I've been considering a bolt action in 308. I am looking at heavy barreled variants on the Remington 700 platform, and the Savage 110 platform. I am looking at working my way into long distance, and hunting. Besides these two, what do you all have, and as I am retired, looking at 900.00 under at this point. I can build on the rifle as I go.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks so much!

See if you can find a Bergara HMR or Tikka CTR for around that as they would both be much nicer than most Savages or Remingtons. The Howa bravo also seems to be a pretty decent rifle for around that price point.

ETA: I have a Savage FCP-SR (now 110 tactical) in 6.5 creedmoor that I just shot the barrel out of and it shot .5-.75" groups consistently its whole life. For just target shooting and occasional hunting, it is a pretty decent rifle. A tikka and bergara would certainly be a step above, but the savages usually shoot ok.

I’ve owned both the savage and Rem in several 308 platforms. The savages have been more accurate. The remingtons have a better aftermarket support to add to. Although savage has come a long ways

Remington has had some bankruptcy and quality control issues and to be honest I don’t know what their current status is if you buy a rifle from them. Someone I’m sure can chime in on that

Tikka T3X Varmint, Tikka CTR, Bergara, Ruger Precision Rifle are a couple others around your budget. Some can be found under your budget in the px section here

6.5 CM is another round to take a look at if your not set on 308. Will perform better with the 140 class bullets at longer distances than the 308

Sako A7 rough tech range. If you don't plan to change anything on it. I suggest them since the S20 has come out, a lot of places have been blowing the A7 out and it would be below your price cap. True 3 lug bolt, good trigger, and a B&C stock. The only handicap is the 3 rd magazine. Some of the parts are interchangeable with the 75 or 85 actions (EG 85/75 firing pin, 85 bolt shroud.)

Tikka is another great option, good aftermarket and readily available.

Also I am not sure if Eurooptic still has or will get in anymore, but the 700p barreled actions are another option. Mine is pretty good, QC seemed to be good on the action, timing was right, lugs made good contact, scope holes were correct. But your YMMV.

The best bang for the buck in my opinion is a Remington 700p. I picked up a couple a few months back for $750 each. 24” heavy threaded 5r barrel and Hs precision stock. I really like the newer Tactical bolt handles they have and the 40x triggers adjust down to about 1.5 pounds. They have the larger #8-40 holes for scope bases. Mine both shoot sub .5 moa groups with factory ammo. The rifle needs nothing right out of the box.
If you want a chassis the hs precision stock and bottom metal typically sells for about $400 on flea bay. That’ll cover the expense of a krg bravo.
I’m sure the others are darn good too but when it comes to a 308 I don’t think there’s a better production rifle around for about $800. Just my humble opinion

Only thing the 5r gen 2 has over the 700p is fluted Barrel and cerakoted stainless instead of carbon steel. Not sure if that matters to you but to me it was worth the $100 difference. The 40x trigger is better but not by much, if you prefer to upgrade 1 you'll probably want to upgrade the other also.

The stocks are both hs precision but they are not the same grip or forend, both need a cheek riser tho.
