ALCON: Greetings, I am happy to have surfed in here and look forward to all the intel I can glean from here. I am an OIF II Veteran and OEF VII Veteran and was carbombed in each, giving me the East Coast, West Coast Iran Combo.
My question is which scopes would any and all recommend for the SOCOM 16. Thanks in advance!

Re: socom 16 scope

As a former SOCOM owner, good luck.

The answer entirely depends upon what you wish to do with the rifle.

What will be the rifle's purpose? What is your budget?

I mostly ran red dots on my SOCOM. I did use an extended Larue (mounted backwards) for a few 1-4s and a 2.5-10 IOR, however, with rail height and mounts, I had to install a very high cheek piece.

The SOCOM is a great rifle, and if you are lucky enough to have the full-length rail version, optics are a breeze. If you have the version with rail that stops just before the action, it is a bit more challenging.

Budget and purpose? With that, we can recommend better.

Re: socom 16 scope

Definitely give us the intended use for the rifle, makes like easier. Also look at Bassett mounts, not sure how they work with all the SOCOM rails, but you can remove and install the mount with minimal zero shift. If it'll clear I'd recommend the low picatinny version with some proper height rings to just clear the rear sight/forward rail. As said earlier, mounting an optic on an M1A requires a cheek riser. For a solid unit check out the Desert Warrior kydex riser. It does require you to drill two holes in the stock but it's about the best sold riser out there that's relatively quick to adjust.

Re: socom 16 scope

I am looking for a 4x (ish?) scope. The intended use is as an anti hog gun possibly. The budget is in the 500 dollar range, although I am real bad about breaking the budget for my weapons. Thanks fellas.

Re: socom 16 scope

Jimmy. If you have nothing but forests where you're hunting the porkers the red dot will get you on target quicker, and the meat in your freezer.

Also if you're stalk hunting then take the cluster rail off to save yourself some sweat, and look for a good scope mount.

Re: socom 16 scope

My friend runs a Burris 2-7x24mm handgun scope with BDC on his. It works great and you don't need to buy some extension rails for it. The eyerelief of the Burris 2-7 is perfect throughout the whole mag range for the SOCOM.
