Spray Painting Rifles

I’ve painted probably 10+ rifles using the sponge method. Works great. My most recent one below.

New to me, but painted none the less, Sako TRG 22.

The scope is from my Mk13 build and has been dragged in and out of the drag bag lots of times during the last 12 months. The Nightforce bikini rubber scope cap also rubs the paint. Anyhow.

It might get a repaint towards the summer.

There is a product I used which is basically a 2 part epoxy rattle can. It has an activator in the bottom you puncture to release the agent. It comes in flat to gloss. I used it to clear over my rattle can web job. Super durable.

Trying to decide if this looks like amateur hour or not. The factory paint began to chip around the nose from the bipod. I decided to repaint. I know its not gonna look factory but would like to look nice. Brown, OD, black, Coyote. The black and the brown almost look the same unless you look close. Its weird. Would it look better with a solid OD stock?

Looks fine to me. Wouldn't work where I live because it's more of a semi-arid to desert landscape but in a green forested area this would work great.

Hey that looks pretty dang good. I first thought these were the before pics. Looks like something I'd see as a factory finish to me. I'm sure if I was looking at it in hand there are "flaws" but then you can sand it down for a do over if you wanted. There's nothing wrong with it!

looks great

there is no amateur/pro, what ever fits your terrain

if i spray it pure white but i hunt in the snow is that amateur?

Sponge painted both of these. I really like how the tikka turned out but not so much on the AR, planing on repainting it at some point.

The brown reminds me of the AL & GA clay you can get into down south. The green is just too green...lol

Still looks good overall. Just change that green. Maybe overspray it with another green...

What brand paint were you using??

Cool. I know plenty of guys use them for their home paint jobs. I went with the Brownells stuff since I find the colors tend to be what I want. Yes, the cap colors doesn't really match what you may expect. Once you figure out what it's really like on the weapon you can plan a pretty decent paint job.

If you need added grip buy some silicon carbide granules and epoxy them on to the bare stock. A lot of competition pistol shooters have gone away from grip tape and now directly apply granules to last longer.

Thanks for the suggestions. Silicon carbide...interesting.
Like turning the grip into a sanding block....
No, I don't have silicon carbide on any gun. I do have a piece of skateboard tape on the front strap of a 1911 style pistol. Grips well but is a little abrasive until you develop some callouses.

You might not want it everywhere on a stock.

What stock is that? I like the geometry and it looks lighter than some of the more "tactical" adjustable ones?

Factory Sako A7 stock, I think its a Bell and Carlson but haven't been able to confirm it. The gun is mostly factory, only thing I changed was the floor plate to a metal one and the bolt shroud to a metal 85 shroud. Lack of aftermarket support and low production numbers will probably kill the model at some point. Most of the parts are interchangeable with a Sako 85 which is nice. Just need to find a dbm for it. For 800 I paid I'm happy with it

this. works very well, but a little bit goes a long way.

works very well with a 1" wide strip down the bottom of a shotgun pump, I can easily work the action on my mossberg 590 a1 with an open hand it grips so well

Gave my 6.8 a Star Wars blaster look. I have literally been going around the house to see what I can paint next, maybe my g40 frame...or the whole gun

I really like this color combination. I'm assuming it's the same sponge method you used in your stock picture? Could you also share the colors you used for this? Apologies if I missed it in the thread.
