Re: post your hunting rifle

Some of these have changed stocks, but the basics are the same.

Seem to grab this one, rather frequently....

1:9.5, 20" 243AI, 700LH, Cerkote, McM. Had Talley's and a 2X7 VX1/turrets for a while but now wears a 20 MOA rail, XTR's, and a VX2 3X9 with M1's. Standard meat hunting fare is the 85 TSX, and varmits get the 87 Vmax, both out of Lapua hulls with H414.

Thats a "My dog can lick your dog" statement.
No way to prove it unless you kept a log on the old rifle.
Guessing is great but there is always someone out there that can blow your mind.
Who owns one of Teddy Rosevelt's guns? He hunted for the Smithsonian exibits and every chance he got.
Just a thought.
For your sake, I hope your right but have fun either way.

Nice kills but I have a question.
Does your state allow turkey to be taken with modern rifle?
Kentucky does not but just curious if other states allow that.

Sorry, didn't mean for it to sound like a dick measuring deal. The gun has had an interesting/bloody history in Yellowstone, I have no logbook just stories from a long dead old man. I would have to guess that I have only killed 20-30 animals with it in the last 20 years.

Re: post your hunting rifle

I've shot 3 .30-'06's during deer season sight-in this year, my Win 70, a Ruger 77 MkI, and a Rem 770. They all performed exactly the same, very acceptably. My Ruger 77 MkI .280 is simply flat and accurate, with a side helping of awesome.

I know there are a lot of folks who take understandable pride in exquisite implements, but let's be practical.

The important stuff is happening between the ears, all the rest is just tools. I select tools that will take a beatin' and keep on tickin'.

If they fit and they fire to the same place, and don't inconvenience me somehow, everything else is just eye candy. Some budgets suit such indulgences, mine doesn't.

If that was true the Marine Corps. would be buying their guns and ammo at WalMart.

I can really relate to this

I see some very nice gear on this forum, stuff I would like to have but will never be able to afford. I really appreciate being able to squeeze every drop of accuracy and reliability out of a $500 rifle. Even the $500 for me is crazy expensive right now.

Yep, any modern firearm, unless local restriction restricts it.

I don't live in Kentucky.......

You might wanna research that before making such a broad statement.

Maybe you have a local ordinance, or something.....

Legal Use of Firearms and Archery Equipment
Valid Concealed Handgun Permit Holders May:
•Possess a concealed handgun during archery seasons, muzzleloader seasons, and general firearms seasons in counties where rifles are prohibited.
See Local Firearms Ordinances for details.
•Rifles (including air rifles), pistols, and revolvers may be used for hunting turkeys, except where prohibited by local ordinances.

The question was whether or not the state allows the use of modern rifles on turkeys, not what some local ordnances might be. Virginia allows everything, including air rifles for fall turkey.

I know exactly what the question was, the only problem was that your answer was not accurate.....

You made that erroneous statement, now show me in the Rules where Rifles are not allowed for Spring Gobbler here in VA.

My county allows Rifles spring, and fall.....

Legal Methods and Restrictions for Spring Turkey Season and Youth Spring Turkey Hunt Day

Special restrictions apply to specific firearms use during this season. See Legal Use of Firearms and Archery Equipment and Local Firearms Ordinances for details.

Modern firearms
Archery tackle (including crossbows)
Muzzleloading firearms
Decoys and blinds may be used
Unlawful to use electronic calls
Unlawful to use dogs during spring turkey season
When using a shotgun it is unlawful to use or have in possession any shot larger than number 2 fine shot during spring turkey season.

Re: post your hunting rifle

Being that its the only rifle I have I consider it practical. I compete and hunt with it. It allows me to be very familiar with my shooting system. I get that its a little extravagent but It gets used, its not a safe queen.

Re: post your hunting rifle

9fingers- what stock is that?

mulehunter-check pm

im trying to decide between a t2 and t3 for a hunting/target rifle. i feel like a t3 would be a little more hunting friendly but i like the tactical look of a t2. anybody got suggestions?

not to get the thread sidetracked, but thought id still ask

Re: post your hunting rifle

My hunting rifles are absolutely typical, nothing special about them at all.

For 'Chucks, an M700 BDL Varmint (it's old) .222 Rem, and an M700 VLS .223.

For larger game, a Ruger 77MKI .280, a Ruger 77MKI .30-'06, a Win M70 .30-'06, and a Win M94AE .44 Mag. Not sure about hunting, but there's also a Ruger M77MKI Varmint weight .280.

I also have a Cabelas/Traditions Shenandoah .50cal sidelock percussion rifle, a Mossberg 20ga rifled bolt gun, and a Charles Daly Semi 20ga with a rifled choke.

These guns all shoot well and deliver the goods reliably.

Re: post your hunting rifle

One trick I did last year was to do camo without using paint.

I covered all the stock furniture with blue masking tape, then covered the masking tape with camo duck tape.

Instant camo, easily removed. I tried peeling some back this Sunday, it came loose easy, then stuck back down; so it appears to remain removeable for at least a year.

Would love to see pics of this

Re: post your hunting rifle

I don't do pics, ask anybody...

I just lay the tape on lengthwise, no effort to match patterns. The edges are trimmed even with the stock outlines using an X-Acto #11 blade.

I did the process on a Mossberg 20ga rifled bolt gun, a Winchester 94AE .44 mag, and a Remington 870 12ga.

Since I did mine, Marpat-like duck tape has become available. Were I to do it over I would now just buy the Remington RealTree tape, which is peelable vinyl.

Just do it.

Greg
