Scratch on 5R Out of Box

Hey guys,

I got a 5R a week or two back. Out of the box, it had a small scuff on the side of receiver, going down past the side of the stock (where it couldn't be seen well), so I didn't think much of it. I installed it into an AICS this evening and, after switching stocks, it's much more apparent now that it isn't hidden at all by the stock.

Is this kind of finish issue something that is common on 5R's and 700's in general? If so, I won't worry about it; it is pretty noticeable in person, so I'd like to get it corrected. I really just don't want to send it in to Remington and deal with a week or two turnaround time, especially if the replacement one has a good chance of having the same kind of finish issues.

What say you?

Shoot it.. Don't worry so much about it... It's prob gonna get a scratch on it when you actually shoot it.. If your that upset after awhile, get it duracoated. Real guns get scars. Its bound to happen! Enjoy the 5r I have one and love it. Been a good little gun out if the box.

I wouldn't be too concerned about it Skyyr. It doesn't looks too bad to me at all.
I used to be the same way about my rifles (wanting everything perfect when I received them)until I realized what they are: tools. Tools get scratched and dirty if you use them. Heck, 5 or 6 trips to the range and you will probably do even worse to it yourself.

That being said, I do feel that there is a price threshold worthy of complaining when you feel you didn't get what you paid for, but only you can make the determination of what the threshold is for you. $1,000 may be it for you, $2,500 may be it for me and $5,000 may be that threshold for some of the heavy hitters on this site.

I just got in a new suppressor that has three smudges on the Cerakote finish. A couple of years ago that would bother me. Now I realize what I'm going to eventually do to it myself, and a few smudges in the finish don't bother me at all.

I'd say as long at the issue you have with the finish will not allow/promote corrosion, I'd probably let it be and then have it professionally Cerakoted one day if you want to.



However, ultimately you are the one that needs to be happy with the rifle.

Pull it out of the stock and bead blast it yourself. If you don't have a blasting setup, make one yourself.

Or, put other scratches on it so it doesn't look like a shelf queen.

If you send it back for that you will need to be prepared to keep sending them back as you are most likely going to have marks, etc on just about any replacements you receive. And the thing that's really gonna piss you off is when you finally get a 'good' one and then you put your first scratch on it during your first outing. Shoot it.

I rattle can paint my rifles so I'd be the wrong one to ask lol. My rifles get used in the field so I dont worry about scratches. The only thing I care about is the crown, the only place a scratch matters.

Scratches on rifles out of the box seem to be more common these days. I just bought a Colt AR 15 MP-R TALO and it had 3 small scratches on it. a little aluminum black fixed that

Reminds me of the scratched Nightforce thread a while back. But seriously this is a Stainless rifle and therefore scratches will not cause the rifle to rust or anything, like if you had non SS...

will be like the 4x4s i see with 8 inches of lift, chrome accents, and fancy paint jobs that never see the mud lol. i even saw a guy who got stuck driving his truck through a field so he could avoid the traffic. only reason he got stuck was because he didn't know how to put it 4 wheel drive (I'm dead serious. this guy had no fucking clue).

me and a buddy watched as we drank our coffee and he forked over a few hundred to get pulled out by a tow truck. the look on his face when we were doing donuts on the same spot he got stuck was priceless.


all in all though i would be a bit upset if i purchased a new truck and it already had a scratch. i want to be the one to put the first dings and scratches into it. it shouldn't be like that from the factory. same goes with my firearms so i feel your pain. most likely the gun shop screwed with it too much.

That's exactly how I feel on the matter. I don't care so much about the scratch as the fact that it came like that and I'm not the one that put it there. I'm pretty sure it was done at the factory - it went down past the stock and it's been buffed after the fact.

I'm not too concerned over it, just perturbed. I'll call Remington and see if there's a quick, painless way to address it. If there is, I'll take it (I'm not planning on going to the range until next weekend). If not, I'll just keep it as is.

Any other upgrades or equipment anyone recommends? It's a plain-jane 5R in an AICS for now (I'll be mounting an F1 MLR on it shortly). I intend to get an Atlas bipod when funds allow.

I doubt Remington can do much to blend in that blemish. I'd Cerakote it in the color of your choice and call it good. I've had a 5R for four years that I Duracoated the first week I bought it. I've shot tactical matches, mid-range F-Class matches, and hunted with it. It's a little scratched up and looks like a well-loved rifle should.

The only upgrades I have done to mine is have an enlarged bolt handle added (Phoenix Custom Rifles), CDI bottom metal, and I added a Timney 510 trigger. I liked my X-Mark trigger when I first bought the rifle but it went tits up on me in the middle of a match.

Every new firearm (pistol or rifle) I purchase meets the same fate, minus scope. Once the purchase is made I drive home, walk into my back yard and drop it. Then, I pick it up. Drop it. Pick it up. Walk back inside and clean it up. Gets you over it quick. This is a tool. If you're afraid of scratches you're doing it wrong.

Gun went from Rem-Dist-FFL-U. Hard to say Remington did it.

We had a new TRG-42 arrive today. Bedding block (aluminum) is scratched & one of the torx screw heads is broke in the worthless 0 degree base they now feel compelled to install...this is the 2nd TRG we have received that shows "mis-handling.

Will fix it tomorrow.

Im fairly certain a scratched reciever means it has seen the outside of a safe, id be afeared itd blow up if it came out of a safe one or two more times. Id sell it in a hurry

IMO if you're worried about a scratch on a rifle, you've got bigger, deep seated issues. It's a rifle. If I had a dollar for all the scratches on mine I could buy a new rifle.

I see a scratch/blemish on a rifle as having gotten the first one out of the way.

Normally I can usually get a pretty good indicator as to how versed and knowledgeable someone is in shooting by looking at the condition of use that their weapon is in.

I "just got" a Remmy 5R 223. The chamber looks like someone used a screw driver, to chisel out a stuck case. Was "supposed to be new" Not happy, but I'm going to shoot her, and see. Any thing on the "outside" is going to happen, someday. Stuff that hurts the accuracy of the gun, was my only concern. Rifles get scratched, dropped, etc. It'll happen. This is on the "face" of the chamber. I'm hoping it won't affect the accuracy. I was going to have her chamber cut down,and "adjusted", as 5R's always have a long throat, so no worries, really.

Spray can that 5R and don't fret that scratch. The beauty of DIY paint is that you can touch it up any time at all.

To help the original poster out you can hide it if the finish is a sand blasted type SS surface. Not sure on the Remington 5r but if you want to blend it in find some sand paper that has a similar texture (grit) and cut a small piece off to place it over the blemish with the grit side on the barrel. Now hold it there and use a small brass hammer and lightly tap the sand paper and lift it up to see the result. Continue this tap and lift until you achieve the result your pleased with.

With the AICS pull, the action out and see if you don't notice some "marks" where the bedding block contacts the action.

I wouldn't worry about it if you plan on shooting it.
