It seems the general concensus would say stick with Rem to build from. As far as taking a Rem action that's been trued and lapped and taking a Sav action that's been trued and timed what are the differences. I believe both are about the same diameter. Is one more rigid than the other? Is the only reason guy's prefer Rem because of stock and trigger options? Just curious on your thoughts.

I recently went thru this same issue of what to build on for a 260.I compared prices for a similar build on each action and they were within $100 of each other.I have both Savage and Rem and like each,there are no losers here.I ended up going with a Remington action, but only because I found a good deal on one.Had it been the other way around I would have just as readily built it on a Savage with no regrets.Flip a coin!

I believe the general thought (after reading tons of posts on here) is that the remington action has more aftermarket parts available for it. Also, most of the top end gun smiths use either the remington action or some custom action to base their rifles off of. If you have a savage action then by all means use it and save the money. It really depends on what you want to do with the rifle. When put together my .223 bolt rifle I wanted something that shot great out of the box without needing to do much to it. For that rifle I chose a savage. However, now I'm building a .308 bolt rifle and I just picked up a 700 sps tactical because a large portion of this rifle is going to be aftermarket parts.

The aftermarket has caught up quite a bit in the last few years for the Savage. You will find that you can get the high end stocks for either Rem or Savage now. A Savage action doesn't necessarily need to be trued for great accuracy, but it doesn't hurt. I had mine trued. I have both and the main difference between the two is that I was able to do most of the work on the Savage myself. IE. Installing/headspacing barrel, bolt knob, stock work. I sent my Remington to a smith to have everything done. Also, when you shoot out a barrel a Savage is much cheaper to rebarrel. Brux-400 ish, Shilen 320ish, Criterion-270ish, etc.

I have Savages and Remingtons also, and both are great. It's easy to find <span style="font-weight: bold">new</span> aftermarket parts for either. However, if I were wanting to build a rifle trying to use pre-owned parts, I would go with the Remington. If you watch these forums you see way more Remington parts and accessories come up for sale than Savage.
