Power On-Off with Leica 2000b (1600, 2700) Rangefinder

So I'm the happy owner of a new Leica 2000b... and I've actually read the instruction book and searched online, sat through several YouTube reviews, etc. and nobody addresses how you turn the thing off. I've had it sitting still for a couple of hours and can pick it up and it still ranges. Does it ever "turn off" or is it always on, once the button is pushed?

If it is the always-on type then I'll need to pull the battery when traveling lest the button get pushed in a pack, etc. and drain the battery.

My 1600B stays on for a few seconds and then turns off automatically. Pressing the button again wakes it up, and keeping the button depressed kicks it into continuous scan mode. However, the reality is you really have to consciously work to keep the button pressed continuously and so far I have not had any issues with discharging the battery due to it being activated while in the case. I suppose it could happen, but I don't think it is very likely yo occur.

The units themselves don't have a dedicated on/off button, so pulling the battery would be a solution which i'm not sure is worth the hassle. If it were me, I'd just keep an extra battery around for peace of mind.

I would keep an extra battery as Pell said, but yeah, it apparently does not use any power unless the buttons are pushed, as battery life is measured in numbers of actuations.

So a better way to look at it....it's always off, until you push the button. Then it automatically turns itself back off if you do not push the buttons again within a short time period. Kinda like an instant on flashlight...

Otherwise happy with it even if I won't use the ballistics program. It's basically a 7x scope, looking through is as good as anything else I've owned.

Noted that the temperature recording is always going to be wacky until it reaches ambient temperature and I think even being in my pocket is going to warm it up.

Definitely on the temperature. Holding it in your hand will heat it up, as well laying it in the sun etc. Best thing to do is keep it in it's case and don't sit around holding it. Which, for me is problematic because, as you mentioned...the glass is fantastic so I use it as a 7 power monocular.

FYI, my Kestrel is the same. Instructions tell you to take it out, swing it around on the lanyard to 'clear the sensor', then turn off environment update because if you do not, the heat of the sun etc. will cause it to get hotter than it really is.

I have tested this, and it's true in both the case of the Leica and the Kestrel. Most of the time, it does not really matter too much, but when stretching the distance, it does start to matter in my limited experience.

If it is not turning off or going in standby mode then I would send it back, You can't go pulling batteries out in the bush when the rain is going sideways, You need to talk to the suppliers or the importers,

When it's been sitting still and you pick it up, without hitting the button, is the aiming reticle illuminated? If it is, something is wrong. I actually switched to the Leica after the Sig I had got stuck on, and then eventually stopped ranging all together.

But the normal operation is it goes into standby, but you can pick it up, hit the button once, the reticle appears, then you hit the button again to range. If you don't hit the button again in 10 seconds or so, the reticle should disappear.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, I had one that had a Brain Fart and would not turn on as well, so I sent it back and got my money back.

Mine shuts off within a few seconds after ranging. If yours is staying illuminated without touching the buttons I'd send it back.

Thanks I simply did not realize that it was "off" when the LED went off. I'd prefer a true power-off switch or at least a mention of this in the instructions.

So this thing stays in it's pouch lest something presses on the button.

I don't have the manual with me now but I'm pretty sure it does mention the auto shutoff.

I've got my manual out in my car but if I remember correctly it says that it will automatically shutoff after a few seconds after taking a reading but I could be thinking of something else too.

Can some one please tell me if the 2700 will one give LOS and Degrees "Only" without using the rest of the info or without loading any ballistics etc ?
