Gunsmithing PTG One Piece Bolt for a 700

I like the 11 deg back swept, just personal preference but its easier for me to cycle the bolt. It puts the knob closer to my knuckle and I have more leverage to push up on it. When I'm spending the money on a 1 piece bolt & the rifle the little extra isnt a big deal to me.

Do these have to be "fitted" in any way to the action it's going in? I asked because I've seen it referenced this way in the past. I have a Rem 700 that I bought with a PTG one piece straight handle bolt installed and it honestly feels/functions just as good as some of my custom actions.

Trevor - yes they usually need fitted. They are designed to have a little extra in the right places so you can set head space and still have something to work with for extraction cam.This is especially true on "trued" actions where a few thou. has been machined off the bolt and action lugs.

Thank you for this info.

Noticed you can get either a straight handle or 11 deg back-swept. Any advantage to going either way or is it more to match the cut-out in an existing stock?

I think it boils down to personal preference more than anything. I've used a few of these and fit varies receiver to receiver. The last one I did was for a 300 win mag and the fit was absolutely perfect. The gap between the bolt handle and rear receiver ring was .005" when closed. This afforded the user with 95%+ primary extraction cam contact and fixed a host of other issues he was having. The straight threaded handle on the PTG model moved the bolt knob down slightly more than his original threaded angled handle did giving slightly more clearance between the knob and stock. I had to set headspace with a reamer but all else was a perfect fit.

Another local builder I know used one and he had approx. .020" clearance between the bolt handle and rear receiver ring. In a perfect world this clearance needs to be .005" to .010" max for maximum cam contact on primary extraction. While .020" isn't a deal killer it isn't in the preferred range. Much over .020" and you start to have that dreaded click on bolt lift and less than desirable primary extraction. At the end of the day the receiver is going to be the deciding factor in the final fit and all areas concerned. The one piece PTG bolt body's are as solid as you could ever want and seem to be consistent.

As I often tell people, if starting from scratch go with a custom receiver. The Remington 700's are great receivers if you already have one but, to make it perfect, your going to drop some coin to get there.

Here are the top three I'd recommend and in no certain order;

Defiance Machine Deviant or Rebel LA or SA
Surgeon 591, 1086 & XL (if you can find one)
Stiller Tac 30 / 300
