I have a custom built Rifle, Rem700 action, Kreiger MTU taper bbl, and AIC1.0 chassis. It is very accurate. But it is like carrying a crooked stick of pulpwood! I am considering gettting the bbl reprofiled and shorten it to 22" from current 24". I am also exploring options on changing the AIC out to a fiberglass stock. Do I risk losing accuracy on the bbl by having it reprofiled? If there is a risk in that I'd probly be better off selling complete pkg and starting over. Thanks in advance.

Re: ReProfile Excellent shooting barrel

Sounds like a lot changes to one rifle, maybe you just need another one in your arsenal. Shortening it is not a problem, a significant recontour will most likely not be a good thing.

Re: ReProfile Excellent shooting barrel

I would change the stock first as that would most likely be your biggest weight loss. As for reprofiling the barrel, as long as it was PROPERLY stress relieved it would theoretically be ok, but I would say no matter what you would be gambling on whether or not it f'd it up. Also, I would not try to reprofile a button rifled barrel(again) as they seem to open up. Cut rifled barrels seem to hold up better to reprofiling.

Re: ReProfile Excellent shooting barrel

I have had a few barrels reprofiled. A couple of Obermyers and a Krieger if I recall correctly. All shot fine after being done. Randy Gregory of Accuracy Unlimited did the work. Excellent work with very reasonable turnaround times.

Re: ReProfile Excellent shooting barrel

I reprofiled a buttoned barrel just a bit, like about .030 reduction at the muzzle, a couple years ago. Made a good jack handle out of it.

Re: ReProfile Excellent shooting barrel

You can turn a cut rifled barrel (Kreiger, Obermyer, etc) with far less fear of changing the interior diameter than with a button rifled barrel.

Typically shortening the barrel will change balance quicker than changing the profile.

Re: ReProfile Excellent shooting barrel

Why does anyone think a "re-profile" would cause any more stress than the original turning?

The simple answer is you risk changing (good or bad) accuracy when you make changes.

Im with TMK. Why would it be any different than the original turning?
If thats the case wouldnt every accurate barrel need to be a straight tube with an obese od?
