Projectile Identification...

Hello everyone. I've posted this in the reloading section also but haven't gotten many bites. I'm trying to help my bestfriend's son ID this round.

Today at the range he found a projectile lying next to the berm. It was not deformed but it was rusted. I lightly sanded the rust off and then hand polished it a bit. The bullet is a boattail and seems to be solid steel. Without a mic handy, I used a ruler and got the approximate dimensions; 11.1125mm x 46.0375mm (7/16" x 1 13/16"). I was thinking AP of some sort but there doesn't appear to be a jacket on it.

I would like to see the ruler you used to get thoses approximate dimensions; 11.1125mm x 46.0375mm .

The more I think about it, would there really be a need to boat tail the core of a AP round?

Yes. It's a hardened steel AP core from a US .50 cal round.

Here's one I found in a rock-face after shooting my .50 at 1000yd.

I've also dug many out of the sand/dirt at closer ranges and they look just like yours but without pitting. I have never seen one deformed, but one slightly chipped at the nose. Tough stuff.
