Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I might be able to make it out the 23rd just finishing up some changes at the gym.......
but still no ammo..

The good news about ammo is that Woody is now offering loaded ammo matched to each rifle.
I think Ill be his first customer for that. Just dont know when he will start this.
Plus I have a shit load of brass for him just sitting here....

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I run a Dillon 550 and whether you want to use specialized dies, hand weigh your powder charges and create individual masterpieces or use standard dies (I use Dillon for about half my reloading and Lee, RCBS and Hornady for others) and run off hundreds of rounds in a few hours, the reloading learning curve is not as steep or long as you might think.

If you can wait months for a custom rifle, you have the patience to learn reloading and a few friends to help you along.

On Sunday, I shot 159 of the loads I produced on Saturday and really never felt as though there was anything lacking, qualitatively speaking, in the accuracy department over my charge master loads with every powder charge weighed to the 1/10th of a grain.

The powder charges thrown by the Dillon Powder measure are 3-4 times faster than the Chargemaster can do and are accurate to .1-.2 grains. Clearly, I can't say these rounds are as precisely charged given the greater variance in powder throws but the speed of generating a larger volume of almost as good loads is appealing. Especially when it is hot as balls in the garage on a September afternoon!

For shooting groups on paper, I'll go the slower route and there is no short cutting the case prep chores but the choice of how to feed powder is one more dimension to reloading that is perhaps not considered by those who haven't yet taken the plunge.

If nobody is going on Sunday, ill just stay home and make more ammo.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

gonna head over there for the first time this thursday. got a few questions...

1) will they let me set up my own steel, even if it's my first time there?

2) do guys drive their own vehicles down range to set-up targets or do they have golf carts?

3) can you set up targets stands at all distances? I'm looking to shoot groups on paper at 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, just to confirm my come-ups.

4) do they just give you one target stand to use or can I set up multiple ones in my lane?

thanks all!

AL,your rifle came together very nice and next time you let some one with a 338lm shoot your target make sure they know to shoot the skull not the stand.

I tried to call the guy about use going out to take some hogs and do some shooting but no answer and no voice mail so ill try again this week

You're welcome. Too bad you weren't there today as it was an excellent range trip!

Regarding question 4, the ideal way to set target stands would be in adjacent lanes as you progress out since, due to the flat lay of the land, sequential target stands in just one lane would be obscured by those in front of them.

On a Thursday or Friday, there are rarely the numbers of shooters there as on weekends. I say rarely only because I would be presumptuous to be more unequivocal. When I have been there on Thursdays or Fridays, there have been very few people there.

Good Luck.

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

As usual... Awesome day of steel smashing fella's!!!!

Good to meet you Over_watch and Mission_Fail. Hopefully we can all meet up again in a few weeks!

Again... AWESOME DAY today fella's!!!! WoooHooo!!! Im still pumped as I replay the skull and QQ's targets dancing around on the chains with the familar report (ping!).

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

It was indeed!

I have to admit that I now do not want to pull the barrel off that Savage 10! After having two Remingtons reworked over the last year and then acquiring that 5R, I had neglected the Savage for the last year or so.

Just to keep her from feeling neglected, I took her out last Sunday and yesterday and Keee-Rist she was fantastic with those 175 SMK loads!

That's the one I wanted to convert to .260...

What to do...?

Seeing that you have a few .308s I would convert it. SW ammo is making 260 ammo so you could get up and running really quick. Dont forget about 6.5 creedmore too! Hornady has factory ammo that is really good load. Lifes full of decisions... making the right ones without having to spend the nights on the couch is the challenge! LOL.

Im still stoked from yesterday!

Awesome time yesterday guys. So good to meet you all. Until next time....

Think I'll try to choose between the 6mm or 6.5mm/.260 cartridges that enable greater than 1200 rounds of barrel life!

No rush though as nearly all my money is going to USF or Univ. of Alabama...

Awesome!

Have you hunted that land for pigs before James? From the road, most of that country looks pretty open but the woodsy areas get pretty tangled in spots.

Just curious as to which rifle to bring as I would love to bring out the Marlin .35 Remington. I love shooting over open sights in the woods!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Most of the property is open with some narrow tree line dividing pastures, and there is a gas line on the north side along with some very pricey cattle on the north east corner. So we will most likely set up and wait around an active mud hole, thinking the 308 would work out just right
Ranges out to around 600/700 yards north-south and 200/800 east-west ,but im just guessing because i dont have a range finder

Will google it when i get home and sent a map out to you guys tonite, back to work for now

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Man I have to make some changes...

I take 675 from 301 to 64 every time I come to Manatee or when I go to Stuart for that matter! It's a beautiful drive and all that open land is magnificent!

Step 1; Become successful

Step 2; Buy land!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

now that i have looked over the map again i think the longest shot could be 1200-1300 meter(on the south fence line the across the 3 pastures to the south east corner)which is one of the spots that hogs come onto the property.Just something to think about

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

I hear ya Alan. Im more of a steel smasher myself as well.

Ill go and shoot them if someone else is willing to clean them. Im not sure the wife is going to like me hoisting up a pig or two in the back yard for skining and quartering.

So who will be hosting the pig pickin?
laugh.gif

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

Pig is the only critter my wife will accept is worth hunting! She dislikes venison and duck and was very disappointed to learn that wild turkeys don't taste as good as Butterball breastessess! Of course, she is Cuban and their love of puerco rivals that of Baseball and Anger!
laugh.gif

Hell yeah, I'd love to nail a sow in the 100 lb range! Good eatin and good for Florida!

I wonder how many we'll see in daylight though. What kind of pressure are they seeing there now James? Anyone putting rounds on them lately?

They aren't the stupidest critters on earth. I can tell because none of the ones I've seen have Obama stickers on their asses!

Re: shooting at manatee gun range, Florida

no one really hunts them on the property and the surrounding land is not hunted at all.To the ? of what we will see in the daylight is up to how wet the mud holes are.I haven't been out in a few months, but will try to get out before hand to check for active wallows&rubs.

Also this will be a hog trip, the following trip should be a shooting session.I told to keep the group small me +2 so will need to know who wants to come out in advance so charlie knows who will all be at his place.
