Noticing a common thread: "A woman tried to X with her emotional support Y." Somebody has to say it: bitches be crazy.
Our lab, Max, has been in training to be a therapy dog since we took him home at 8 weeks. I know the time and effort, and money, it takes to train and socialize him. As well as making sure he passes his exams/certifications. The goal is so my wife can take him with her to the hospital to brighten up sick and dying peoples lives. But, it’s obvious that most people out there are abusing the system. And I would love to make it so Max can visit them in the hospital one day. ?

He’s awesome. Really gentle when he’s “working”. But typical goofy lab when he isn’t.
I spent many months in the hospital. I was very happy after fair bit of time to actually be able to get into a wheelchair, and get outside. (this was during the summer months). Going from an active lifestyle of professional tradesman with numerous interests on the side, to 'locked down in a hospital against my will' (I saw it as a prison sentence) due to an irresponsible 18 y/o behind a wheel. I had asked permission from the doctors and nursing staff, if I could have my mother's dog (chihuahua) there with me. They all said "as long as he's well-behaved and that none of my fellow inmates (other hospitalized men in the same room) have any problem with it, then fine".
Game on. I called up my mom, and had her bring Chico each morning on her way to work, and then she picked him up on her way back home. He was a blast to have around, and mostly just laid on my lap as I was outside in the sun, reading books. He was "my little buddy" and a bit of an attraction to others, including nurses. He helped make the days go by. But I can honestly say, I NEVER forced his presence on anyone. I got clearance from any/all involved beforehand.
His presence there was a help to me, at that time. So I can 'get that' for some folks. Those who're too afraid to see themselves in a mirror though.... that's a whole different level of "felony stupid" for a whole other conversation. I've no use for safe-space, broken-brained folks such as that.

I saw a lot of dogs come visit hospice patients on my unit when I was in my mid 20’s.
Had one pug pup we had one of the nurse practitioners bring in every day for about 6 days in a row until that lovely lady passed.
That pup was as squirrely as I’ll get out, but put him on the bed with that lady and he would snuggle up where she could pet him with her hand that still worked. He would lie there for hours. The staff all agreed to take him out for walks and the bathroom on breaks. Her need for pain meds was way less than half of before after we had that pup there. She had a brain tumor.
I was the charge nurse and did all sorts of rule bending/breaking so people could be happy in their last days, never ever got scolded by my boss or senior management..
A friend wheeled a patient outside in a bed for a last smell of fresh air and his request to die under the stars.
Got a local bartender to make a margarita to go once, telling him the recipient wouldnt make it out of the hospital to enjoy another one. He didnt charge for it either.
Damn, I miss those days. Friggin dusty in my place.
And Tucker, couldnt agree more on the snowflakes who have to have their animals everywhere. I live in Denver where the whako’s are all about this crap.

Before I go into my own rant, I'll just say that I myself has son with Aspergers. He has lots of animals, none of them goes to school or into the grocery store with him.
Emotional support animals are to service animals are like Chinese made health supplements are to tried and tested medicine. There are zero regulation or requirements governing them since they have no legitimate function, so the industry can basically do whatever the fuck they want with no repercussions. They skirt the law, making sure they stay in the gray area with their claims, and have no responsibility for the animal after they dupe the buyer into their con job.
There seems to me to be a few things feeding this latest phenomenon. First, animals being considered "fur babies" that people take to level stupid. It's one thing to have a dog that is like a member of the family, it's another to try to put it on human levels. It's an animal and while they're intelligent and can do amazing things, they're still an animal. I don't care how much someone loves their animal, it doesn't get equal human rights. But they get offended by that, and their entitlement makes them try to circumvent the system.
That is where "emotional support animals" comes into play for these fools. There's an online certificate mill machine cranking out so-called "certificates" that are of less value than the bandwidth and five minute survey it takes to get one, yet they're more than happy to take in several hundred dollars from people attempting to be able to take their animals everywhere with them like it's an infant that cannot care for itself. They say how they receive relief from having it with them, enter their sixteen digits and CVV # and BAM, emotional support animal certificate and link to buy those stupid red vests that most people pass off as a legitimate service animal robed in one of those. Or, they just get the straight up service animal branded shit and get huffy to anyone and everyone who dares challenge how their pug saves their life several times a day from their own weak emotional existence. Nobody wants that kind of bullshit, so these frauds get away with this shit.
The other side of the money chain is half baked organizations supposedly training animals to be emotional support dogs and whatnot. They have zero legitimate experience in training service animals, but they don't have to in the first place since they have no requirements to be held to. It's a scam, through and through. Even the ones with good intentions aren't doing anyone any favors.
Finally, there's the folks who get these fake certificates to save them on the airfare to take their animal on vacation with them. That's where the airliens started calling bullshit on peacocks and squirrels. Give me a fucking break...

Licking someone when they're sad or laying there to be petted is not the function of a service animal. That's called a pet. Pets serve a value in our lives, but they don't need to help their owner pick out apples at the grocery store or help a kid apply the pythagorean theorem. Leave the dog at home like regular people, because you're not fucking exempt from having to cope with real life. If you can't handle real life, stay the fuck at home.

I too wonder about people that service animals. I grew up on a small farm that provided for our table. I never once thought of servicing those animals. However I have seen reports of some persons forcing their services on animals. Apparently they aren't very hungry.
I would hate to imagine what they go through. My wife has depression and she got a chihuahua to help her when she moved a few hours away for work as a teenager. She became very attached and after 12 years the dog had to be put down this year. She hasn't been the same and had struggled with it for the last 8 months. She just went to the doctor to see about changing meds yesterday. I knew it would be bad but not this rough for her.
I thought a new dog would help but she hated him because he is a high strung little fucker. The last dog was content smuggling and going for a short walk a few times a day. Needless to say, that made things worse. I don't know what to do with her at this point because she is still an emotional train wreck and can start crying at any moment. I grew attached to the little dog but I've been down this road before. I'm scared to see how bad she will be when her parents are gone.
I tried to fly the other day with my emotional support elephant. They would not let me board the plane. They said my elephant would not fit through the door. I told them their door was discriminatory 
. There was nothing I could do so I just screamed at the sky. After letting my elephant poop on their ticket counter of course.

We had a guy in a Lowe's store in TX that was a veteran and the VA prescribed him a Lab for emotional support. Lowe's hired them both. Great dog, always stayed and focused on him.
His PTSD would cause panic attacks and the dog would sense the change and instigate a need for petting or interaction that would stop the spiral of the panic attacks.
Definitely better than a pantry filled with pills.

Funny enough a few years back I sold a puppy to this big tough macho looking guy that came in town to look the litter over & wanted of course the one that was most likely to be the biggest male.
Then he proceeded to tell me after buying it, that he was going to list it as his emotional support animal so he could fly it back for free with him.
I guess if your self respect is worth saving the $300 in fees for the dog to go as normal.
Would your wife be a bit happier for example with a large dog that liked to cuddle up in bed beside her all night, or curl up at her feet on a soft mattress (or sit beside her on the couch) for several hours as she read / watched TV etc?
As to when her parents die, two different people I knew had wives that seemed normal, till a parent died and then the gates of crazy town locked open.

A few years ago I was hired by a Veterans org to train "service dogs" for "disabled" vets. They were well-meaning folks, mostly Vietnam vets, looking to do good things for today's vets. They were also completely clueless with dogs and got wrapped up in a nice juicy contract with a local hospital that was also willing to throw some money at a nice PR program helping vets. So the "non profit" was suddenly about making a decent chunk of change.
The whole thing turned into a shit show. The other trainer I was working with was amazing, and had trained some legit Service dogs for wheelchair-bound vets. Those dogs would open doors, turn on lights, get shit from the fridge, etc. The vets I ended up working with were largely females with emotional problems that just wanted a dog that was allowed to go into bars with them. All we were doing was training well-mannered pets.
All the vets started asking about certificates for their dogs because they were basically guilting and strong-arming local establishments into making accommodations for their pets-in-training. I dug as deep as I could into all the regs and came to the conclusion that we were NOT producing actual service animals under the ADA guidelines and had a big talk with the senior trainer. She had a talk with the owners of the group we were working for explaining that whereas she had trained actual service dogs for them in the past, what we were currently doing for them didn't rise to that same standard. Lo and behold I got let go that week, and she got let go as soon as they found a trainer willing to pencil-whip paperwork.
The ultimate BS in the whole "service animal" racket is that in most cases it's an act of discrimination for an establishment to ask more than one or two very vague and nonsensical questions about the purpose of a service animal.
Hell, I work drug dogs and gunpowder dogs in the public schools and one of the owners of the company got Service Dog vests for the working dogs so he can take the cuddly ones out to pick up up chicks. I can tell he gets pissed that I refuse to put a vest on the dogs while they're working. I've tried explaining that these are Working Dogs, not Service Dogs, but the distinction is lost.

We rescued a chihuahua to add to the family that is more like her last dog which has helped but it's still not good. Unfortunately, I don't think she will take it very well when that time comes with her parents. I'm just taking it one day at a time hoping she gets better and learns how to cope a little better.
