Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

My Father is in the market for a new tactical 308 bolt rifle. Thought I had him talked into a new 700P, but now he is considering a Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock. Is it just as good as a 700P? The price range looks fairly close, with the 700P almost always being more expensive. I did a search on here, but I found more "for sale" ads then actual info. I don't know nothing about Savage rifles, so educate me on them. What's the deal with the accu-trigger?

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

He will be pleased with it!! The accutrigger is actually pretty nice once you get use to it. It kinda works like a Glock trigger and it breaks really nice! I've had the 700P and the 10FP's and I'd go with the Savage!!

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

if you dont count the stock i like rem over savage. but the sav. witht he hs stock is a great setup, thats what i use.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

To me, the weak part of the 10FP was the stock and the trigger (the barrel was every bit as good as the Rem700) . The HS Precision cures the stock problem, and the Accutrigger (I'm told) cures the trigger problem.

The only remainign problem is that the 700 has far and away more custimizing options available.

Every buyer has to decide if that's a problem for them.

For the same money (or near to it) I'd get the 700.

(FTR, I've owned both)

In reality, I'd go with a gas gun, depending on what your intended use is.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

last time it was asked more savage owners took the time to post in favor or savage than rem owners. but all the savage support was very positive. look back or confine your search to just the rifles section using advanced search. go back 6 months, youll find it. you can get an A5 McMillan stock too or a choate copy of an A5 thats possibly cheaper. i asked alot of guys i know and it was 60/40 savage

trigger is fine and comes set at 1.5 pounds. no creep, just breaks crisp and clean. plenty of little tips to smooth the action in this forum. cant say about the barrel compared to another, this is my first bolt rifle. its a heavy contour, their varmint is the same as this tactical.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

I have owned both and without a doubt to me the savage is a much better out of the box rifle, better stock, better trigger, and from my experience also shoot better. I currently own to savages with the new target action, and one switch barrel savage 10 (308,22-250ai) dressed in mcmillan a5 w/dbm, which feels worlds better to me than even a rem 5r which is about the same price.

I would strongly recommend the mcmillan over the hs if he can afford it.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

I have a model 12 i built and it sits in a HS.Precision stock and i really like it and it is my favorite. The new Accustocks are ok but i still dont likem. The 10 FCP McMillan is sweet also but i would bed it.Are they as good as a 700 P yes but thats an old fight that ain't worth fighting anymore.I liked the accutrigger it worked great for me..............Danny

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

I have had the FCP-HS 308 for a couple of years now. It has shot better than MOA from day one. The last couple of months I have been shooting about 1/2MOA with the 168A-Maxes. The stock is nice and rigid, I added a Karsten adjustable cheek rest. The accu-trigger is very good for a factory trigger. When it is time to upgrade, there is good aftermarket support for the Savages now.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

you may be able to swap out parts with the target accutrigger for a lighter pull too if you want. the target version goes down to 6 oz i believe

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

I have an SPS and a 10fcp package with the least desirable stock option; The Savage plastic stock. I yanked off the crappy scope rings and mounts and replaced them with EGW 20 MOA, Burris Tactical rings and the Buckmasters 4-18 Mil-dot scope.

After some creative bedding (with a 12" piece of 3/8" all thread in the forearm) it is stiffer now and shoots pretty dern well. It'll do until I can devise a way to buy a new stock for it. Leaning to a B&C that I can put in the hands of Jeff at CDI for his BDM magic. Wanna keep the commerce local don't ya know!

It's right there with my SPS with the same loads. I'd suggest your old man would do even better with the rifle you ask about.

And there are ass loads of aftermarket Savage mods available now.

Do you really use that laser on your scope? Can you describe how? Sighting in?

I occasionally use it in lowlight conditions, mostly for when I shoot subsonic ammo and up close stuff. It also happens to be pretty bright, and works almost like an illuminator. It just happened to be in tow when I went shooting that day.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

might as well show mine. I just added the Karsten as well. Much much better cheek fit. I can close my eyes, sit down with the rifle, and be perfectly aligned with the scope.

You'll like the stock.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

I have one too and have shot a 3.85" 5 shot group at 750 yards. Have a rifle basix trigger and nightforce scope. I am swapping the barrel out for a mcgowen 6.5/284 norma for some BR shooting

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

With a Savage you can have a multi caliber. Call Shilen and order a 260, 6.5 x 47 or 223 or 243 and just screw them on and shoot. Plus I've seen the same model with the McMillan A series stock.......I don't believe it is bedded though......but thats a nice setup for $1000.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

Took my FCP/HS out today to test out a couple loads. It definitely liked the hotter load of 42.9 IMR 4064 w/ SMK 168's. Once I got everything adjusted it cranked out a best 3 shot group of .4 MOA. I had 6 shots in a .8 group as well. Now that I know what load to start "mass" producing I can get at those 600 yard targets next time.

Re: Savage 10 FCP w/ HS Precision stock...opinions.

I happened to be at the range a couple of weeks ago and someone let me shoot their 10FCP. Being a new shooter I was surprised at how comfortable and accurate to shoot it was. Am now trying to work out how I can sneak on into the house and past the wife..

This is why I might be going with a Savage for my next puchase as it seems to be very easy to swap barrels (own a 700P) but I want a .260.
