below 50%.

We conducted a stage by stage open format AAR with the competitors after the match capturing the information in order to improve PMG’s ability to run a fun and challenging match.

The addition of an M-60 machine gun in a run and gun format with precision rifle was enjoyable and something that most competitors do not get a chance to do very often.
The ability to shoot into and through a school bus during a high stress, low round count, high value stage was “awesome”.
PMGs customer service, attitude towards the match and participants was excellent.
<span style="font-weight: bold">Improves:</span>
Better stage briefings.
We will improve and proof our stage briefs.
We want the stage briefings to be lose enough to allow for some gaming, because that will give us an opportunity to learn from the competitors.
More Targets higher round count.
We are going to run a two day event that will provide for more targets and a higher round count. Unfortunately more targets and higher round count usually requires more time to shoot. We could probably have squeezed more targets into the Escape stage, Bus Stage and counter sniper stage while keeping the time limit the same. If we would have put more targets into the Bus stage more teams would have shot a hostage especially if the extra target was a mover so, be careful for what you ask for.

The next match will have a similar formula with some standard core stages that test the basics with progressively smaller targets that are worth more points and we are working on setting up additional stages that will present an opportunity to shoot stuff that you may not get anywhere else.

We are not going to base our matches off of statistics. Smiling faces and high fives are what we are looking for and we respect and value shooter input so, please take a few minutes to think about these questions and feel free to respond.

Did you guys like the scoring of know your limits where the > 2 moa targets where worth 1 point, 1-2 moa targets where worth 2 points and < 1 moa targets where worth 4 points?

Should we have made the 320M target on Escape from encirclement worth more points?

Does a high round count and hit percentage = fun?

Here is my AAR on the PMG spring 2011 precision rifle match held in Cookeville TN.


First of all I would like to thank the land owner Mike for allowing a bunch of heathen with rifles onto his property to make noise, stir up dust and generally cause hate and discontent to the surrounding areas. You could search this great country over and not find a nicer more gracious man than him….a profound THANK YOU SIR to him!

Next we have the lovely young ladies who cooked some of the best burgers you could ever taste for us sweaty pigs and even catered to us in the field Friday during the class….thanks ladies!


Last but not least for the thanks, the RO’s/Directors, they worked their tails off to ensure we had a very SAFE and FUN time while there, their professionalism and willingness to help the novice shooters and veterans alike was a very refreshing sight to see….many thanks to them for their hard work dedication and sacrifice in the time leading up to the match, it truly showed in how smooth and tight the match was….thanks guys!


Now to the action, myself and my partner were on Bravo squad which went to the Know Your Limits stage which was actually 2 stages in 1. Part 1 was a timed milling exercise in which there were 14 targets at various ranges, the teams were all brought up to the line and given 10 minutes to mill and record their answers on a sheet given to them, after the 10 minutes the answer sheets were collected, the RO the proceeded to give the correct yardage to the squad, this was done to insure those who may not have known how to estimate range had the opportunity to engage and record hits on the targets ( a very well thought out and nice thing to do) after that the teams were sent back to staging and called up one by one. Part 2 once on the line each team was given 8 minutes to engage targets at their discretion, total round count was 16…..8 per shooter, now that seems like an eternity to shoot 16 rounds but I can tell you it was tricky, the targets were just beyond 200 for the closest to 851 for the farthest….the farthest 2 targets looked to be about 20 yards apart, in actuality they were 666 yards and 851 with the distance between then a valley you could not see….tricky to say the least.


Stage 3 was the bus/hostage stage, this was a law enforcement sniper stage, the sniper team was deployed into the loft of a barn and had to engage 4 tangos holding a busload of children hostage from a distance of 130 yards in 8 seconds with the first shots coming via C.I.A countdown….gravy right?.....WRONG!....all shots had to be headshots on the standard A and B scoring on pistol targets, with 4 hostages in front of the tangos…..and more BEHIND them, I saw lots of zeros for that stage…a lot of parents will be wondering why little Timmy took a Matchking to the neck on this one….LOL


Stage 4, breaking out of encirclement, here the team started with shooter #2 behind a M-60 and shooter one at the ready, at the command shooter 2 let loose a volley with the pig and shooter 1 moved quickly to the first barricade and engaged the first target, each target had to be engaged twice by both shooters to be neutralized, at shooter 1’s command or at his first shot shooter 2 left the 60 and proceeded to the second barricade and engaged, this set off the leapfrogging by both members until all firing was complete, round count was 10 per shooter….very fun stage……very fun…unless you’re fat like me!



Last stage was the countersniper stage….here you were tasked with engaging a enemy sniper and his security forces, the security forces had to be neutralized before you could engage the sniper ranges were 380ish if I remember correctly out to 530ish, 4 security and 1 sniper, if all were hit and you had rounds left there was a bonus target of tannerite at 150ish yards…round count was 8 total, now here it was up to the teams as to how they engaged, both could shoot or one shooter and one spotting, I can’t remember time limit but it was plenty if you worked good as a team…..great stage to end a phenomenal match!

Total round count for me was 28 for the day……that’s right 28! But I tell you, you would have thought you fired a whole lot more by the time it was over…I have fired over 100 rounds in matches before and not even come within the same zipcode for fun and enjoyment, that is just a testament to how this was setup and run.

In closing I would like to thank all those mentioned before again and a thank you to all the competitors for being super safe and for being a super group of professionals all weekend long…thanks guys!

Just got rested up from the match this weekend, and thought I'd take some time to post up a quick AAR from a new competitors perspective.

First off, thanks for the opportunity to compete in a location as great as the land the match was held on, and thanks to the RO's for the atmosphere at the match.

Friday Class: I don't have a lot to say about the class, but it was a great prep for saturday's match. Lots of topics covered in a classroom type setting supplemented by live fire training. After the class, I told my partner it was almost unfair for the guys in the class because of how well the info was covered and how beneficial it was to me in the match.

I was in sqaud B with a great group of competitors who were more than willing to help me out and were great to chat with in the down time.

Anyway,

Stage 1- Know your limits- As previously mentioned the first part was milling the targets. Ten minutes sounded like plenty of time to me, but it seemed the time flew by. My partner and I were unable to get any distances onto paper for score but had the targets milled and some ranges recorded on our scratch paper, like I said time flew for us. After that the ranges were given which was a great help for us. Next up was actually shooting the stage. I can't say enough how important it was to plan your approach to a stage. My team went out and tried to shoot every target in order and now I see that wasn't the best approach. Hit the ones you are confident in and clean up later is how I would have done it looking back.

We then moved to the hostage stage. Extremely fun stage. Took lots of planning between shooters to co-ordinate who took which targets because the stage was designed with "one right answer". Communication was key.

After a lunch break we moved to the escape stage where you had to effectively move and engage targets from roughly 100yds to about 325yds from different barricades. This was a lot of fun and showed me I need to practice shooting from alternate positions and barricades.

Last up was the counter sniper stage which was by far my favorite stage. I believe 4 sniper protection targets and 1 sniper, you had 8 rounds and plenty of time. We had a little mishap with the laser range finder, but after milling the first target I was able to make the hits required on the protection targets.

My team didn't take home any trophies, but the amount of knowledge I took home was more than enough. Scott, Ryan, and Tom all offered helpful info after we finished the stage that will be very beneficial when I get more time to practice. To me this match was not focused on shooting, you had to have solid teamwork and communication. I believe everyone out there could have hits almost every target on a regular "range day" I was lucky enough to have Cruze5 from here as a partner, but being our first weekend shooting together was an added hurdle to jump. I believe we were able to start working together effectively in the class and that continued into saturday, but having a solid partner was a key to the match.

I am already looking forward to the next opportunity to shoot with the PMG crew.

The addition of an M-60 machine gun in a run and gun format with precision rifle was enjoyable and something that most competitors do not get a chance to do very often.
The ability to shoot into and through a school bus during a high stress, low round count, high value stage was “awesome”.
PMGs customer service, attitude towards the match and participants was excellent.
<span style="font-weight: bold">Improves:</span>
<span style="text-decoration: underline">Better stage briefings.</span>
<span style="color: #FF0000">I am not sure why some people thought this needed to be improved. I thought the briefings were quite good. You guys gave us time to take notes, you answered our questions [which is different then I have experienced at other matches], you either gave us stage diagrams or gave us plenty of time to look at a diagram, like at the bus stage. Also, after each stage briefing you gave our entire squad sufficient time to think things through and get mentally prepared/ready which avoided disadvantaging the first few shooters at each stage. Its important to keep us guessing a bit, if you tell us everything in the briefing it removes an element of tension/anticipation which made it better. </span>
We will improve and proof our stage briefs.
We want the stage briefings to be lose enough to allow for some gaming, because that will give us an opportunity to learn from the competitors.
More Targets higher round count.
<span style="color: #FF0000"> A two day event would be great. I would like to see more stages & would be happy to stay the extra night at a hotel/pay an increased match fee, etc.. A pure UKD stage would be great. At the same time, the way you ran the stage in this match was very good too as it made milling accurately a tested skill by itself. I don't think we need higher round counts per stage. I liked the way you limited time & round counts so we were challenged to hit each target with one round and then move on to the next, etc and if we were lucky, maybe, we had a chance to go back to the one's that got away. Time pressure, low limited round count, some smaller targets [ie: targets of differing sizes and point value], requiring teamwork analysis & planning are, for me and my partner, what made the match challenging & fun. </span>

We are going to run a two day event that will provide for more targets and a higher round count. Unfortunately more targets and higher round count usually requires more time to shoot. We could probably have squeezed more targets into the Escape stage, Bus Stage and counter sniper stage while keeping the time limit the same. If we would have put more targets into the Bus stage more teams would have shot a hostage especially if the extra target was a mover so, be careful for what you ask for.

The next match will have a similar formula with some standard core stages that test the basics with progressively smaller targets that are worth more points and we are working on setting up additional stages that will present an opportunity to shoot stuff that you may not get anywhere else.

We are not going to base our matches off of statistics. Smiling faces and high fives are what we are looking for and we respect and value shooter input so, please take a few minutes to think about these questions and feel free to respond.

Did you guys like the scoring of know your limits where the > 2 moa targets where worth 1 point, 1-2 moa targets where worth 2 points and < 1 moa targets where worth 4 points?

Does a high round count and hit percentage = fun?

<span style="color: #FF0000"> I guess I disagree with some of the participants on the high round count issue. For me, the match was not about sending lots of lead/rounds down range [in my humble opinion that is for a range practice day]. For my team it was about trying to rapidly & successfully engage each target with one hit as quickly as we could shoot precisely [and if we missed on to the next one] as realistically the bad guy probably wouldn't have stayed put for me to try again.

A high hit % definitely makes it fun. </span>

What did you think of customer service and match atmosphere?

I could find the targets. Hard to shoot them if you cant find them. Other people agreed with me. Good guys to shoot with. I made a mistake with the school bus which cost me a bunch of points. I like having to think it through. I didnt think that one through and it cost me the whole stage. Fair enough everyone had the same rules. I like having a team. We picked each other up a couple of times. A few more rounds in partner format. On "know your limits" I probably could have made a few more hits after we desided he"wasnt feeling it" for that stage but I ran out of round count. Then we made the descision for me not to shoot at all on the tannerite stage and he cleaned it. This was a the good thing about the team. Some give and take and some descision making made all the stages quite cleanable but damn sure not easy. I appreciated the instructors taking a minute and talking to me about some things I could do to do it better. I just flat out like to compete. And of course win. I am a whole lot closer to winning a match someday than I was before the weekend.

Todd that is exactly what we were going for. We wanted to present a competitive environment while still allowing shooters to learn and understand how to improve.

It does shooters no good to come out and miss and not understand why they missed.

I cant express how happy I am to hear that.

Great event I learned a lot from everyone. Saw some very interesting rifles and calibers. Really enjoyed talking to the instructors, great bunch of guys. I found I have a lot to learn.

First I would like to say one thing I took from this weekend was, WOW! This was IMHO a great start to something huge!

I would like to thank Tom, Ryan, Scott, and a BIG thanks to Mike!!
The sponsors were awesome....without them this sport would die!

First thing I learned was I have alot to learn . And let me say this format was an excellent platform for doing just that. The stages were challenging and things I had not done before and being able to say afterwards "Where did I go wrong what should I have done to improve" and getting an honest answer was in mind what absolutely set this match apart and is one of the main reason I WILL return. Were there things that weren't perfect, absolutely but at the end of the day, WE were asked how THEY did!

GREAT FIRST match gentlemen..........
