Ruger Precision Rifle Discussion

"Mines liking Nosler and SMK. Hornady did well at 1000."

I think it's crazy how different barrels/actions, even made in the same factory on the same machines will prefer different ammo. That aspect of the rifle gives it a personality that makes it feel more "real" to me than just a collection of machined parts.

BTW, thanks. The weather was beautiful here (Texas), the range was empty, quiet, and I was feeling good.

Anybody out there with experience using AICS, Accurate, or any other type of aftermarket mag for the RPR? I got some of the new pmag AICS knockoffs and there is quite a bit of play in them left to right when inserted in the mag well. Anything out there fit a little better? Every now and again I get a round that wont feed right. As long as im smooth on the bolt and work it at a decent pace every thing seems to go off without hitch. So, maybe the feeding issues are user error?

I've only used pmags. No issues.

^ Nice. I have the .308 as well. I'm sure you'll be very satisfied.

So I see you can get the 175 SMK's with a moly coating. Anyone ever use moly coated bullets? Notice much of a difference?

Lefty, I'll change me in with others steering you away from moly. Lots of bad things happen with time, but the worst is a ring of moly that forms in the throat and cannot be removed; will ruin a barrel. If you want to try a coating, check out David Tubb's boron nitride "Final Finish" system (http://www.davidtubb.com/final-finish-bullet-kits). Personally, been there, done that, have not found coated bullets to be worth th extra effort, have eliminated that extra variable, and have happily been shooting naked for years .

Thanks for the info Zen! Also, when I was looking at them on MidwayUSA, they only offered the coating on a quantity of 500. Not on the 100. I'm not paying and then being stuck with 500 rounds that ruin my shit.

Pmag 10 LR/SR work perfect in mine, as do AICS 5 and 10 rounders

Mine does not like the actual AI mag, but does like accurate mags so that is what I use. I also have the magpul aics mags but don't use them that much since my reload is longer then what the magpul mag can handle.

Hey guys I need some help, I just got a vortex 6-24x50pst for my rpr I need a set of rings to clear it. I had a vortex 4-16x44hst in a set of Nightforce (high) rings worked great. just want to know if any of you guys have a similar set up and you can give me some advice on a set of rings for the 50 to clear. Thanks

I use these. Gives my 2.5 inches of sight height from center of chamber to middle of tube. Sits just perfect on the top rail on my Bushnell ERS

I like the pmags. Got four of them now

Anybody shooting PMags: This got lost in the departure of the Hide from Scout. Just for grins, I had designed a single shot follower that I designed after seeing other guys making them out of PVC. I wanted to see if I could offer shooters a cheap and reliable option for single shot function that was maybe a little more reliable. It fits on top of the existing follower - you have to pull the floorplate off the mag (I made a tool to speed that up as well),place this follower on top of the existing unit, and reassemble it. The mag is now dedicated to single shot in bolt guns, and I suspect in AR platforms as well, though I'm still testing that functionality - bolt lockback, load single, release bolt to load, fire, repeat. I made the prototypes on a high end 3D program using regular PLA, and two Hide members have put a combined 500 or so rounds down their RPRs with no issues. Since PRS season is upon us, I'm ready to make them available immediately for the 7.62 PMAGs only - AI mags don't need it. The idea is an inexpensive, reliable single shot option short of buying a Bobsled. A .223 mag version is almost complete and should be prototyped and tested by the end of the week. SO: Here's a pic of the kit below; two followers, Mag tool, carrier rings, $12 shipped through PayPal. I need a couple days to set up a separate thread in the Post Exchange/Accessories Forum. I'm also working on a follower for PMAGs to allow semi-auto use with the ability to toss in a single round to finish a string of fire when your mag runs dry and you don't want to break position to change mags. FWIW, this isn't any attempt to get rich on my part, just seeing fi I can make some items that I am seeing a possible need for.

Definitely something not everyone likes. Would be nice if you could get a follower with no stop if you preferred.

Actually easy to take care of this minor annoyance. Insert empty magazine in the gun, open bolt and then slam it forward into the closed position. After a few iterations of this the bolt will have created the channel needed to close on empty.

I use the same scope and Vortex Matched Rings (1.45") and they are perfect. Can even fit Vortex defender cap on no problem.

Midway USA says..

Mounts to rifle-length, mil-spec carbine, or A5-length receiver extension tubes

So I believe yes, you will need a rifle length tube

5 rounds Hornady ELD-M 140gr from the prone, 100yds.

Question, just picked up a gen 3 magpul prs. Do I need a rifle length buffer?

Nope. Installed it on my carbine tube using the supplied (shorter) adapter, but the length (buttpad all the way in) is a little long for my taste.

Nice! Can you get a spread on that? My best 5 at 100 was .17. I think someone else shot a .16

It's a little tough to tell, but I'm measuring between .6" and .65" edge to edge. So we're sitting at .4" or less for the group and that's my personal best with around 275 rounds through the rifle and no prior long range/precision experience.

That's some great shooting!

Thats sick man. Nice job!

Shot a .3 BC to BC with my 175 SMK load today. Haven't done that in a while so that was cool.

I'm joining the 6.5 CM class with a RPR... going to do all hand loads with this rifle and wanting to know what you all have had luck with. I'm looking into the Berger hybrids, Noslers, and Hornady ELD-M's. what powder charge has been finding the best accuracy node, bullet depth, all that fun stuff.. thanks in advance!

Was curious if anyone can help me answer this. If I wanted a spuhr mount for a gen 2 with a 50mm objective what ring height would I need for a 0 moa mount or a 20 moa mount to clear the handguard on the 20 moa rail?

42.7gr of H4350 with the 140gr ELD pushing 2755fps , 0.020" off lands. Loads of good load data in the reload depot thread. You are going to love the 6.5CM

First time post on this forum, recently purchased my Ruger in a 6.5 Creedmoor. Broke the barrel in with cleaning after each of my first 10 shots.
hand loaded with IMR 4451 with 42.5 grains using the Hornady 140 grain ELD Match.
five shoot group was .204 @ 100 yards ( tried to attach the picture, if it didn't load I will keep trying)
At 200 yards it grouped at 1 inch
I was Approx. .033 off the rifling with an OACL of 2.873
ft/sec was running 2,670-2,691
I used the Magpul PMAG 10 7.62AC recommended on this site to allow me set the bullet longer to this length to fit into the magazine.
The PMAG provided me with Approx. .050 added length in the mag vs. the magizine that was supplied.

This is why at the range, the shop, or on the board, People rave about this rifle. Nicely done!

New to shooting and I am looking at picking one of these up. I saw someone ask whether these actions had any potential for similar work that goes into a Rem 700, I am curious as well.

Not sure about work similar to a rem 700 as I've never owned one before. However, this is a great rifle at a great price for anyone who is a beginner looking to get into precision and or long range shooting. Many of us here just started reloading and shooting out to or even past 1000 yards in 2016. An AR 15 platform means you can upgrade and build the rifle up even more as you grow. I would absolutely recommend this rifle to anyone looking to join the precision and long range community

Not sure what you mean as well but one of the old threads on the old sight had a great write up on how someone buffed the bolt and other portions of the action to make it cycle smoother.
It is going to be a shame to loose all that good info. Looks like they did not move those three threads with thousands of posts over. Why I have no idea since it looks like the Desert Tech thread some how got all of their threads and posts moved. Does quite seem right to lose all that good info.
