Several years ago I had hired a 'handyman' and crew to help at my house. First task was pulling string line and setting temp elec fence posts on 30' centers between wood assemblies. I explained what I wanted and gave them everything they would need, including a 25' tape. After 10 min or so the leader walks down to where I'm at and asked if I had a longer tape or if they could put the posts on 25' centers. I guess I'm a dumbass for handing them a 25' tape and thinking they could figure out how to space the posts 30'. I had extra posts and let them space them at 25'. Figured that was the easiest route to take.
And regarding the tape measure video, they didn't even show (or explain) why the 'hook slot' is loose on the tape. But I have to say, reading that article all the way down to the bottom, is pathetic. Summarized as:

Wife wanted to participate in a community wide garage sale. She has a ton of decorating and household stuff to sell, which was setup in the garage on tables. So I decide this is a good time for me to get rid of surplus building supplies (plumbing & electrical), power tools, camping equipment and sundry man stuff. Everything I had for sale was nicely arranged on 16ft. trailer just outside the garage.
After 3 days and more than 100 visitors, only 3 people looked at what was on the trailer as they walked by on their way to our garage. The men just followed their wife/girlfriend into to garage.
Times have changed!

You want to see/hear something funny, take a framing square an ask 100 people to tell you how it can be used, works, or show you how to lay out rafter cuts or stair stringers. I did that once on a cookie home cutter job site, out of every one I ask only one guy knew how to use it. The electrical an plumbing depts of box stores are a hoot as well. Back in my day by 18 yo everyone I knew could built what you wanted from wood, as well as wire or plum a house. It's sad, as we all pay for stupid one way or the other!
this is what happens when you pull "shop class" out of schools and replace it with "gender studies"
yeah sure, spending a week learning about "queef empowerment" is great and all....... but ide rather my kids know how to change a tire or hang a picture......
whats worse is this attitude translates over to professional life as well........when i was working for Raytheon, i was working with EEs to test some circuits we were developing.........one day one of our testing probes broke a solder joint......i simply told him to resolder it.......well the Electrical Engineer didnt know how to solder.....and wanted to send it to the repair lab to have them fix it (easily a week long process)..........
i busted out the soldering iron and had it repaired in 5 minutes.
same shit happend with my mechanical engineering team......we had a non-structural Weld break........this caused a great stir as none of the other MEs knew how to weld........and they were bitching about how long it would take to get someone to fix it........i walked over to the welder, and welded it back together.....
like fuck, i learned how to do this shit in Highschool.......

Yep, shop for boys as well as home economics for girls should be reinstated. The bulk of my skill sets come from kin an need, early on. All Shop classes, enforced the need for strong math, design an logic skills.
In 2011 weather issues/damage in Bama reinforced the need for basic skill sets which most around here have. In the bigger citys, they were begging for those with those skills to save their asses.
Shop/industrial arts is long gone in most schools. I've taken it upon my self to teach my kids these skills (I'm not in the trades), because I feel we're raising a nation of dummies. For years now, I've "supervised" their 4H projects. I tell them that I will "show" them how, but they have to do the work. It makes a simple project that should take a few hours sometimes last days. I have to take my patience pill, but I figure that's how the learn.
We definitely need a return to those life skill training in the schools. In 7th grade when I lived in Indiana, mid 80's, all students were required to take both shop and home-ec. I believe girls need to know how to run a band saw and drill press as much as a boy needs to know how to cook or sew.
Probably a wise decision. Weren't you telling us about cutting some fingers off. :-D
Haha, you and me both. I left the wood working tools behind in the divorce and have yet to have a need to replace them, I roam the globe too much to bother settling back down with a place of my own. Damn sure not throwing a shirt or pants out because I pop a button or seam, and I enjoy eating too much to bother with the shit they pass off as food at most restaurants these days so I can run a needle and a stove pretty damn well.

They offer a culinary class in high school now. It's theory based with no actual cooking or anything like that. No ovens, no flames, no hot pans or boiling water.
They do teach them how to microwave the shit out of packaged food though...

I remember machine shop class. The first project was to take an odd shaped lump of metal and make a perfect 1" square out of it. You got a caliper, a file and some emery cloth.
It was worth 50% of your grade for the opening nine weeks.
Our auto shop teacher raced and built custom cars. He was into teaching "the right stuff".

My shop class consisted of gluing pieces of pre-cut wood together, paper cutouts, and drawing shit.
I had to learn how to solder, run CNC machines, cut metal and wood, run wire and do other electrical shit, and code all on my own time =/
I'd always heard hand filing a 1" cube was something you should do if you want to be a badass machinist one day.

From what I've read that was (and hopefully still is) something apprentices at Holland & Holland, Purdey, and other best gunmakers in England need to learn how to do.
12th Grade Northern Indiana Shop classes of the early 1960's
To pass Auto shop, you had to correctly rebuild (an they were tested) a Carburetor, fuel pump, distributor, starter, alternator, voltage regulator an water pump. (new bushing that you needed for any of the parts, you had to turn from correct solid stock) Plus correctly set up a rear differential pre-load an pattern.
Machine shop, make a part in the lathe, mil (or both) to drawing spec. Plus fit two plates in a Z pattern with nothing but a hacksaw an file to hold water. (Learning to cut a safe edge on a file was interesting)
Electrical shop, wire a simulated house, install an set timers for motors an lights. Correctly install an adjust a automatic door opener w/pressure pad. Diagnose a refrigerator cooling issue to the component level.
Wood Shop, build a Lamp, table, chair, dresser to drawing spec, then apply the finish. Lay out an build 2 truss's to spec, an frame a load bearing opening for either a door or window your choice.
Most entry shop classes started in the 9th grade an by the time you reached the 12th there was no set down instruction at all, you came in an started work. Fathers & Grandfather were encouraged to come to any an all shop classes an even the instructors learned from them most of the time. It's a shame what our schools have become, as we are turning out nothing but one trick pony's. An in most cases not even that.

One of the things I remember about 9th grade shop class was rebuilding a complete 5hp Briggs and Stratton horizontal shaft engine.
The biggest warning I remember was to ensure enough assembly lube was used.
For fun, I skimped on the lube. I knew I would take a hit on my grade, but I wanted to see that motor lock up.
We fueled them right in the classroom and the teacher did the start up on his desk.
First pull, vrooom! About 12 seconds later, silence.
I got a D for my effort, but it was worth it

The classes were divided into woodworking and metal shop.
Also had mechanical drawing.
Not much left.
They sold the equipment for pennies on the dollar and did all but shit can the local vocation school.
You would think they were trying to force going to college...

My Indiana high school in the late 80's had a metal shop and woodworking shop. I took woodshop. I've made everything from a simple lathe lamp, chests, and end tables to a full on Grandfather clock that still runs fine to this day. Since then, I have my own shop and made tons of things including another grandfather clock for myself that I designed as well.
This generation is very sad. A buddy's kid was supposed to be helping me on a project to build a room. This kid, 15 years old, didn't know how to use a screw gun. I tried to teach him but he gave up and went to play on his cell phone.
I remember nailing pieces to wood together and making "boats" since I was 5-6 years old!
Skilled trades are soon to be a thing of the past for many.

Your right as Most Everyone in those days considered that was for girls. The boys needed to know how to design, build an repair everything. Worked out well for me, as even at 70yo I still teach Power Generation to the largest Power Supplier in the southeast. In fact teaching another class next week, an have 3 more to do before the year is out, you?

i strongly believe it should be mandatory to teach a highschool students a vocation in addition to academic education.....even if its at a basic fundamental level.
i have students ask me all the time " what advice do you have for someone looking to get into engineering?".......i always tell them "learn welding and machining".........1) not only will it make you a better engineer 2) when you cant find work as an engineer, you are still able to support yourself with meaningful work.
But if you have shop classes some students may choose a trades career and you won't be able to balloon the ranks of college enrollees with the potential of getting more teachers high paid tenure at a college.
Sure you are going to have to water down the college education in order to get these other skilled/not cut for college people to graduate but who cares because unskilled unemployed people are easy to control.
And PS - Home economics ain't just for girls. Any guy that can't prepare food to survive is dependent.
If you can cook, build, shoot and jerk off it may get a little boring but you can survive.

We never had to take home ec, as we learned how to sew, cook, an butchering, while still young. 100% root cellar eats are great as well. The days spent canning an smoking were always worth the effort, as the kin would always have past family story's to tell.
