PRS Practice

Howdy, I am new to PRS and setting up a practice course on my place. I am building a 22LR trainer/comp rifle. My question is what size steel target would be best to use on a 22LR short course 50-180 yards, that would mimic a regular PRS target. Thanks!

Look at the NRL22 courses of fire for the last couple months for a good idea of target sizes and distances, they are publishing a longer course alternative now out to 200y.
For me, I don't have a lot of time to practice, and only occasional dryfire.
So, NRL22 is practice for PRS, and PRS matches are practice for NRL22 matches, it's the muscle memory of building quick positions that matters.
Set up a timer and run the old COFs and you'll be ahead of most in no time. Maybe put up some KYL racks at increasing ranges.

I started in 3-gun but now I'm PRS all the way. I shoot the Texas Precision PRS and 22 LR matches every month in Navasota, as well as the Walker County Benchrest 22 LR match (don't let the term "Benchrest" fool you there, it's a straight 22 LR match and it's really good). I belong to CCC Shooting Complex (http://cccshootingcomplex.com/) which is a fantastic range that has everything you'll need...pistol bays, 100 yard zero ranges (2), PRS out to 1,100 yards and a complete 22 LR course. Not selling here, just saying that in the Houston area, there really is nothing like it.

I have used that KYL rack for a couple of years it is top notch. Easy to set up and transport, and it has held up great

I just competed in my first 2 22 matches this year and have 1 more next week and 2 in august for sure.

First 1 was out too 100 yards, and target sizes were anywhere from .25” to 8” (which was too big). The second match was from 75-350 yards and targets were anywhere from 3”-full ipsic

Thanks for your input. Sounds like challenging fun. Looking forward to getting involved. I’m putting my gear together and would like to get some practical practice in before I jump in. I have a good local club and am going to watch a CF match this Saturday. Thanks for your help!

I’m not trying to instigate or sound pushy, but if you have your rifle put together, take it and shoot. I was so glad I took my rifle to my first comp instead of watching. 99% chance you’ll be surrounded by patient and helpful people. No time like now.

It is a CF match and the only rifles I have are a .308 and a 300WM. part of what Im trying to learn is what caliber the good guys are using. I thinking 6 Dasher right now but don't have much knowledge about that Rd. Just want to spend the money wisely.

Gotcha. I misunderstood. Thought it was a rimfire match. I can’t give a lot of input on a CF caliber, but I would go with 6 something. Seems to be the norm.

Take the 308 and shoot.

Build whatever you want to shoot eventually, but not shooting until your 6 mm whatever is ready is dumb when you have a rifle that will do right now.

You're not going to be competitive to begin with anyway, so caliber is irrelevant at this point.

I made the grip bc the MK11 is so small and didn’t fit good. It’s formed to my hand and has a thumb shelf. Made from epoxy putty. I can give you more details if your interested.

Made a bag rider and cheek riser the same way. Cheap upgrade.

For your .22 steel, to make the training transferrable to centerfire, try to keep most of your targets at or less than 2 MOA at each distance. That way, the observable target size in your reticle will be comparable between .22 and centerfire. For example, at 50 yards leep target size in the .75-1" range. At 100 yards keep target size in the 1.5-2" range, and at 180 yards have targets in the 3.5-4" range (perhaps 6" at first to get used to it. Keep in mind that the farther out you go with .22, the slightly more generous you need to be with target sizes.

I shoot a 26lb 308 out there, I shoot MOA out to 500 maybe just under with my crap loads. I swap to my buddies 13lb 6 creed and the shots I missed before I hit with ease.

As much as I like 6creed I'm thinking about a 6BR for long barrel life myself. Maybe even a GT.

Right. I think I’ll prob upgrade the 308 and work with that for awhile. I need to learn more before spending the bucks on a CF rig.
