Hi, I am on this forum to learn about optics as I just started shooting a bit longer.

I took this blurb from my intro thread to get some more exposure....

I have recently been itching to get into a higher power optic for my CMMG MK3 CBR AR10. I had a Millett LRS and thought it was faulty so I sent it back for a full refund. Turns out it was an imperfection on the crown of the gun (CMMG was adamant about looking it over and paid for both ways of shipping). Apparently the Millett wasn't the problem. BUT, with this new chance to do it right I am considering buying a new optic that is not a Millett as my budget has increased.

Here is what I am looking for in a scope:
1. a round about "size" of 6-24x50
2. MOA Turrets
3. Mildot reticle
4. priced 600-900
5. exposed turrets
6. side focus "knob"

Here are the scopes I have come up with after research:
1. Vortex Viper PST FFP MOA - 860.00 shipped
2. Millett LRS 6-25x56 - 480.00 shipped
3. Trijicon Accupoint TR23-2 5-20x50 - 890.00 shipped
4. Bushnell elite Tac (not MOA though...) - 880.00 shipped
5. Zeiss Conquest HD5 5-25x50 - 900.00

Are there any other optics I should be considering at that price point and "size" demand? I AM 100% willing to buy a used scope!!

Under 1000. I like the magnification because it is a lot easier to see as a person who wears glasses for farsighted-ness. I must also have some other eye issue where colors blend at any range (my whole life). Also, being colorblind doesn't make matters better. Maybe long range shooting isn't for me? Lol

Most common mistakes for folks new to long range shooting when buying optics.

1. Skimping on the budget ($600 scope on a $2500 rifle)

2. Too much magnification (24x for shooting 500m)

3. Turrets and reticle mismatch (MOA turrets, mildot reticle)

4. Poor mounting job (rings not torqued properly and scope canted)

The best way to avoid these problems, in my opinion is to "ask questions" and follow the "crawl, walk, run" process.

My vote is for the Bushnell. But, if you absolutely have to have MOA, go Vortex. You are just making it harder by not having the reticle/turrets match.

I understand that part by now (I think). I have watched/read videos and articles and the only one that's made sense is fishing fools.

Here's what I think I have learned that I did not understand before. The space between mil dots is "10" and if I am zeroing my rifle at 100 yours I need to adjust based on how far off my shot was. So, if it was 1 Mildot low and one complete mil dot right right... I would go 10 clicks up and then 10 clicks left? Is that correct?

I think I do understand that the actual unit of measurement is arbitrary because you are using a "controlled" and equivalent measuring device, right!?!?!

The first thing you got to do stop thinking in inches.

Use the ruler that's built into your scope.

If your shots .5 mils from bull's-eye, then you would adjust that much on your scope

Wow, sound like I am all kinds of wrong then! I do plan on shooting 1000 in the limited instances that I will have so I think the 24x will be useful. And, i am attepting to put a 1k scope on a 1700 dollar AR10 (not what you specified).

What scope would you reccomend that is under 1500? (Hypothetical). Money really isn't an issue, it's the thought of it that is what is holding me back.

Thank you very much (in advance)!!!

I believe the vortex is MOA/MOA. Am I correct by that statement?

And let me pose this question to the group....

Based upon what I've actually owned and used:

1) Bushnell DMR 3.5-21x50 w/ G2DMR reticle
2) Nightforce NXS 3-15x50 w/ MRAD turrets and milliradian reticle of your choice

Those two aren't directly comparable in terms of features (the Bushnell is FFP, the NXS is SFP - there are other detail differences, but this one is the most significant); both will provide a very high level of performance for the price.

No, Vortex makes all of its medium- and high-grade scopes available in MOA/MOA and MIL/MIL. So you can order yours in MOA or MIL, no problem.

I personally like Vortex, and for serious work would get a Razor HD (which is what I got on my LR rig), maybe a used one to fit within your price range - made like a tank, tracks great. Viper PST FFP 6-24x50 is good and appears well within your pice range.

And let me disagree with Dogtown here: there is no such thing as "extra magnification", only "insufficient magnification". If you need less magnification, you should be able to manage setting your magnification lower (Razor's lowest mag is 5x, Viper's - 6x). But if you need more (say, 20x) and your scope goes only to 15x - you're screwed. I wish my scope wold go to at least 25x, and occasionally am missing that capability.

People make an argument that in the old days snipers used 10x fixed power scopes and were doing fine with all the distances they shot at. This argument cuts both ways - they were "doing fine" with the scope's LOWEST magnification of 10x. Not to mention that tools of the trade improved quite a bit since then. For example, IMHO nobody sane would voluntarily use today a MIL reticle with MOA turrets...

Update, got the Vortex 6-24 FFP MOA/MOA and took it to the range yesterday.

Had a little trouble with the PPU 145grain only grouping at 2inches. Then switched to Federal OTM 168G and had good results (3 touching at 100y).

I will say this about the vortex Viper PST. At the same range in the same weather I have shot a gun with a brand new Nightforce 5.5-22x50 NXS and my vortex is noticeably "clearer" at 400 yards at any magnification. In fact, the Nightforce barely edged out a Millett LRS in terms of haziness/clarity.

Just stating my opinion....
