I'm getting ready to start building a 700 in a .308. Was wanting some input on weather I should go with the sps tactical or varmint. Will be putting into a mcrees chassis. Any real advantages/disadvantages, other than recoil and barrel flip, to the 20" barrel?

I have the varmit 26in barrel It is utterly a laser. I have had it out to 600 yds and gotten 1/4 moa and this from a factory barrel.

I have the SPS tactical with the 20in bull barrel and it's 1/2 MOA easy outta the box! This is with match M118LR.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the varmint has a slower twist for lighter bullets, may not be the best choice for long range/ heavy pills.
BTW putting a rifle action/barrel in a different stock isn't really a "build".

Just checked, they both have the same twist, only difference is barrel length. Personally I like longer barrels for higher velocity, gives you more options.

While lovain1932 may be able to get this out of his barrel, I would not bet on this out of a factory barrel, at least not without some load development. 1/4 MOA factory barrels are not the norm, otherwise the custom barrel makers would not have wait lists in the months.

Rocking a 20" tube is fine, but it will work best with 155s and RL15, although 175s can be used. If you actually want a decent rig (since it is obvious that this one did not come out of the custom shop), shitcan the factory tube and have the action blueprinted with a new barrel screwed into it... If you really intend on tapping into the potential of the round, i.e. taking it beyond the 1k mark, you better go with 24"+ of barrel in a 1:10 twist so you can sling heavies such as the 208AMAX or 210VLDs. I rock a 26" 1:10 twist and it does well with a 208AMAX and 51.2 gr of RL17 behind it at 3.060" COAL

im shooting 175g smk bthp with 43g of RL15 and they shot great with the stock barrel/action...and thats with the shitty stock it came with.

Build is on a budget. Getting the rifle, mcrees chassis, and decent glass now. Then later i will be having the action blueprinted, a custom stick, timney trigger. And finally really good glass.

+1 for SPS... Thats what I did. Im probably just going to stick with the stock bbl for now, but will later probably order one from schneider. I hope that doesnt cause a problem with a custom stock fitted for a SPS. Good luck with your build!

I'm new here and this is my first post... That being said, i dont know squat and coincidentally this is also my first build. However, I am gonna stand on a soap box for a little because my friend bought a flashy police savage and I instead chose to do my homework and I think what I found is worth mentioning.
I chose the 700 SPS tactical varmint because it's the same as the 700p but I could just ditch the stock and get whatever I want. I settled on a bell & Carlson Medalist tactical varmint. Drop in was a mild exaggeration. Also I had 200 bucks credit at larue tactical and used it to buy a rail and low scope rings. The build cost about the same as the 700p but I ended up getting a better stock out of the deal. My only other advice would be this: Don't be afraid to break the bank on the scope. What good are you if you can't see anything?! Also it's nice to have a scope that is covered by a solid warranty. Thanks

apparently you didn't do all of your homework... if you set that flashy rem 700 side by side with a flashy Savage in matching stocks, there is a 99.9999999% chance that the savage is going to shoot noticeably better than the Remington... Don't believe me? Try it and post results

apparently you didn't do all of your homework... if you set that flashy rem 700 side by side with a flashy Savage in matching stocks, there is a 99.9999999% chance that the savage is going to shoot noticeably better than the Remington... Don't believe me? Try it and post results

I have a real hard time putting shots out on most game past that range anyway and if i do, it not with the 308. GAP built 270wsm for that... and it is fast and flat... but fun shooting, get this 20 inch fast handling, get out the truck and on target quick, accurate, affordable rifle out and get to bang'n! Hell it really don't matter, just get to shoot'n!!! Yea!

Hey man look Im sorry I threw you off keester. The fact that it was a savage was NOT the issue. I actually like his savage. Its a 110 BA and its very VERY strange looking... but it very elite for a factory boomstick. The point that I neglected to mention was that he put a wal mart $40 scope on the top of it! I mentioned the importance of good glass, but forgot to properly connect the two statements because I was posting with my iphone and its kinda tough to scroll up and down and add stuff. I always say there should be "No excuses, only reasons." haha Anyway YES!! His gun is very badass and Im sure with the proper tools and skill it will punch a hole in a quarter above and beyond my remington in its current state.... but I think you will agree that he CLEARLY didn't take the time to research precision shooting... at all! He just bought a flashy firearm for its aggressive looks... and I can say that because I know this man pretty well and its totally his MO. Anyway, I was merely attempting to convey that research is important and his 1600 bucks didn't get him on paper, it just put a bunch of lead into the dirt. I DO credit him for convincing me that I need a new bolt action rifle. hahaha
Soooo... If I tried your recommendation to shoot both rifles at the range this afternoon, Im sure you would agree that there is a 99.999999% chance that his savage wont do anything but kill a sand dune and mine will probably be somewhere near the target even with my novice skills. I know thats totally not what you meant but it supports my initial opinion that the scope and the rifle should cost somewhere near the same.

I'm not sure if anyone said this, but you may want to look at the SPS Tactical AAC-SD it has a 1:10 twist not the 1:12 like the others and it only cost about $20 more.

I have the 26" Varmint .308, and I outfitted it with Vortex glass, this rifle is a tackdriver, straight out of the box.
It has teh X mark trigger, and even though I have been planning on adjusting it, I really dont' want to mess with a good thing:
Here is just yesterday, 5 shot group, Hornady 168 BTHP:
And I have had many many more days just like this, and better, with just about anything I put down it, from 150 grain Win PP, to the 168 BTHP and Amax, and up to Win 180 PP. Federal, Remington, Hornady, Winchester, whatever...all shoots about the same.
From day one, has been sub MOA, and more times than not, is a 1/2" MOA. If you can do your part, it will to. Couldnt be happier

that explains quite a bit in itself. personally I wouldn't have one of those 110BAs. that stock looks snagtasic as hell and would probably get invited to a scrap yard quickly... my thoughts are to buy the best glass you can afford, which these days is not much, but Bushnell is ok, then there is NF, IOR, USO, S&B, and Hensoldt.

apparently you didn't do all of your homework... if you set that flashy rem 700 side by side with a flashy Savage in matching stocks, there is a 99.9999999% chance that the savage is going to shoot noticeably better than the Remington... Don't believe me? Try it and post results </div></div>
Hey man look Im sorry I threw you off keester. The fact that it was a savage was NOT the issue. I actually like his savage. Its a 110 BA and its very VERY strange looking... but it very elite for a factory boomstick. The point that I neglected to mention was that he put a <span style="color: #FF0000">wal mart $40 scope </span>on the top of it! I mentioned the importance of good glass, but forgot to properly connect the two statements because I was posting with my iphone and its kinda tough to scroll up and down and add stuff. I always say there should be "No excuses, only reasons." haha Anyway YES!! His gun is very badass and Im sure with the proper tools and skill it will punch a hole in a quarter above and beyond my remington in its current state.... but I think you will agree that he CLEARLY didn't take the time to research precision shooting... at all! He just bought a flashy firearm for its aggressive looks... and I can say that because I know this man pretty well and its totally his MO. Anyway, I was merely attempting to convey that research is important and his 1600 bucks didn't get him on paper, it just put a bunch of lead into the dirt. I DO credit him for convincing me that I need a new bolt action rifle. hahaha
Soooo... If I tried your recommendation to shoot both rifles at the range this afternoon, Im sure you would agree that there is a 99.999999% chance that his savage wont do anything but kill a sand dune and mine will probably be somewhere near the target even with my novice skills. From day one, has been sub MOA, and more times than not, is a 1/2" MOA. If you can do your part, it will to. Couldnt be happier </div></div>

And you know what, I never even read that at bottom of target until you said something, even with it staring me in teh face.

Weather finally permitted me to get to the range, kinda. Ever changing winds only allowed me to shoot two shot groups. All were right at 1/2 moa at 100 yards with 168 GMM. Very please with the performance. McRees chassis felt great.
