First off, hello Sniper's Hide.

I am currently setting into motion plans to build a 800m shooting range and CQB training facility in central Nebraska. There I will offer low cost carbine courses as a hobby, but the range will also have "open" days where anyone can shoot for low fees.

I have the opportunity to purchase a slightly larger peice of land that could accomodate a 1000m range, obviously this would raise purchase and construction costs slightly(over the original 800m design).

My questions to the members here is: Are there any members in the area that would care to utilize such a facility? What is the maximum range that you like to train for?

FYI maximum caliber on the range would be 7.62mm

Any other questions/comments/suggestions would be great!

I am not trying to advertise(I know it is against forum rules) but you can veiw the basic design thus far on my website below:

Re: Questions for training facility

I wouldnt consider any type of rifle course with out pits and pull targets.

You have to be able to read the targets to make corrections to start, then move to your steel targets, plus "pits" are handy (safety) for moving target training.

I'm curious though, Seems like with all the training and instructor corses you primary instructor went through, why dosnt he know what he wants for a range.

Thats a lot of schools for a individual with less then 3.5 years, after 1.5 years deployment, (not counting basic and AIT).

Anyway, You may have to re-think your $20K start up. Seems awful low to me.

Re: Questions for training facility

If this isn't a baffled or bermed range your downrange safety fan should look a lot like the ones in DA Pam 385-63 Range Safety(2009) or European ranges since your credentials all seem military derived.

A 5-Meter high berm ain't very high.

You're going to need insurance and some pretty good risk analysis/risk mitigation.

Re: Questions for training facility

I know what I want in a range. I am asking what you would want in a range.

The courses are not geared toward this client base, but that doesnt mean that the facility should be useless to LR shooters.

Target pits are interesting ideas. I'll have to look into it.

The cost is only estimated, but I have a variety of local low cost resources at my disposal(relatives, friends)

As far as safety, the exacts of the backstop and any side berms are TBD based on the surrounding terrain. Yes, DA pubs are being used as a reference, but my primary reference for safety is the NRA Range Source Book, as reccomended by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Yes it is far more schools than your average 5-yearer. For a year after the last deployment we remained at ~35% strength, not enough to do a real training cycle, so most of what we did was train-the-trainer courses. If you doubt my credentials or ability to train riflemen, I can provide references, just PM me.
