Ok. Let me start by saying, I prefer 40s&w over 9mm for several reasons but that is a debate for a mile long, pointless thread that just will end up with hard feelings and butthurt.

So over the past several years with the PCC uprising, and everyone 9mm this...9mm that..., I have often read the 9mm was far more popular among the shooting community. I had even read articles and commentary believing the .40 'would soon die'. (Haha). Fast forward a year or two and now you're lucky to find a 9mm case on the range let alone 9mm ammo that you don't have to trade your left nut for.

Low and behold, .40 cal is still somewhat available at decent prices. .40 bullets are pretty available, etc. Maybe now the .40 will get the recognition it deserves.

I may need to start casting my own bullets but I will always have my favorite caliber.

I enjoy these discussions about the best caliber and encourage and enrage some at the same time.

I would not get to wound up in 9mm as it will fail again and FBI will probably lead everyone to the .357 Sig. I never understood why the FBI wanted to go back to 9mm after several dismal failures that were supposedly cured my improved ammo. Their new recruits could not handle the recoil of the 40 S&W. Why did they not further reduce the power of the 40 to match the 9 and save all that money on new guns.

40 caliber ballistics are nothing new. Look at the 38-40.

It’s not just new shooters that have a hard time. When JSOC got 40s they found that their training days had to be shortened and that they didn’t shoot them as well, especially in the smaller guns. Thats partly a function of how light Glocks are, but still a factor. In reality all handguns are mediocre, the one you can practice with more and shoot faster and more accurately is better.

The FBI actually has a strong training program, though they’ve lost their gun culture.

One of the reasons for switching calibers is that the G19M requires a new recoil spring at the same interval that a G23 requires replacement of all springs, pins and small parts.

The .40 is a great round for when you want something with more punch than the 9mm can do.
However there are less options for carry pistols in that caliber.

It's a great defense round but not the easiest for many to practice with.

Then with the .40 you can often get a drop in replacement barrel to go to .357 SIG which is an excellent but overlooked round.

It was too stout of a round and most wanted a lighter recoiling round, a bit cheaper cost and a little bit more capacity.
When most of your shooting is target practice and qualifications, the 9mm makes you look better.

The one and only .40S&W firearm I own is a Glock 24C and the only reason I own it is because when I shot IPSC (many many years ago) it got me into Major power factor with a 15rd capacity. I still own it and I have a stash of ammo (something under 1000 rds) but it almost never gets out of the safe. I don't dislike the gun but (to me) its a bit pointless. I still own it for the memories and a tendency to hang onto all guns no matter what.

Right up until the pandemic, I could buy all the 9mm I wanted, in any load I wanted. It just depends where you look. I bought 1,000 9mm rounds of my favorite milspec at a great price when I saw the sh!t headed for the fan. I don't know what effect the pandemic has had on it. I haven't looked at 40sw since I already have plenty of that for the one 40sw gun I have.

PS - I just looked and the pandemic has driven prices up. But comparing decent brass case ammo, I can still buy 9mm ammo about 10 cents/round cheaper than .40sw.

Only reason I have a G-19 is it's cheap shooting, across the board. Do I carry it, nope. The recoil is the same as my normal carry G-23 with Underwood ammo

I’m a 9mm guy but my first pistol I bought myself out of college years ago was a G23 police trade in. I will never sell it, i do however keep one of the Brownells 9mm conversion barrels around so it can shoot both. I agree with having a few calibers just in case, but buying ammo should be like dollar cost averaging buy more when it’s cheap and less when it’s like this!

The .40 isn’t going anywhere, despite it being so popular that it’s still sitting on shelves. ? It may dwindle some, but I guarantee it’ll hold on due to the cult following it has with some. A .40 will put you in the dirt just as fast as anything else will if the shooter knows what they’re doing. I just don’t see it ever being the wild success it was once thought to be several decades ago.

Ultimately, shoot what you like. Just don’t kid yourself that .045” is going to make much of a difference if you can’t hit the broad side of a barn anyway.

I own both, but my edc is a Glock 27. I just shoot it better than the 26. Don’t know why. I won’t jump into the 9 vs 40 effectiveness battle. I would not want to be shot with a .22 short. Pack what you can shoot. Lead on target is what matters.
