Remington 700 M24 vs Sako TRG22? The clone/mil rifle bug bit.

At some point in the near future I want to buy a "real" "semi real" I guess sniper rifle. I was thinking of purchasing one of the Europtic M24 rifles they had Remington do a run on. But at the same time I'm becoming a Sako fan and of course they are used in other countries so I may take it and clone a foreign rifle. and a little less than the m24. Probably should just bite the bullet and build a clone of the m24 but the TRG just looks cool as well.

Rifle would be used at the bench/conversation piece.

IMHO the Rem M24 even in its day was just a so so precision rifle that is outclassed in every measure by the Sako TRG22. And the price these sell for compared to what you could get elsewhere is wildly inflated at $2900.

The TRG 22 is a great rifle and the only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it takes proprietary magazines that are very expensive, I wish you could make them work with AICS mags.

The M24 on the other hand is a long action Rem 700 made for a 308 so that you could convert them to 300 Win Mag, which in practice didn't really work all that well, and to top it off it's in a 1988 vintage H&S precision stock that again, compared to modern stocks is a dinosaur. If that isn't enough for you, it's got a fixed magazine. You've got to remember the M24 was adopted in 1988 which in precision rifle terms is the dark ages and it was quickly outclassed in design and performance by the AI AW and the TRG 22.

If you just want a conversation piece, get a used Accuracy International AW which was and is still a world class precision rifle that is still in service with multiple militaries across the world.

Well. I can tell you that even the nicest and smoothest Remington 700 will not compare to a Sako TRG 22.

Ive had a handfull of Remington 700 through out the last decade or so. Everything from standard hunting types, to full on custom jobs from some reputable smiths. Some was built on older actions that should be as smooth as they can get. And the only one I have left, which started out its life as a Police model and has since been rebuilt to as close as a Mark 13 mod 5 rifle, as I can get it.
Some of the other ones has also been put into various chassis and stocks, changed triggers, you name it.

Even so, I have always been oogling over some of my friends Sako TRGs. Which I for a long time thought looked and felt awesome, but it was just too much money. Well, a few months ago I decided to sell a fully customized Remington 700 SA and my Schmidt & Bender PM2 to fund a decked out TRG, and I am happy that I did.
The action is slick as snot, the trigger is the best I have ever felt or had, and the accuracy is awesome.
So I know, that even the most decked out, well worn in Remington 700, wont come close to the feel and workings of a Sako TRG 22, or 42 for that matter.

They know how to make a rifle in Finland (Soumi).

Having an M24R that was rebuilt using return parts I will say that the best part about the M24 is its history of service to the United States. If you are looking for a historical U. S. piece, go with the M24.

If you are looking for a true precision rifle with ties to many military services, the TRG is a better option IMO.

My M24R is a .9 MOA shooter with factory 7.62x51 FGMM, and was a beast to do load development for. However I finally found a load that will shoot .5-.6 MOA consistently.

That and what others have said its a mediocre precision rifle, the long action 308 with a 3k price tag is hard to swallow, at that point building an m40a1 or a 3 would be a better financial decision.

If you arent stuck on US rifles you could always go with and AI. Cheaper mags than the TRG, as good if not better quality (debatable depending on groups of people you talk to).

Could always collect parts and build a clone also...fun in its own right.

I’m not sure what you mean by “using a TRG to clone”. When you call Europtic, and buy one of their TRG’s, that’s literally what the boy’s overseas use. Same same.

The M24 was a really decent, though basic sniper system.
They were accurate, reliable and easy to use.
The TRG is a better rifle, as is the AI.
You might be able to get your hands on a used AI AW

I follow you now. Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. There are some Sauer SSG 3000, Parker Hale sniper rifles and others that can be picked up on the used market for reasonable prices. The Sako TRG's are fantastic, but they aren't cheap.

You could also build a Navy Mark 13 or Marine Corps M40 for under $4000 through one of the retired Crane or Quantico gunsmiths that operate in the industry. Would be a nicer rifle than the M24 from Remington.

My poor man's Sako (Tikka T3x Tac A1) with my Vortex satisfies me (for now). A TRG would be the cats meow. I'd definitely take A TRG.

Accuracy Internationals come up in the PX here and there. Mkiii for around $2800, AIAT for $3500 ish and AIAW $4000 ish mark. I just picked up an AIAT for just over 3k on here

If I was going to spend 3k on a sniper rifle I would seriously consider the TRG. If I was going Remington I would try to get something close to an M40 not an M24.

That's what I was thinking, I currently have an upgraded A7 in 308 and have been happy with it so far. Do the TRG's have much plastic on them? After I changed the floorplate and the bolt shroud out, the A7 feels a lot better except for the plastic mag.

If I had 3k to spend on the rifle I would forget about the Remington. Unless your looking at a very well setup LRI or GAP etc. Remington is not in the same category as Sako or AI. I have standard R700 AAC-SD, GA precision on a R700 Trued long action, Savage, Armalite, Stiller and Accuracy International.

The AI (as the TRG would be) is hands down better than the others. The GA and Stiller are next on the list. Armalite close behind. Savage next in line (one of the most accurate of them all) and the Rem 700 AAC-SD in XLR evolution in last place.

If you really want the Remington do as others have suggested and get a clone M24 or M40. Of course from a reputable manufacturer.

If I’m spending 3k it’s on a gun that’s discounted to that price. Not an action that’s built up to that price.

Or go with a Tikka Tac A1 and set up with a decent optic for 3k. I would do that before another Remington as well

You can build a nicer rifle than you can buy. As you'd have the up scale of a higher quality barrel, stock and action than even buying a AI or Sako TRG will get you.

The current iteration of the Navy mark 13 uses a Stiller action that Naval Weapons Center Crane sources directly from Stiller. I think they are about $2000. The AICS that the Navy uses is another $1300, Trigger $200, Lilja barrel, and other bits and pieces. The Mark 13's are an expensive rifle to build.

I am a retired Navy guy, and worked with Marines for most of my 20 years so I'd build a Mark 13 or a M40 before I'd ever even think about buying a M24. 300 Win's are Mark 13's and the 308's are M40, I am probably not telling you anything you don't know. Both the Navy SEALS and Marine's used both rifles, but generally standard M40's were issued to Marine infantry snipers. There are M40's built by Crane. I am not 100% sure but I have heard there are Mark 13's built by Quantico. I am an Aviation sailor and didn't grow up in SPECWAR of either community.
