Hi there,

Need a little bit of help here ......

I recently took my Steyr SSG 69 out of its stock to spray ot and install a bi pod spigot in the front end ....

All that went according to plan however , now that i put it back into the stock and took it onto the range my accuracy has gone down hill ......

Any one have any ideas as to why this has happened or how it can be fixed/?

All the best

Did you get paint in the bedding where the action rests? Are the screws torqued to the correct level? Is the Barrel still free floated?

+1

I recall the steps you went through to determine the proper torque specs for the rifle, etc. which I recall Steyr told you 7Nm (60+ in/lbs). Be sure, with a proper torque wrench, that you have reached the correct torque. From there, once that it done, check the free-float. Paint in the barrel channel, depending on how thick you went, could also be causing you troubles as could heavy paint in the action area.

Also, if I recall correctly, you were in the process of adding a bipod. Under proper loading of the bipod, it is possible that your barrel is no longer free-floating because of addt'l stress/strain/torque/flex of the stock making contact with the barrel.

Finally, if all of the above checks out...I would back off on the action screw torque in 1Nm increments and see if your accuracy improves. While I believe Steyr's statements to you on the torque...that still seems like a LOT of torque for the Bakelite/factory stock. 4-5Nm seems like a much more "realistic" figure to me, but again...what do I know?!?

Re: Steyr Project Help

cheers for replies, i am certain there is no paint in the inlet..... i have checked plus i ensured it was well masked off. In regards to the comments about the barrel touching the stock, it is still 100% floating. I wil try it again with the torque wrench and then try bringing the tension down in increments and see if that helps....

the rifle looks amazing but you can imagine my feelings when i took it out to test fire!

Re: Steyr Project Help

torque isn't critical at all with the SSG69. I assume you are using the original stock? What paint did u use??? Certain paints will attack the stock material. The standard stock has a stud already fitted, why did you feel the need to remove this and replace?

If all else fails,..get the McMillan drop in. Works a treat.

Re: Steyr Project Help

well if you have a model 69 that nice mc millan wont fit it unless you send them your rifle to install themselves. And in repsonse to the previous comment about why i felt the need to install a spigot? It is more practical to have a parker hale style bi pod under the barrel and out of the way of the stock. The paint used was just simple krylon

Re: Steyr Project Help

yeah they ain't cheap but the stock on the SSG supposedly is prone to cracking, i'd rather buy a nice one now with all the options i want instead of paying to bed this one, and put a pic rail on it and it cracks anyways.

Re: Steyr Project Help

neely,..thats not true.

The SSG69 is a straight drop in for the McMillan stock.I have one I have just sold!

Take a look at the McMillan web pages. They where omn special offer recently.

In the UK, Jackson Rifles usually have several to hand.

I repeat: Mc Millan do make a dedicated drop in stock for the SSG69.

Re: Steyr Project Help

Right - I am still having this problem , When i set the action into the stock i am getting a slight rocking movement , forwards and back which 'I' think is causing the loss in accuracy when i tighten it up.

I'm sure someone will have more of an idea than me but It is extremely frustrating - The rifle used to shoot 1/2 moa and now i am lucky to get it below 1.5 moa at 110yards!

HELP!

Re: Steyr Project Help

if things aren't flush in the stock then it sounds like your "spigot" install or possibly the paint has messed the stock up?

Discard the stock,...phone Jackson Rifles and get the correct drop in McMillan.

Simple.
