I have seen a number of pictures here on the hide of precision rifle scopes that appear to have another red-dot, or holographic aiming devise mounted on the precision scope. Is this for rapid acquisition in the sight picture of a long range target then shifting to the precision scope? Who makes the more popular variances? An example is on the sample video clip of "setting up the rifle" by Frank Galli. I would post the pic here but I am not sure how to do that.

For engaging targets at close range. Say you have a 5-25x scope but need to make some quick shots inside 50yds. Even turned all the way down to 5x you will not be on target very quick. A red-dot mounted on top or at 45* lets you have the best of both worlds.

Also if you are calling predators and the odd one climbs over your back to get to the call. 3x even blows moosecock.

For most other forums my avatar is a sandwich clip art with the Superman S in the background.
OP, one thing to consider is that a red dot on top of the scope is way up over the bore, which means you're gonna have to compensate for height over bore for close stuff. That's why I'd recommend an offset mount, to keep it low.

I asked about this exact topic a few weeks ago and didn't get any answers. Was interested in how they're set up. I've seen right handed shooters mount them on the right side of their main scope, and on the left. Left handed shooters doing the same, either side. I'd imagine a right-handed shooter, with face on the left, would want the red-dot on the left?

In the 3 gun world, they are normally mounted on your strong side, at a 45 degree angle.

So right hander, it is on the right. To use, rotate rifle 45 degrees to the left and use the holo sight.
