San Diego, CA born and raised. Just getting into the bolt action game. Proud owner of a M700 5R in .308 20" threaded. Researching my optics options. Lookin at SWFA, Nightforce or Vortex. My rifle will be an all around rifle as a target, hunting and being able to reach out and touch "something".

welcome to the sport, San diego offers some fun places to shoot if you know where to look. Read on here alot there is about 100 threads comparing those scopes

Welcome,

gave up on San Diego and moved north to Menifee in 2010. The three ranges that may be of use to you are:

Project 2K - indoor 100 yard range but their new rules are a little odd
Delzura - (South Bay Rod & Gun Club) 300 yard range use to be 20 bucks a day but not sure now.
Palma - (Indian reservation) out to around 1000 yards

Actually, I think the Palma range you're referring to is the Pala range located on the Pala Indian reservation. Great range, but the schedule can be tricky. Here's the website:

Welcome! How nice of an optic are you willing to take hunting? Dropping a nightforce down a creek bed would be awfully disappointing. Check out the offerings from SWFA and the Weaver Tactical to get you into a Mil/Mil scope that won't break the bank. I'm also shooting a 5R milspec currently. This is my work in progress:

I'm in the San Diego area too. I do handgun shooting at Iron Sights in O'side if you ever wanted to meet up there. Enjoy the forum and try not to have a thin skin around here.

Also from SD, shoot at Iron Sights, Pala, Rainbow, Escondido Fish & Game into pistol, carbine, long range and 3 gun (when I can borrow a shotgun). Deployed at the moment but always looking for folks to shoot with, especially if they know anywhere in the desert for long range over 1000 yrds, seriously, always happy to jon up with folks.

Welcome to the Hide, great place, great people!
