Yeah, it's kind of a pain, but there are a lot of Yahoo's that show up there, so they need to keep a tight leash on them,... which is good.

Re: SHWW Group

sorry ryan mill creek is not on the list.

on the bright side guys don't worry about start up costs, worry about how many guys you think would be interested and a good price point to get 1000 members. I am very serious about this, in fact so serious i am going to look at property for it this weekend. we aren't talking about a narrow shooting lane with a few positions we are talking about a 200acre+ shooting compound

steel get some!!!

Damn! Oh well,... Excellent! "200acre+ shooting compound" sounds like a hell-of-a-lot-of-fun!

Re: SHWW Group

Scott I would say if it was in the 200-300 range it would be feasable. More than that and alot of people would not be interested. They would just go to the hot spot in ellensburg and shoot for free!!!

I pay $125 a year at kenmore, they have shotgun, archery, archery walk though course, big pistol bay, two rifle ranges, 5 stand shotgun, sporting clays. Lots of things... That being said I would love a structured place to shoot longer ranges and get some serious practice.

Re: SHWW Group

TSI,

I would definetly be interested. For a compound of that magnitude I wouldn't hesitate to spend a couple hundred a year for membership dues.

You can ride quads where ever you damn well please on private property, right?

Would this be a place for matches also? or just shooting range?

Location, location, location. Please keep us posted.

Re: SHWW Group

Oh yes guys there will be camping available on site probably minimally 5 acres of campsites. you guys no me i don't do anything half ass, hopefully i can pull this off and it will be the best rifle range in the northwest. If/when i do this it will be my fulltime job and you can expect there to be all types of matches there, anything from pistol/3 gun/ long range rifle/ etc...

think of the possibilities of a privately owned range of this size. night matches, suppressed matches, you name it i will probably hold it. The idea is to build this into a range like no other in washington.

think of it like field of dreams

"IF YOU BUILD IT THEY WILL COME"

how would you guys like to see one of these at a match? (this pic is of one at rifles only/sh cup)

Re: SHWW Group

I think it's a great idea, my main question is how long the drive would be. I'd have no trouble paying 200-300 a year for an awesome range, but I really would hate to have to drive 3+ hours to reach it.

The 168 SMK's do have issues. They experience dynamic instability at the cusp of transonic flight (about 750-800 yds depending on the conditions). It's just that bullet though. Noslers, Bergers and others in 168 grn do well if they are properly stabilized.

What kind of rig do you have and whats the rate of twist?

Re: SHWW Group

Hey TSI,

I like the idea, it's something I'd be interested in joining.

I'm sure you've already thought of it, but if you had someone involved doing some training,(like that Caylen guy or someone like him) it would be icing on the cake......mmm layered cake!

Re: SHWW Group

I for sure will be inviting instructors to use the facilities to use the course and teach some classes. I also intend to have all kinds of matches and minimally a monthly long range steel match.

time it is approximately 1 hr from north bend if you are coming from the west side and 15min from ellensburg if you are coming from the east side.

I promise when i finalize the location the shww guys will be the first guys invited to come out and check it out once i have purchased the property.

needless to say i am currently having a fair amount of trouble sleeping right now.

I've always heard about that for the 168gr and the design of the bullet. I also heard the 175gr GMM does better at longer ranges.. I'm assuming the bullet design is the same so the weight really helps pushing it out farther.

Going to run 168 GMM on a match.. think most targets are under 800. Not even going to pretend to hit the one out at 1300.. though wouldn't that be something.

Re: SHWW Group

TSI, I would be all over a place like that, and willing to pay a couple hundred a year!
Ryo, I was taught that the 168gr and 175gr bullets have different profiles, and that's where the difference comes in. I can never seem to get it straight, but one has a secant ogive and the other a tangent ogive. Which ever one the 175gr is, turns out to handle the transition from supersonic to subsonic speeds much better. The 168 just isn't consistent when it makes the transition.

Hey Caylen -

Thanks for the response. I have a trued up (by HSSS) REM700 in .308 with a factory barrel with a 12" twist that I had HSSS cut down to 20". It has a Jewell trigger and is bedded into a fully adjustable McMillan A3 stock. It's an honest 0.5MOA or better rifle out to 600 (furthest I've shot it). That's been from the bench, my positoin shooting is weaker.

I suppose that depends a great deal on how you define "it"... How long is a piece of rope?

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Ryo</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Basically how good is the book at teaching long range shooting, from techniques to understanding the concepts of ballistic calculation.</div></div>

It doesn't touch on "Shooting Techniques", but gives a great, easy to understand overview of "Ballistics" i.e. the variables involved in the calculations (Form-Factor, BC, Spin-drift,...etc), the way they're measured, and how accurate solutions are calculated. Only a third of the book discusses this "theory". The rest is analysis by Brian of the most popular bullets available for long range shooting. His analysis is very thorough and utilizes the G7 form-factor (boat-tail) for his ballistic coefficient (BC) calculations rather than the standard G1 (flat-base) that's used by most manufacturers giving you a more accurate solution. It's a really good book! If you're into long range shooting and shoot anything with a boat-tail, it's worth picking up!

Re: SHWW Group

It provides G1's as well.... for those of us "flat Earthers"
laugh.gif

Ryo, I have it sitting next to me right now.... stuffed with scraps of note paper, book marks, and notes scribbled throughout..... none of which has, or will, amount to a hill of beans, in terms of improving my shooting.... but it has helped a bit when I go bullet shopping.... I've also learned a bunch of ballistics stuff, most of which, I've forgotten....
wink.gif

Honestly, the best source for "technique", in my estimation, would have to be the "online training" here on the Hide. You can actually learn everything that's offered in there, for free, with endless hours of searching the site.... but there, it's all in one place, and presented without distraction.

Re: SHWW Group

Hey guys,

I'm up in Lynden and have heard from several locals that there is some public land on South Pass Road (just outside of Everson) that you can get up to 1000 yards on. Anyone know anything about it? I've got a guy who said he can take me out there, but it'll depend on his schedule.

Also, does anyone know of any good shooting spots around the Deming/Mt Sumas area? Preferably accessible by car since I'd rather not bug my brother to take me in his truck. Just received a Dept of Natural Resources map yesterday that shows all the publically owned land in the area, so hopefully I'll be able to scout out some places and find something that works.

Hey Mike,

Yeah I heard from John and Jeff R; I really need to stretch the 338 out and if it's on South Pass Rd it's probably pretty close to where I live.

Gonna be at Custer this weekend?

Re: SHWW Group

I'm going to try and get there early saturday morning, need to zero due to some scope adjustments. How 'bout you?

If a truck is needed to get to the mystical place John and Jeff speak of, I've got one, let me know if you find out how to get there.
