StaBall HD vs H1000

What kind of velocities are you getting? Looking at their load data for 208g, the velocities are pretty low...
I'd have to dig through my targets and see, buy I think it maxed out around 2850. And it was on the hot side. I gotta have 2900 to make me happy. I'm sitting pretty at 2905 with the N165.

I'm getting 2950 using HD pushing Berger 208's in Lapua brass and Fed 215's from a 30" barrel. But I'm just using the minimum charge of 78.3 from Hodgdon's load data.

I'm not at home so I don't have my notes in front of me... And I don't remember my COAL/CBTO off hand. But they're about .060" off the lands. They're fairly long but still fit comfortably in an AICS CIP length mag.

I could probably bump up the charge a bit more. But they shoot fine at that charge and I figured I'd go easy on the brass.

If you don't shoot very far and are only making small batches where you don't mind getting DOPE for the small batch and calling it good enough, then you can run anything.
However, if you tend to try and shoot far with larger batches, and those batches might get shot over wider temp swings where the DOPE matters, then you run with a single base extruded powder.
Don't get me wrong, StaBallHD is a good ball powder, but it is not the equal of something like a modern single base extruded powder like H1000 or N165 in terms of stability.

How hot a load are you running? Their data is only showing 2818 at max charge.

That's the kick, I am shooting for distance, but I'm usually hitting the range with150-200 rounds each trip. I can't maintain that if I can't get the powder in bulk.

Been wanting to try retumbo in my winmag also. Book velocity looks promising. Not sure of its availability compared to h1k.

8 lb jugs at Mile High for $395 right now.

Just went back and looked at my book. I absolutely maxed out at 79.5gr of staballHD in norma brass. Winchester standard large rifle primers gave me the best es/sd. Oal was 2.9" base to ogive per my hornady comparator. At that length I was jumping the 215 hybrid .055" in my chamber. Velocity was 2880ish.

Approach with caution. It was stout.

Regular primers, not Magnums?
I have some loaded at 80gr, I'll see what I get from those.

What about the N165, how much powder are you packing in on that load?
75gr of N165 in norma brass with a 215m. 215 hybrid loaded to 2.960" which is .005" jam in my chamber. Did that by mistake and it shot so I just went with it.

This was last Saturday at 600 yards. 3" shoot n see. Had one get away from me. Probably bad form on my part.

And that was the load you posted the chrono for?
Yes. That was the lowest sd it's ever given me. I shot two groups after that and they were 5 and 6 sd. As long as I get single digits I'm happy.

I've shot that load to a thousand a couple times. If I can stay on top of the wind I get about 90% hits on a 2/3 ipsc. South Texas wind is something else though. And I suck at reading wind. I only get to stretch out like that 3-4 times a year if I'm lucky.

Heh, come up to North Central Texas, I'll show you some wind! My local range is out to 1430, so I get to go regular.

Yeah, it looks like y'all are in for some really good wind the next couple of days.

There's supposed to be a 1000 yard range happening local to me in the near future but I haven't heard any more about it. I got on the list for future membership. $500 a year though.

Yeah the weather killed my plans the next few days. Gravestone (my home range) is pricey too, at $800-ish a year, but it's a great facilty.

I had never consider N165 based off VV’s reloading data. Is that a compressed load? Wonder how much less volume Lapua brass has.
