Well let you in the club if you build that clone
Such steep entry fees for the president of the poors clubWell let you in the club if you build that clone
I created a thread regarding a Remington 700 that I saw offered for sale. Several Hide members objected and suggested that I buy a Tikka instead. So I've created this thread so the other thread doesn't wander off topic.
I'm moving from an Armalite AR10 to a bolt action looking for tighter groups and less weight. Uses: Target shooting. Bench shooting. Intermediate range. High precision fun shooting. This will be a .308 because I have FAR too much invested in that caliber and I'm not starting over.
I'm a little gun shy on the Tikka b/c all I see online are a bunch of cherry-picked is 3-shot groups. I can't get a feel for whether the Super Varmint can hold a group for shots 5 - 10 in slow fire. Increased dispersion is my concern.
I like the CTR 10rd magazine, but the stock seems cheap. I like the Super Varmint slightly heavier barrel but don't care for the thin magazine. And there have been some reports of the SV having a rough internal receiver. So, is the Tikka a tack driver, and will it hold a group for more than 3 shots? LOL!
Tikkas are well-made and shoot. His 10-rd groups are not unique. But for some reason the barrels are slow. I wish someone could explain why….Thanks for posting 10 shot groups. Very compelling argument for the Tikka.
If I had to reason, I would say it’s because of the extremely long freebore. These barrels are only slow with factory ammo because of how far the bullet has to jump to the rifling. Lots of room to bleed off pressure. Hand loaders can load them out while adding in the powder to get the pressures up and voilá, slow no more but just as precise.Tikkas are well-made and shoot. His 10-rd groups are not unique. But for some reason the barrels are slow. I wish someone could explain why….
Well I'll be Fuhqed.24 shot group with a factory 700 5R Milspec .308… Had I not rushed the last shot (far right pull), it would have been sub-MOA..

That’s amazing. Kudos to the shooterWell I'll be Fuhqed.
24 shots into 3/4 MOA, I'm impressed. You're one of the few who I'd be happy to say have a true sub MOA rifle 95% of the time.
Such a breath of fresh air. I'm completely over the bullshit 3 & 5 shot good group proclamation.
If you haven't seen it already, here's an entire thread devoted to 10-round groups from Tikkas: https://rokslide.com/forums/threads/show-your-tikka-ten-round-groups.172391/I'm a little gun shy on the Tikka b/c all I see online are a bunch of cherry-picked is 3-shot groups. There's a 24" 6.5CM Tikka T3X CTR in a KRG Bravo for sale in the PX for $1200. If I had to buy a budget, production rifle to upgrade with a few parts it would end up just like this one. And I only own one factory centerfire action anymore these days and it's a T3.
Hey that’s my rifle you’re talking about lolWhy would the seller have the action trued by Preece Precision? Was that necessary due to the re-chamber? I thought the Tikka bolts were the 'bee's knees' and buttery smooth? Why would you go through the expense of a fluted LRI bolt and M16 extractor?
Bolt is a LRI bolt. Fluted, M16 extractor, sterk handle.
And everyone of those smiths is dogshit In my experience including proof house chambered barrels. I have first hand horror stories for each of them and a ton of 2nd hand ones. A competent machinist/ smith who measures and indicates correctly each time would see the variance and know something is wrong. But more Smith's will. Proof, Carbon Six, PVA. IDK, kinda sounds like the Keystone/ John - Zermatt Origin drama.
yeah, and Yugos were good cars, but not when compared to CaddiesTikka Super Varmint $1649 vs. new manufacture Remy Model 700 SPS Tactical Threaded $765.

Reading is fundamental, in your case you missed this sentence in my OP "This will be a .308 because I have FAR too much invested in that caliber and I'm not starting over." Period. Now, you probably take your own advice about arguing on the internet as you seem a bit too contrary here. You could have bought this and be shooting already instead of arguing with nerds on the Internet. Just do like the rest of us have and buy both to create your own opinion and experience. It'll be a lot more fun.
