Any ideas on how to reduce noise on outdoor range. My house is in city limits but shooting range is just outside of city limits, but I want to be a good neighbor. None have complained and have invited several over to shoot. I currently have 4 big hay bales in semi-circle around bench.

Re: Shooting range noise reduction

Too many guns and to many other people shooting. Need something that I can build and shoot thru. Will probably plant rows of Autumn olive, it grows fast and is also good for wildlife.

Re: Shooting range noise reduction

Get a pipe that is about 3 feed wide and 4 to 5 feet long to shoot through. Line the pipe with open egg crates or the foam stuff that looks like egg crates. The noise will deaden on the valleys of the egg creates. Makes sure you replace or clean the material inside of the tube every year or more depending on how much you shoot because of unburned powder buildup. Over time it can become a real fire hazard.

Contact the NRA.

They have a large supply of range plans. I am sure there would be something in there that would suit your needs on the "noise issue". I am also sure that they would help you if you were a member and gave them a call.

Yes, tyres work well..The IRA used to use them them to build half buried "ranges" to test weapons, usually across the border in Southern Ireland.

For the best effect, take a leaf out of their book, and cover the tires in soil and turf as this reduces the noise still further.

Ideally, you want the firing point enclosed (a bit like the existing hay bales...

Re: Shooting range noise reduction

Thanks for all of the suggestions.I had read about using tire but didn't want the eyesore, however covering them up w/ dirt would solve that problem. Thanks for the suggestions and please keep them coming. Will also contact NRA as I am a member as anyone serious about the 2nd amendment should. Will keep researching and do something this spring when ground isn't frozen. Will post pics once I do something and it works.
